Our Market Hall with the clock , and the Town Hall with the balcony . Quite nice buildings , and made even nicer when the Queen and Prince Philip paid the town a visit .

A younger Queen Elizabeth had first visited Accrington in 1955 (photo below) . The man on the right of the photograph was Councillor Michael Walsh , the town’s Mayor , and he was the first Catholic to be Mayor of Accrington .You can just make out the mayoral chain of office round his shoulder. We got the afternoon off school so that we could go and see the Queen , but I went home to play out with my pals , much to the chagrin of my mother.
