I voted for the second one. Because the Veto countries are mis using the power.

I chose "It’s an evil organization that seeks to promote a humanist agenda." It has proven it is dangerous with its population control agenda.

Also, the recent events with the oil-for-food scandal where Volcker thinks he can threaten the US government from doing their own investigation. He should of been arrested as soon as he made those statements.

…we love it when it sides with us…

…we need to pay our dues or get out…

Been on the wrong path since its inception. From what I understand, Malcom Muggeridge, who was involved in the genesis of the U.N., has written on the subject. I’d like to check it out.

Debt-ridden as we may be, we still pay something like 25% of the dues. Far exceeding that of any other country. The next after us is Britain, which might pay close to 5%.

But it’s been a while, and I don’t remember the exact numbers.

…wonder what people would think if we only paid 25% of our taxes?

Ahhh – did you not understand we pay 25% of their total revenue? That’s not 25% of what we owe, that’s 25% of their total income.

And be careful calling it “taxes.” The UN does not have the power to tax!

I think it’s mainly a way to get free parking in NY city, and go to cocktail parties with people in costumes from all over the world. A bunch of idiotic social climbers getting together, listening to Maya Angelou’s ramblings, and blowing hot air out of you know where… 😃

last report i saw we we behind over 2 years behind on what we owe… now if that has changed i stand corrected and am ok with that… if that has not changed,… we should pay what we owe and not be concerned with the integrity of others when we are deficient ourselves…

…we only give creedence to the UN when it suits our policy… that has been our history of late… when the UN gets in the way of what we want, it’s a different entity altogether… then we don’t want to acknowledge them at all… we can’t have it both ways…

The UN is a great idea. But when theory meets reality??

Thats a very unfair way to describe the Maddison Avenue crowd!!😉

The UN has always been bad. We need to get out. Won’t see me supporting them in any way. We owe them nothing.

We pay way too much. Relocate the UN building to the Israeli-Jordanian border. Do not send them security forces. Let them negotiate their own safety.

I learned growing up (I suppose this is true for most US students) that the League of Nations failed because the US didn’t join. I don’t believe that. I think the League failed because nations acted then as now in self-interest. Autocratic/oligarchic nations act in the self interest of the few in charge. The League, the UN any other organization that pretends otherwise is doomed to failure, especially since the UN is composed of virtually every nation, democratic, despotic, prosperous, poor corrupt, struggling-not-to-be-corrupt. Which is how we end up with some of the worst human rights abusers sitting on the commission for human rights. Maybe we should try a new org which has standards for governance and human rights as membership requirements. ( Of course we’d argue about what those are, but we don’t have to be farmers to recognize a pile of manure when we come across it.)
I think that’s why NATO works so well, usually. The members have common interests specific goals, and membership is controlled.

As with most polls, I couldn’t find a choice that fit my opinion of the UN. Alas, that is part of the limits of polls. The idea of a central place for nations to meet is fine. During the past decades the UN has witnessed genocides, human rights abuses, wars and a host of other major evils and have sat on their hands and done nothing. Diplomacy is an essential part of living together in this world. Is the UN the right forum? I am not so sure. It seems as though it has been so rotten for so long that reform may be impossible. We do need an alternative so we can’t shut down all of those UN buildings right now and send all of those diplomats packing. Besides what would you do with that useless waterfront Manhattan property?😃

BAHAHAHAHA! That is the best answer so far with a close second, White Dove, describing the real reason people want to work there. Get to wear a nice suit, be seen around at the best restaurants and have limo take you around. What an utterly ineffective mess this has become
