I If this trend holds until the general election, Republicans are going to be hard pressed to claim that Obama has mismanaged the economic recovery. Of course, facts and figures don’t mean much to folks who think people who believe in higher education are “snobs”.
Which “recovery”? The 2010 one? The one after the 617 Billion “Stimulus”? The one that would have caused the unemployment rate to skyrocket to 10%, if it wasn’t passed?

Unemployment is still around 8%. The number of those who fell off the unemployment rolls put it much higher. I’m sure those facts don’t mean much to you.

Sorry, the American voter won’t fall for your petty jingoism.

I’m one of those elitist snobs who believe in higher education, and I second your conclusion.

First, we should use Santorum’s comment in its context. Pres Obama’s implication that everybody should go to college.

Second, we should mention that most Republicans disagreed with Santorum’s comments.

Third, we should point out that Santorum more than likely won’t be the nominee.

That was just a gratuitous swipe by bella, and a broad-brushed one, to boot.

Your opinion duly noted.

Here is a non-governmental solution to the problem

This looks really good! We definitely need more efforts along these lines. The question of how to get such programs the support they need to thrive is a tough issue. There also has to be some mechanism for program evaluation that includes basic standards of success.

I believe the government must play a role to discourage “free riders” in society. This includes people from both ends of the economic spectrum. The very poor need incentives to work and the very rich need incentives to share the wealth.

Nobody succeeds in this nation purely on their own merit - even a creative entrepreneur like Steve Jobs could only succeed in the United States by drawing upon the intellectual capital of society. There is a reason why high tech industries gravitate to places like Boston and Silicon Valley for research and development.

Speak for yourself. I believe that money as a product of “success” is what drives most conservatives. I’ve yet to have conversations with conservatives who say, “I want to be good at my work because I want to be of service to mankind.” Pshaw! 😦
Maybe you should get down to the St. Vincent de Paul Society sometime. Lots of people volunteering there, providing service to their fellow man for no pay whatsoever.

Maybe I’ve done that and more. I’ve done thousands of dollars worth of pro bono work on behalf of those who could not afford to pay for attorney services as well.

My original remark still stands.

Patch Adams Gezundheit Clinic is overwhelmed every year with financial contributions and they have more doctors volunteer their time then they have the space to support. Trust me, there is place out there for more of this sort of thing. It just needs to be organized. I think Patch Adams’ place works because he keeps the mission pure. I fear that some greedy opportunist would try to corrupt this into a way to make money. There is a time and place to make money, and I am all for people making as much legitimate profit as they can, but providing needed services to the poor isn’t one of them.

Well, you must interact with a circle that I don’t. Most of the conservatives that I know personally are less driven by money and more by being a positive impact in society.

You know what I honestly am beginning to feel like? I feel like there is no two party system. They just claim to be, while keeping the “pony show” going. We only get to choose the lesser of two evils.

The devil made me believe he didn’t exist and now I’m wondering if Uncle Sam hasn’t fooled me into believing I actually have a say in my ‘freedom’.

With all that volunteer time and money, surely there have been people who would know how to help Dr. Adams expand his project and would do it if asked. What’s holding them back??

Must be. The conservatives I know are generally the wealthy.

I liken this awakening to the scene in The Matrix when Morpheus gives Neo the choice between the blue pill and the red pill.

My point wasn’t directed at Santorum in particular, but more generally to those of his supporters who share this view. Santorum is a well-educated man who obviously believes in education for himself. However, he was speaking to his base in a way that resonates with them - which I find deeply troubling.

If anything, Santorum was taking a gratuitous swipe at President Obama’s very sensible statement during his State of the Union address that all young people must be encouraged to get some sort of post high school education or skills-training if they are to survive in the 21st century economy.

The jobs numbers tell it all. Just look at the unemployment rates by educational attainment:

🤷 Maybe I’ll take a drive out the West by-God Virginia and ask.

The high school football coach, the archivist, the parish priest (of course), the park ranger, - all are successful and honorable professions/vocations. The capitalist who builds successful businesses, or who re-builds failed businesses so that they become more successful is also an honorable profession or vocation. We need workers, managers, investors, risk takers, teachers, CEO’s, etc. Unfortunately, the Democrats definitely exploit peoples’ envy during election times when they constantly complain about “Republican tax cuts for the rich”. That is a constant refrain - GOP tax cuts for the rich. They will say, " we are for helping out working families, but the GOP wants to help out Wallstreet." You don’t think that is an appeal to peoples envy and resentment of wealthy people?

Ishii
Of cource those who play this card don’t understand that 47% of the people do not pay Federal Income tax.
