self identifying themselves as Catholic, is a far cry from actually being a devout practicing Catholic. People who say homosexual relationships/marriage is A OK do not have a clue about Catholicism.
I think that there can be any number of people who are versed in Catholicism and its doctrines, but who have dropped the ball on this one. Yours is too extreme a statement in claiming that such people are wholly ignorant about the Catholic faith.

I disagree. I heard a priest on Catholic Radio say that too many Catholics are living as Agnostics. After 40 years of being told to ‘mind your own business,’ I think too many Catholics fell for the, “Hey. What’s the big deal?” concept. The media is all for same-sex marriage and that’s what is informing too many people, both Catholic and non-Catholic.

God bless,
Ed

Yes, they are mostly indifferent, as I assumed. Fewer Catholics are actively promoting or supporting same-sex unions.

If a Catholic, really knew what Catholicism was
they would in no way support any issue that The Magisterium condemns as sin, My statement was not extreme, people who do not adhere to the teachings of the Church are ignorant about Catholicism, if they were not, they would never acceptt something that is totally against those teachings.

I think the ones who have dropped the ball are the bishops themselves. We don’t have much catechesis anymore and even more confusing to the faithful are the shenanigans and ambiguous statements we see and hear such as the recent events at St. Francis Xavier in NY.

I think you’re forgetting about Dignity USA which, incidentally, originated in CA.

Is a person baptized into the Catholic faith a Catholic forever by virtue of that baptism? If so, then let’s call support for homosexuality and gay marriage by its correct name - Heresy!

The Church generally continues to count as Catholic any person who has been baptized Catholic. So, it seems such persons have a reasonable basis to identify themselves as Catholics.
There are Catholics and then there are “Catholics”.

As a California Catholic, I think I have some insight.

My parish, and the rest of the parishes in my Southern California community, are very liberal. Our church is so liberal that a religious education coordinator once boasted that it is “the most Protestant” Catholic Church there is…and she meant it as a compliment. I say “religious education” because I am not allowed to call it “Catechism.” When I made that “mistake,” I was corrected. They do not use the Catechism. Some of the materials they use come from non-Catholic sources and one of our VBS teachers wasn’t even Catholic…

My nieces attended religious education non-stop from first through twelfth grade. Both were caught receiving communion at a local Protestant church. Their justification? “I didn’t know it was a sin.” “I didn’t want to be rude.” “Isn’t it all the same thing?” When I corrected them, my sister said that I was out of touch. I’m not sure any of them have even seen a catechism but they would be the first to tell you that they are Catholic.

We recently had a priest who recited the Confiteor with very little participation from the congregation. Why? It hasn’t been included in Mass for so long that most people either forgot it or never learned it to begin with. The music minister, who usually goes straight into the Kyrie, was visibly irritated by the change because it interfered with his introduction.

Gah. I could go on and on but the point is that Catholicism has been watered down so much (in this area) that many of you wouldn’t recognize the Mass if you celebrated it. In the absence of knowledge and guidance, people are left to believe whatever they will.

If this poll were accurate then how did California pass Proposition 8 defeating gay marriage?
Good point. Califonia has a myriad of undocumented people? How many of these were polled? My understanding is these folks are very religious including numerous Catholics and have families, which is the basis of marriage.

It was closer this time around to make it a constitutional amendment after courts said a mere law was not good enough. Now that a federal court said that state constitutional amendment is unconstitutional we will see how the US Supreme Court ultimately decides as this has been taking out of the hands of the people and given to the ruling class of justices and presidents who appoint them.

The amendment passed because Blacks as a group did not buy the argument that being Gay was like being Black. Mormons kicked in a lot of money and it is mostly older people who vote. As that generation dies off if the people get a chance to vote and are not just handed a ruling by the Supreme Court it is just a matter of time before somewhere in America a direct vote by the people and not just a liberal legislature will make same sex marriage legal.

I’m not sure how Hispanics as a group voted but mostly Catholic Filipino Americans were one of the few minority groups to vote against the amendment which would have left same sex marriage legal in California

The fight nobody sees coming is because same sex marriage is legal in Vermont sooner or later someone petitioning a same sex spouse from a foreign land will sue to get that spousal visa. That fight might hit the courts before the California versus San Francisco fight over same sex marriages.

Who is he? Diocese of Los Angeles, San Fran, San Diego?
is Father John Corapi???!!!WHO

I fired that one just for effect.

Look. If I gave you a stick marked off in 36 equal divisions, told you it was a yardstick, and instructed you to measure a piece of land and tell me how big it is, but the stick was only 30 inches long in reality, you’d come up with the wrong answer [in real terms]. It is the same with asking a sample consisting of practicing, informed Catholics and “Catholics” who haven’t darkened a church door in decades. In this analogy, those surveyed correspond to the yardstick, and the attitude of Catholics in general corresponds to the land. Since the sample is flawed, the results will be also. Notice that this has absolutely nothing NO THING] to do with a particular Catholic’s standing in the eyes of the Lord, and entirely different topic altogether.

On the flip side, would a survey be fair if the pollster asked only California Catholic bishops? Why or why not?

Aaahhh - but Wikipedia doesn’t begin to tell the whole story. That he is the most outspoken, orthodox and courageous priest who adamantly defends Truth and points out the falsities in the Church. Two of my faves are how he tells the story of the U. S. bishops rejecting Humanae Vitae and another in which he speaks of the corruption in the Church.

Here’s a sampling of the real Fr. Corapi…
“In the end, forever, you and I will be in Heaven or Hell. Period.”

All things are possible with God keep the faith be vigilant. We need to keep are eyes on Him who is the way and the truth. And remember the Word is not about something but about someone and His name is Jesus Christ!!!

I have read this entire post and feel nauseas, I live in California and have seen firsthand “The “Pride” (Shame) Parade” in Hillcrest( a high density homosexual community in San Diego) (more vomit), I will weep openly if same sex marriage passes in CA, A “homosexual relationship” whichever way you slice it is un-natural and disordered, we should pray for their souls, they are in great need of our compassion.

I despair that Christians will have to find a new word for the “natural life giving union of one man and one women”, It would be interested in seeing some posts on alternative names, e.g. Natural Marriage, Sacramental Marriage, Biblical Marriage, it would be wise to be prepared, because our definitions are being high-jacked, Blessings

Last year, I wrote to my bishop [a conservative] and explained why I believe the Church should renounce its authority to perform marriages recognized by civil law and perform only sacramental marriages since the law can’t [yet] interfere with the Church’s determination over who gets what sacrament, but is getting dangerously close to telling churches they must perform same-sex “marriages”.

Amen to that. Which is kind of funny as some of my beliefs are technically within being heretical as well, though as I come into contact with more knowledge in my self "re-catechetizing, I eventually get closer to “freedom from error”, as the late Bishop Sheen would say.

At my parish, we had an after-Mass discussion (informal) that included about a dozen people all randomly ending up at a local coffee shop together…
Shouldn’t that be ‘Café Catholicism’ then?:D:rotfl::rotfl:
Sorry. That was a bad one.
…one woman tried to explain that “in the interest of preventing wars for resources and overpopulation, God would understand if one used contraception. But only if they were concerned with sustainability.” I’ve never seen a priest almost fall out of his chair. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a dozen people simultaneously almost fall out of their chairs. This woman is on the board for CCAD and RCIA. I’m fairly certain she won’t be for much longer.
Pray for her. I will.
But seriously, Cafeteria Catholicism should be addressed to a greater extent. There are a few beliefs that I have trouble completely conforming my mind around, but knowing that I call myself Catholic, I also know that I cannot speak my mind about these things because, to do so, I would not be conforming myself as a Catholic.
True.
