The poll appears to reflect the opinion of most of the Catholics that I know.
 
This is not a democracy. God’s will or teachings will not change. One of these days people will understand it.
 
Why are moral truths in our society justified by polls? Why is it that if this poll is scientific and unbiased, the Church is projected to grow to 100 million Catholics in the US within 20-30 years. Also, that the majority of those Catholics will be the young.

We have seen what compromising doctrines to liberalism has done to other Christian denominations. The media is hell bent on redefining our Church. At some point, my fellow Catholics who are at odds with Rome will find that you will be more disappointed and more disenchanted with politics, corporations, and institutions that preach freedom and rights, but are self serving,fueled by greed, and whose morality and rules change with the times and the trends of these ridiculous polls. The NY Times would have probably polled those Jews who were worshiping the golden calf: Hey, Moshe 8 out of 10 would like to keep the calf.
Glad the internet has made some of these large news organizations less relevant today.
 
These Catholics are probably the Catholics who voted for Obama or voted 3rd party because Mitt Romney wasn’t Jesus.

So according to the numbers in the poll the only people that actually believe what the Church teaches at my small parish would be the children (we have a lot), a handful of adults, and Father who isn’t from the US. Yeah…right. This poll isn’t from the same people who some how concluded that like 90% of Catholic women used ABCs is it?

This doesn’t surprise me at all since parents will keep baptizing their children in Catholic churches.

At the same time did the Pope change the teachings that Baptism in a Catholic Church makes one a member of the Catholic Church with an indelible character upon one’s soul? And that even excommunicated Catholics are considered Catholics and are to attend Mass but are not to receive the Sacraments or hold parish roles until they reconcile and return to full communion? Otherwise maybe what he meant by “leave”, is if one was not practicing faithfully enough, to not consider themselves fully faithful or practicing Catholics. Maybe he does want them to leave. But he would have to change teaching. And I’m surprised any Pope would encourage Baptized Catholics and in some cases Confirmed as well, to completely leave for another community or to stay at home.

Oh ok thanks. I hadn’t seen your post. This is something though that causes me confusion. Such varying opinions on who is a Catholic. Who should leave. Who some want out. People don’t seem to agree on something so basic.
 
The New York Times knows as much about the Catholic Church as I know about fixing automatic transmission.

There is alot of dissent and rejection of the Church;s teachings. This shouldn’t be shocking to you. Thank GOD the election of the new pope isn’t in the hands of the laity. One thing this pope will have to deal with is the tremendous amount of dissent and poor catechesis. However, it shouldn’t really shock you that it’s there.

Yes as latingirl said, it’s not shocking. What percentage have other polls shown of Catholics who dissent on birth control teaching for instance? I seem to recall seeing polls with huge percentages on that one.
