and the 6yo I let play in the front yard or driveway

I never let the kids play in the front yard. Much safer in the back yard where they would not be tempted to chase a ball into the street or chat up a stranger.

But 9 is plenty old to be out back by themselves.

So I’m in the UK, so the number of dangerous creatures is to all intents and purposes zero. My LO is 3 and plays in the back garden on his own. The backdoor is always open and on of us will be downstairs at all times but he’s happy and confident on his own. He’s also a bit of ninja and can touch his toes while hanging upside down on his climbing frame, and ride a bike with no stabilisers (training wheels).
