Aww, bless you - you are so good to your dear dogs!I’m glad, it sounds like he’s improving still. I adopt all my animals from the SPCA, and I agree. After having such hard lives, I like to spoil them a little. I leave their food in their bowls all day so they can eat whenever they get hungry, and I keep a constant supply of dog biscuits in the cabinet. I also like to buy pig ears every now and then. They love them. I also buy these sausage dog treats from time to time. They’re made with real beef and pork, and my dogs love them. They eat well!![]()
All the cats were either adopted from shelters or were neighbourhood strays … hmm, let me think.
Deja was the daughter of a cat living at a home my sister rented. She was the one I think I told you about - the SPCA said her brothers and sisters were ‘too wild’ to adopt, and Mum cracked and brought the last one home.
Sheba was adopted from a cat shelter.
Ginger was a neighbourhood stray - her family just left her behind when they moved.
Gypsy was another stray that roamed the area for months, trying to get into everyone’s house.
Martha was dumped in front of our house - diabetic, almost bald, and thin as a rail. It took Mum a couple of months to catch the poor old girl.
Otis was a stray - and weirdly, Mum figured out that he was half-brother to one of our cats and the grandson of one of our other cats (both are now dead, alas).
Cosmo was dumped in a sack near the SPCA; our neighbours adopted him, then ‘he got outside somehow’. As a kitten, for heaven’s sake. He took months to catch, too.
Hobbes was adopted from another shelter… he was on display at a pet store, looking like he was going to die within minutes, and just the most depressed, sad-looking cat I ever saw. Covered in scabs, green goo running out of his eyes, blood oozing from his nose, black crud in his ears… I mean, what was the shelter thinking? Who would normally adopt such a cat???
Morris was dumped at a cat shelter while my mum was visiting their adoption kiosk at PetsMart. He starved himself for a few days and then was lost in the store for a few days more before Mum snatched him and said ‘fine, we’ll foster him’ (which turned into adoption when it transpired that he was a very sick kitty)
Sabu was a 7-week-old kitten that had been dumped at our vet’s.
People can be such beasts. sigh
