The Basilica of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Today

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

During World War 2. Specifically, right after D-Day. The allies pounded the daylights out of Lisieux to loosen the Nazi occupation of Normandy, and three-quarters of the buildings in Lisieux were destroyed. Miraculously, the Basilica, the Carmel, Les Buissonnets (Therese home) were left mostly unscathed!

Though not photos, two very short films that show the tremendous carnage of Lisieux. The first is in French. Look very closely, and you will see her basilica in both films!

The bomb damaged town of Lisieux, France during World War II.

British soldiers fight the Nazis in Lisieux and General Charles De Gaulle visits Chartres en-route to Paris liberation

These symbolic “teepees” are found at the rest stops along I-90 in South Dakota. If you stand in the middle of one and look up, the picture on the right is what you see.

The view of a lamp by our living room window, as reflected in my eye. (The light patch in the lower right is the sun shining on our living room carpet.)

The North Shore of Lake Superior is the area of Minnesota that meets that great lake. Most of the tourist activity is located on a thin ribbon of road called Highway 61 which runs from Duluth all the way to the Canadian border. Since it is about the only way to get anywhere on the North Shore it is generally quite busy. But at 5:45 in the morning it is practically deserted. Here we see one lone truck coming up 61.

The photo @LeafByNiggle reminds me of roads in lots of American films .

But the area is flat . The road is long and straight appearing to go nowhere . There is very little traffic. The only occasional sign of life is the odd petrol filling station .

Are there many roads really like that ?

Ten minutes after sunrise, on my way back from Adoration, May 3rd of this year, as seen on a bike path in Minneapolis.

Distant storm clouds over Lake Superior. (The tilted frame was so I could get more of the horizon in the picture. I didn’t have a wide-angle lens.)
