Charity and love are used as the same word often, in Catholic teaching.
Your distinction of charity and love means what to you?

(Imagining a “we” and a “them” is too great a leap for me.)
Love means to give. I think I am giving when I offer my intellect on this site. Whether it is appreciated or not I give it out of love. I post so everyone can see.

I never meant that we cannot ‘speak up’ in disagreement…that would be ‘totalitarianism’…

I simply say, do NOT publicly bash, nor ridicule, nor accuse of ‘heresy’ someone rightfully ordained as a Catholic priest, even if you disagree and sincerely think you are right and they are wrong…especially on optional matters…and even on doctrine or dogma [speak up with respect] but know that we DO have a hierarchical system that works VERY well and that is guided by the HS!..as well as a promise that the ‘gates of Hell will not prevail against the church’!

Nor do any of the above to a theologian, who may have half his facts accurately and the other half ‘not so accurately’…that even happened to our Doctors of the Church!

I already posted that I personally disagree with his opinions because I pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet DAILY in front of the Blessed Sacrament in a Perpetual Adoration Chapel …for years! That is sufficient. No bashing nor accusing nor ridiculing needed… In fact, I’ll pray for him on my next visit! 😃
As I have too.

O.K. Agreed. But what about those who continue to sympathize with this and advocate the idea that it is a “step backwards”?

That I do NOT understand…Fr. McBrien does not go into an explanation of what he meant by ‘step backwards’…I wished he had.

It is clearly not! Promoting this idea, in my opinon, hurts the Church.

Those who adore will not listen anyways! 😉

Shouldnt we help them to understand?
Sure, by praying for them…or calmly and respectfully explaining it.

Should’nt we do this as an act of charity.
Of course! But charity is done charitably…which for Catholics means ‘lovingly’ since charity means love.

Yet you have mentioned a “we” and "they and that’s a muddled issue.
A post can be addressed as an individual without a speech to a captive audience.
Speeches can sound quite patronizing and/or punitive.
That’s surely not your intent.

What could be more polarizing than a “we” and “they” approach on the foums?
IMO, not much.

Can you absolve me of my sins at the moment of death? Can you consecrate the Host so that I may ADORE it? Fr. McBrien can…even if that is not his intent.
The requirement for sacraments is form, matter, intent (and possibly minister, but I would lump that in with form). So, if someone does not intend to consecrate, then no consecration happens.

I dont know, maybe my tone comes off aggressive? Not sure, but I dont dislike Fr. McBrien, I just want to undo what he has done as far as the Eucharistic adoration for the love of my Church. It is not being uncharitable to disagree openly with a priest. How have I done wrong otherwise? Please tell me because I dont want to be sinful… Honestly…

Maybe you should read again Post # 135.
You are attempting to create a “we/they” on CA.
Much easier said than done - and simply a scattershot approach.
IMO. Is that aggressive, shocking, disturbing?
It could be to some posters.

In that article, Fr. McBrien clearly explains his belief in the Liturgy of the Mass and in the Real Presence in the Eucharist…just not in adoring it…as the Orthodox, for example…only Catholics do this…and not all Catholics at that…

So, again, in accordance to the 8th commandment to NOT Bear FALSE witness to another… He DOES believe in the Eucharist’s Real Presence and his consecration is VALID…

“All the evils of the world are due to lukewarm Catholics.” Pope St. Pius X

I will never be lukewarm - and I don’t see why it’s such a sin to be outspoken about the Truth of the Catholic Church all of a sudden.

If someone is doing something - anything - to lead souls away from Truth, then we need to scream that from the rooftops and not be ashamed about it!! I don’t care if it is a priest - Luther was a priest for goodness sake, and look what he did to the Church!!

Thank you. I was almost beginning to think I was doing something wrong by sticking up for the Truth of our Faith. :hug1:

I think you’re fine. You are stating your opinion, but to participate on this forum, one can’t have a ‘thin skin’ 😃 because we all feel so strongly about whatever we feel about…

I don’t know what your particular argument is about…mine is about standing behind priests and theologians…who are trying their best…even if that is not enough for some…

And to keep ONE church for ALL, rather than bits and pieces and schisms…

The church has survived because it keeps to what Jesus thought was essential and passed to his Apostles…then the Magisterium and Doctors and saints have developed it more, guided by the HS, but with patience and tolerance…slowly…in love and peace…and when it wasn’t so loving and peaceful, everyone suffered the consequences…so it’s best to learn from this!

Devotions are great but optional…always have been…and no one should be deemed heretic over them…because bearing false witness is a commandment [8th] and breaking it is worse that not practicing the devotion to begin with!

I have to believe that your intent is exactly as you defined it:
You act to protect Church Teaching, as do I.

Nonetheless, when you claim to be part of a “we”
then you speak of a “they,” what you’ve stated
has defeated your own purpose. Can you see that?
Life is not as easily defined as you seem to think it is.

Address one other poster and you might easily make your point!

as long as it is about the Truth of the Catholic church…just kidding!😃

What did he do to the Church? Nothing! He got out…his problem…the church continues strong! 👍

What is IMO?
Is a “we/they” wrong on CA?
IMO means in my opinion.
When one speaks as an undefined we,
one can be less than convincing.
Naming names, or addressing one another is far preferable -
because it’s more faithful to the truth. It’s that simple.

Generalizing to a ‘we/they’ is misleading, therefore less accurate.

Or we (I and any poster who agrees with me, particularly if such posters have already posted) may address you (pl, you and any poster who agrees with you). This is a public forum, and even if you address things to a single poster, they are part of a conversation involving many people.

If you wish to address someone privately then there is a private message system.

Yes, that is one way to address another.

However, referencing oneself a part of an undefined “we” is to use
the language in a rhetorical way, creating a virtual perception of “we” power.
I thought this fact was common knowledge. It’s been addressed on CA a number of times.

Maybe I’m missing something here. But I get the impression that every poster here disagrees with Fr. McBrien’s opinion on Eucharsitic Adoration. If we all agree that we disagree with Fr. McBrien’s opinion, why is it taking 160 posts to say that?

It’s been said. What else is there to say? It almost feels as if we just enjoy discussing the issue over and over again to arrive at the same place. We disagree with him. We have a right to disagree with him. He has the right to disagree with us. Neither of us are commiting a sin. So what else is there to discuss?

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂
