I think a lot of people take that as a reference to Trump’s skin tone.
Of course they do, because it is. But again, do you really not see the difference between mocking an African-American because of his skin color and giving a nickname to a guy who’s been hitting the spray-on tan a little too hard? Do you not think there is a difference? Do you really think they’re the same thing?

If you don’t see why mocking an African-American because of the color of his skin is different than giving a nickname to a guy who spends way too much time in tanning beds, or using spray-on tanner, or whatever he does, then there’s no way I can explain it to you
Not ipso facto
So a nickname for Obama that referenced his hair or skin would be hateful or not?
@dvdjs says ‘no’. @inisfallen says ‘yes’.

Yes, Giving an African-American a nickname based on skin color is hateful.
But giving a white guy a nickname based on his skin color is not hateful? What do you think @dvdjs?

Isn’t that the definition of a double standard?

This is my last word on the subject, because this is just stupid, and I’m not playing gotcha games.

Giving a guy a nickname based on his fake tan is not hateful. It’s mockery, sure, but that’s all. It’s mockery of something he does. It’s not really mockery of his skin color (because, really, orange is not his skin color, it’s what comes out of the bottle). After all, calling Trump “Cheetoh” (which, by the way, I’ve never done) is making fun of his use of fake tan products, not his race.

Giving a black man a derisive nickname based on skin color is plain old racism.

Honestly? Yes, I do take it as a racist statement to use the left’s lingo. I find those kind of remarks about Obama offensive too; I was horrified at the monkey caricatures and stuff, really awful. But I think perhaps naively that most people are not racist; this sort of thing is just the fringe who are active on social media in particular. I don’t know anybody who talks like this ever. Trump has Scots Irish ancestry I believe; I have heard that pasty white thing said about Scots Irish. Reddish hair, white skin. I take it as ‘hate’ ‘prejudice’.

For what it’s worth I think Boris Johnson would be a better prime minister but found it rather insulting to Theresa May to have it mentioned before a crowd.

I have pointed out to you that the nickname “Cheetoh” is not actually based on Trump’s skin color. Apparently you think that’s irrelevant, because you’d rather create this utterly false equivalence.

But OK, fine. Score for you! I’m sure all the Trump fanboys are clapping like trained seals, think you’ve really hoisted a liberal by his own petard.

Enjoy.

Yes, I agree. But did you see Trump dialed that back today - Theresa is a ‘terrific woman.’ I like Boris a lot but I have to ask myself why he didn’t help up to now. Why they are in such a mess with Brexit. Why could he not provide leadership up to this point? Still May’s fiasco does make you wonder if a different type of person - frankly more bullish - would handle the Brexit thing more decisively and effectively to the benefit of the UK, Europe and the US. I think she might fall if they have a no confidence vote. What Trump does and says matters in the UK on this issue I mean. I think Britain needs stronger leadership right now. She is Remain through and through.

I think that you might not know the meaning of ipso facto
Hmmmmm… I guess I don’t. It looked like to me that you were contradicting inisfallen who clearly thinks nickname about Obama’s skin tone would be hateful.

Why don’t you explain yourself in terms I can understand? Is inisfallen right or wrong?

Well that’s funny because others assumed it was because of his ‘hair and skin tone’.
Seriously–do people really call Pres. Trump cheeto? I assume it’s because of his hair and skin tone?

JonNC:
His policies? On balance, pretty good.
As long as you are fine with crony capitalism and leaving a debt to our grandchildren. Other than that his policies are fine.
Foreign policy- good
Judge appointments - good
Deregulation-good
Trade -suspect
Taxes - good
Spending -sorry

If he were naturally orange, then it would be cruel to make fun of him. It would be a sign of illness like liver failure.

He chooses to simulate a suntan with an orange spray tan with the white around his eyes and he also chooses to dye his hair a lighter orange color and style his hair in a poofy combover.

He also chooses to wear his suits too baggy and he wears his ties so long.

Glamour magazine would have put him in the back page under “don’t”.

Funny story:

When I was in high school, decades ago, my school put on a musical every year. We’d invite the girls from the area high schools to play the female roles.

One year we did South Pacific. I had a small role. Not that I can sing, or dance, or act, or anything, but it was a good way to meet girls. 😁 The director wanted us all to look like sailors who’d been in the Pacific for a long time, so he made us all take these tanning pills, which probably don’t exist anymore. I think they were made from some kind of carrot extract.

Anyway, we all turned orange. It took forever to go away.

So I sympathize with President Trump. It does look like he’s been stepping back from the fake tan a bit lately, but it probably takes a while to go away completely.
