Now that’s a beautiful picture! Why is the crucifix turned so the corpus is not visible (I’m assuming the priest says Mass face the ‘altar’ and with his back to the people given the date of the picture)? I’ve never see a crucifix turned this way before)

LatinCat:
Actually, the tridentine mass is simply a newer version of the ancient Roman rite of mass, so it can be traced to apostolic times in ROME, but not in the east.
I invite LatinCat and ByzCath (among others) to start another thread on the subject to back up LatinCat’s claim since most historians of the liturgy ranging from Theodor Klauser to Josef Jungmann disagree with the statement that the TLM was merely an updated version of the ancient liturgy.

By the way, is that CHAIRS and a FREE STANDING TABLE/ALTAR in that last picture? Those heretics on the USS Indiana.

That would make sense, because you usually only kneel when you are up front receiving communion. Then you go back to your seat (and sit) and pray.

Are you sure that this is a picture of a Catholic Mass?

The crucifix is turned around, those don’t look like Mass vestments or surplice and stole, and the minister is holding the cup.

Could it be protestant service?
It could be protestant. Besides the things you noticed, add that there is no paten, either held by a server or by the one receiving Communion. The “priest” appears to be putting something in the hand rather than on the tongue. The priest’s thumb and index finger are not pressed together like they would have been in 1945. The sailors in the chairs are sitting. In the old Mass you kneel from the Sanctus until the post communion prayer.

Just a few more things that make me think this was not a Catholic Communion service or Mass.

The photograph came from the US Navy archives, and was identified as a Catholic priest in the accompanying text, although that isn’t definite proof of what it is.

As far as the position, I think there is a certain amount of slack in the rubrics given as the mass was being said in a nontraditional location.

Its unclear from the photo as to whether the priest is handling a chalice or a ciborium, but my guess is the latter from the way he is handling it.

How soon we forget. April 1945, The USS Indiana BB58, was engaged in combat operations off the coast of Okinawa. This was one of the most vicious battles of the war. If you note in the picture the guns to the side are fully manned. During that month the Japanese launched well over 1000 kamakaze attacks on the US fleet around Okinawa. For those who have never been in a combat situation, let me enlighten you. You don’t have a lot of time for things that are considered optional or outside the scope of the mission. That means eating, sleeping, head calls, entertainment and divine services. You get them when you can or when they can be squeezed in…

Now even these days in the Military you may not have a chaplain of your faith available when Divine Services are called. It could be a pastor from any faith or even a rabbi. I would imagine that just looking at the postures involved, not all the men are Catholic, and went to the mass because it was the only service available. I would also assume that since they were under pretty much 24 hour a day attacks from the Kamikazees, the Mass was thrown together very quickly, and done in the best and most reverent way possible given the circumstances. Since the priest is wearing what appear to be black vestments ort what could pass for black vestments, they used to be used for funerals you know, this could very well have been part of a burial service . Several of the kneeling men look pretty distraught. There were approximately 5,000 sailors killed, over 4600 wounded, 36 ships sunk and 368 damaged in that particular battle. I think the men on the Indiana were probably pretty busy.

Just a theory.

The bottom picture is Holy Trinity the German Church of Boston which is my Church. It will close on June 30 of this year. It is also the home of hte Indult in Boston. Please pray that we are saved by our new Pope. We have an appeal going now and we hope Pope Benedict XVI will help save this landmark German Church ( the only one in New England) The closing of HT will mean the destruction of the Latin Mass community of Boston as well as the German community. The FSSP has asked permission to take over the pastoral needs of both communities and has been repeatedly turned down. We have no debt yet we are slated to close because of selfish men who can’t tolerate an another order on their turf. We hope that Pope Benedict XVI will find our request worthy of his condideration.
Here is Easter of this year.

Wow … these pictures are so beautiful that I’ve decided to find my local TLM church (there’s bound to be some in a city this size) and check it out! I’ll read the other threads on TLM to make sure I don’t make a fool of myself if/when I do go …

WOW! and double WOW, I do not think we have anything like this in poor ol OZ…aint you lucky…dont let any b****ds close this down
It’s certainly extremely impressive … but I do have to put in a good word for St Mary’s Cathedral here in Sydney, it is a big beautiful old sandstone building which would warm the cockles of anyone’s cockles.

The one in the pics just might have it beat by a whisker though 😉
