There’s a lot of idealism on this thread, but the fact is that making your religious convictions known at work is generally a bad thing. It’s worse when those convictions are directed at a coworker. By all means, tell him that you’ll look later and just never get around to it. But neither your coworkers, nor your boss are going to likely be impressed with you announcing to your coworker that his sinful family makes you uncomfortable.
That all depends on the environment you work in. There are lots of working environments that are open and accepting and people don’t have to keep their religion or personal beliefs private. Other environments are more hostile. I have two homosexual women that work with me and they’re both grown woman and have long since figured out that not everyone accepts homosexuality as a perfectly harmless lifestyle. (One of them actually IS the boss.) They don’t push their views on others and no one pushes their views on them. I’m certain there is a respectful way the OP can decline to view a photo book. (if one is pushed under his nose in the first place.)

How do they add nothing to society? Surely they do what do married couples add to society? Well they make kids which gays do not… But gays are not that bad? They do not harm anyone. A heterosexual that phones in his car and does not notice a kid on that same street now that does not add anything to society.

But gays do add to society they show that if there’s a cause to fight for you can fight for it. And it surely will inspire people to keep fighting for they’re rights. Yes Martin Luther has shown this before. But still…

Also speaking of Martin Luther I wonder how we as white christians could have allowed something like slavery. We surely arent without faults and we surely did not complain when black slaves where working in our factories and gardens. Yeah…
Marriage isn’t a civil right, it’s a holy rite. That’s the distinction we believe. There is no marriage unless it’s before God. Civil unions have no bearing on one’s marital status within the Church. Up until the past century, most of Western society agreed with that. It has really only been in the last 40-50 years that sexual deviancy has been given the societal “okay”, and we do not agree with society in this regard. As members of that society, we have just as much of a right to advocate for our worldview as they do theirs. We just hope and pray that we win.

I thought about this, but I wonder if this is not a venial sin, as I am telling someone something that I know I will never do, as in lying.
I’ve changed my mind. never lie. stand up for your faith in no uncertain terms and tell him that by looking at photos, you’ll be causing scandal by appearing to approve the sham wedding. denounce gay marriage. accept martyrdom of sorts and get fired.

Ok we call it a civil marriage but then let’s name it different? Happy now? It’s a civil pact.
And I don’t think a gay couple could really care about the church if you see how the chuch sees them.

Hah I don’t care if I win or lose. But I am going to make one more topic and get me some whiskey get myself pissed and go to bed. Yes sorry I’m half drunk.

And… it’s a civil action that we believe to be harmful to society. Hence, we do not want it condoned on a civil level.

How is it harmful?
  • It promotes a lifestyle that produces no offspring for the continuance of society.
  • It provides legal benefits to individuals who do not give to the continuance of society.
  • It gives a moral ambiguity to the youth of society that there is not a “right” way to live.
  • It opens the door to other deviant lifestyles, leading to the further degradation of society. Originally, it was the gay-rights movement. Now, it encompasses Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders.
  • Its proponents seek to alienate the religious as bigots and hatemongers, not just through social stigma, but through legal actions, as well.

Civil and religion should be seperate, if you don’t believe that go look at Egypt right now. There Morsi was all pro-moslim but the others got pissed. Never a good thing.

Celibacy promotes a lifestyle that produces no offspring also. But strangely enough argument 1 2 3 4 5 has not much to do with religion well maybe statement 3 might have. 6 Does

But if they have legal rights and do not continue society, they will die and the legal rights will wither no problem. They might however adopt someone or things like that. Now I am against that because I think a kid needs a mother and father role. But that has to do with roles. Nothing with me hating gays.

Well aren’t we seen as bigots and hatemongers athiest do not see us as good. I think it’s the way the church behaves. It should be more diplomatic, but religion has lost it’s grip not due gays but due science. So maybe it’s better to forbid science.

Science made abortion possible. And all those things. Yet we see no sin in science. What I am most afraid of is the rich soon being able to manipulate dna of they’re kids. So the rich will get super kids with super intellect while the poor will remain poor. Which will turn out on terorism and stuff like that. Trust me gays are the least of our worries.

And now I am really going to sleep.

Sarcasm noted and not needed. I believe times are coming when we are going to have to stand up for what we believe and maybe this question I asked has been a good start for thinking about it. If there are so many opinions on a small thing, then what would happen with a larger issue? I know all of this has given me food for thought for the small and the large.

God be with you in this.

I’m not sarcastic. I believe now that you should face this fearlessly, regardless of the consequences. if we can’t draw a line in the sand about wedding pictures, we’re Doomed.

Celibacy is for the Kingdom of God. Offering the sacrifice of desiring a spouse and family to God so one can focus on Godly things and help lead others to God. One of the reasons priests cannot get married is because the two huge responsibilities demand all of a man. Being a father is a man’s first priority of he is married. Leading others to God through living a celibate life is priority for a priest. Man cannot give either its due if he tries to divide his time.

Just a bit of info… Every society throughout history that has allowed and promoted gay marriage and unions has soon fallen. The only constant that has denounced gay marriage and unions is still going strong. I do believe that the time is near when the lines will drawn in the sand and as Catholics we will have to make a decision. As Cardinal George so prophetically said “I will die in my bed, my successor will die in prison, his successor will die a martyr in the public square.”

Celibate people that do not marry are not advocating for specific legal rights. Hence, we have no basis on which to compare them to gays seeking marriage. Celibate people that do marry (for whatever reason that might be), are still capable of producing offspring and we reward that capability. We further reward those couples that actually then produce children by giving them more tax credits and other advantages.

The church doesn’t shun science, so I’m not sure where that comes from. Some of the world’s greatest scientific discoveries were done by men of great faith.

Also, there are a great many things in this world that we must stand up against. Some are great and some are small. We should not neglect small things solely in favor of larger issues. Many people (myself included) would argue that since the family unit is the basis for a stable and upright society, this is not a minor issue.

Edit to add: You really should stop making such enormous illogical leaps. Poverty doesn’t create terrorists, false ideologies do.

No, not by the gays speficially, but by those who would look to persecute the Church for her beliefs. Cardinal George did not mention any party by name, simply the idea that there will be a time in the near future where Catholics will need to stand up for their faith, and the consequences may be more than we would like to think.

I think it is how we draw that line in the sand that matters. I am trying to find a way that is not really rude, but not compromising either. If I can’t then I will just tell him the truth-that I like him as a person, but I do not agree with his lifestyle in the light of my faith viewing the pictures goes against my conscience.

I accept that a longing for martyrdom is a natural part of our faith, but, long odds mon ami, long odds

Fairwinds,

We may long for many things, but the only important thing is what is in God’s Will for us. If I have to really do what I previously said, I have not problem with that, it is I just would like to do the same thing, make the same point in a less harsh manner.

Depends on how it’s handled and the corporate culture. In my current workplace it would be detrimental to one’s career to tell a coworker that because of your religion you are uncomfortable enough with their family to actually have the gall to say that.

I’ve been a boss and I’m sure I will be again, and if I heard someone turn down pictures because they considered the marriage sinful and it made them uncomfortable I would not fire them. I would however keep an extra close eye on them. Are they always respectful to coworkers? Do they attend optional work social functions? Do they have a lot of conflict with other employees? Basically it would be a red flag and I would carefully evaluate them. And if cuts ever needed to be made there’s a good chance they would be first on the chopping block. The way I would handle it is pretty consistent with how most of my previous employers would have in that situation. It’s just something for the OP to really consider.

killed by the gays???
If you knew some of the gay people I know, you wouldn’t find the idea shocking. However, I imagine the cardinal is speaking of the combined effort of several groups of people along with people who are too concerned with keeping a low profile to stand up for what is right. I like to hope that those people will wake up and that things won’t get to the point.

Would be an uncomfortable dilemma. I might look, depends. I would not be fake about it by giving some sort of hurrah of approval. I find it hard to believe looking at these pictures soberly would be scandalous. I would show respect for your co-worker as the first priority. No one dies either way.

I find it interesting that this thread has 8 pages in 5 hours.
