Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary comes from the victory of the Polish king, John Sobieski, over the Turks in the Battle of Vienna in 1683, who had asked for Our Lady’s protection, thereby saving Europe from disaster. They invented croissants (Turkish half-moon) to celebrate.

I’ve lived in Los Angeles all my life, in a residential suburb on the westside, near acres of undeveloped land once owned by the Hughes Aircraft Corp. Growing up, I spent long days hiking and playing in these fields and canyons with my friends, hunting for snakes (which we rarely saw) and lizards (which were plentiful).

Here’s my home town of Missoula, Montana before I lived there. That’s Hellgate Canyon in the background. My high school had the same same name. Mt. Jumbo is on the left. that’s where I played and watched birds as a young tad.
