In July 1962 I was on holiday in Cornwall .

We visited Crantock , a quaint village .

Then we walked down a quiet country lane to find that it ended at this beautiful beach .

It was a day full of magic , a day I’ll never forget .

Newquay in Cornwall where I had two enjoyable holidays in the early 60s .

I know I was there on July 23rd 1962 when via the Telstar 1 satellite the first live trans-Atlantic TV broadcast was made . Being on holiday my mum and dad let me stay up in the hotel to watch it . It was quite an event .

In town are the remains of these Aspen Colliery coke ovens .

Known locally as the “fairy caves” these coke ovens converted the coal from the Aspen Colliery into coke for the steelworks as a smokeless fuel .
