The question we are asking basically is whether a Catholic politician is selling their soul to secure a job?
Make a list of all the Catholics in Congress and tell me what percentage support abortion. Tell me that supporting abortion is not “selling your soul!”
They are being asked to support positions that are in direct opposition to their religious beliefs because it is the will of the people.
The American people have consistently shown it is not their will to have abortion on demand – even after almost 35 years of propaganda and desensitization.

Roe versus Wade was not an election!
That is a position that absolutely cannot be justified by the politician in any way. Our form of government does not require you to poll your constituency and then vote according to the result.
If you are in Congress, you must poll every two years.

And I assure you, Congressmen regularly pay for polls other than elections.
We are not a direct democracy. It allows the office holder to vote in the manner they see fit. If they are thrown out of office by their constituency, that is fine. But the belief that they have to vote how the population desires is insane.
The idea that there are not many politicians who trim their sails to stay in office is not all that rational, either!😉

The elected official is supposed to be representing his/her constitute’s interests and vote accordingly. This is the theory under a democratic government. Does it happen this way in reality? Maybe, depending upon where you live. If they don’t, then the system allows them to voted out of office.
Actually, America is a Democratic Republic. This means that policy is determined by the elected and not the electors. The electors delegate to the elected the power to make decisions for them. Effectively, politicians every day make personal compromise of their own personal views if in conflict with the prevailing views of their electors to help them in the next election. This is the way the system is designed.

If the intent was to have a true democracy, the elected would vote on every policy question. If it was the intent to have a true republic, the elected would be chosen for life removing the need for any compromise of their personal views.

Then they shouldn’t be in office if they can’t represent the majority of their constiuents (sp?) desires either due to religious reasons or other things.

For instance, if the majority of his district is pro-life and he is personally pro-choice, he should vote pro-life on those type of issues. It goes the other way too.

No argument to a point, however if the politician does not sufficiently represent his/her elector’s desires, most likely he or she will be voted out.

Ideally, they don’t compromise their own personal views. It is highly unlikely that a person’s conscience is going to match 100% with their constituents on 100% of the issues. I would prefer a politician actually be honest about where they stand during an election and then vote their conscience when in office.
