Note it was the NRA lobbyist who said it was an assault rifle.

That either a bad straw man attack by the lobbyist, or a really stupid lobbyist.

I take it back. It does contain two features listed in the Federal Assault Weapons Ban. And why does a 10-year-one need a semi-automatic rifle with a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip? Why does anyone need one?

Just imagine, the kid has a few kittens and puppies, and they all turn rabid, with foaming mouth… if she has no rifles to defend herself, what will happen???

Couple things that stuck out to me:
How do you tell a 10-year-old little girl who got a Ruger 10/22 with a pink stock for her birthday that her rifle is an assault weapon and she has to turn it over to government or be arrested for felony possession?
Presumably, this would be on the parents, not the child.

Also:
“Her policies have elevated Florida’s gun owners to a uniquely privileged status, and made the public carrying of firearms a fact of daily life in the state,” The New Yorker wrote.
Having lived in Florida, I never saw anyone besides police officers carrying firearms. I knew people who had guns, but they didn’t walk around Publix with them.

I honestly can’t tell if this is satire or not.

Can it be used to aim at multiple targets in rapid succession ? If yes, then it qualifies to be called an assault rifle .
That is not the definition in the FL ballot initiative that is in process.
a) Assault Weapons - For purposes of this subsection, any semiautomatic rifle or shotgun capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition at once, either in a fixed or detachable magazine, or any other ammunition feeding device. This subsection does not apply to handguns.
b) Semiautomatic - For purposes of this subsection, any weapon which fires a single projectile or a number of ball shots through a rifled or smooth bore for each single function of the trigger without further manual action required.
c) Ammunition-feeding device - For purposes of this subsection, any magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device for a firearm.
There is some contention about the meaning of “capable” The rifle mentioned is not intrinsically capable of holding more than ten rounds of ammunition at once. But it could be modified to do so. Opponents like to suggest that “capable of holding” means “capable, upon modification, of holding”. Given the elasticity of “modification”, that latter sense of “capability” obtains at least in principle, for all weapons; I don’t think that that the opponents’ interpretation passes the reasonable person test.

It should also be noted that if the gun were owned before the enactment fo the initiative, possession is not outlawed.

It’s really none of our business. She might be from a military family where shooting is a family activity just like corn hole in other families. Maybe she’s interested in becoming soldier or a police officer.

Why do kids need…ice skates and tens of thousands of dollars of lessons and competitions while they are growing up?

Why do kids need to go to Disney World, or the Grand Canyon, or Europe?

Why do kids need to learn to fly a plane, or play Dungeons and Dragons every weekend, or walk the high wire, or build houses?

Why do kids need a dog or a cat or rabbits? Why do kids need a computer or a television set or books? Why do kids need to enter beauty pageants or any kind of competition. Why do kids need…

…Anything?

Every family is unique, and as long as their choices are within the law, parents have the right to give the child activities, opportunities, and experiences that they believe will best contribute to that child’s productive life and be a good match with their “natural bent.”

We convinced our daughter to try being a volunteer junior counselor at MDA camp, and due to a shortage of senior counselors (sudden illness), she agreed to take care of a boy who was totally paralyzed by his muscular dystrophy. For an entire week, she was his care-giver (other than bathroom needs), and we believe that it was this experience that turned her mind towards becoming a physical therapist.

I’m sure the parents have a good reason for encouraging their daughter to use this particular rifle, and it’s really none of our business unless there is clear evidence that the family has issues that might make the girl a danger to herself and others. (Red Flag)

Can you imagine!? They cannot shoot their rifles on their 10th birthday? What will become of this world!!?
She might become that most feared enemy of the left. A responsible, law abiding citizen with the knowledge, ability, and will to defend herself and her rights. How scary is that?

And why does a 10-year-one need a semi-automatic rifle with a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip? Why does anyone need one?
Why are you so obsessed with what other people do for fun? Who are you to decide what another parent’s kids should and shouldn’t be able to do for fun? She’s not hurting anyone and she is not engaging in anything immoral.

Why do you have a problem with a semiautomatic action? What is the problem with a pistol grip? What is the problem with detachable magazines? These are firearms design features that have existed for 100 or more years. Do you think these features are going to turn a 10yr old girl into a mass murderer? I’d like to hear your reasoning, because the evidence is that parents who demonstrate the safe and proper use of firearms to their kids produce safe and responsible adult gun owners.

Video games have ratings and some you need to be 18 to play.

But a 10 year old can have a gun?

That’s not something I will ever understand.

It is if in so doing, we open ourselves up to the risk of more semi-automatic rifles circulating in society.
Why do kids need…ice skates
Ice skates are not commonly used to kill several people at once.
Why do kids need to learn to fly a plane…
Note: Flying a plane - at least a certificated one - requires evidence of a government-monitored instruction program with a certified flight instructor. I would feel a lot better about guns if they came with similar requirements. It would also help if bullets cost as much as insulin.

A 10-year old needs to have a semi-automatic rifle with a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip to protect herself at school. There have been many shootings at school (even though @theo520 feels they are statistically safe (see Elizabeth Warren's New Plan On Guns Has A Goal: Reduce Gun Deaths By 80% - #33 by drcube). Obviously, having children armed to defend themselves against bad guys is necessary.

It’s actually like this scenario: the kid has a momma cat and a few kittens that mouse around the horse stalls. A big, nasty possum that loves to rip the chickens apart and eat the kittens hops out of the tree and hisses at her as she goes to feed the kittens.

What does the little girl do?

Shoot the darn thing with her Ruger.
It’s not like animal control is going to come out and anyway, the local rural sheriff’s deputy would expect her to protect her pets and livestock.

Florida. See it like a native.

That’s not something I will ever understand.
If she lives in a rural area in Florida, she needs access to the type of gun the NRA spokesperson mentioned. The Ruger 10/22 kills small game, is good for target practice, doesn’t have a strong recoil and is good for inexperienced shooters.

My county is rural with one medium sized city. Out in our rural areas we have nuisance coyotes, wild hogs, possums, raccoons, and feral cats and dogs. We also have bears, foxes, and poisonous rattle snakes.

Rural folks sometimes need to use their guns to protect from nuisance animals. Coyotes will pack and go after horses and cattle. The wild hogs will gore a person. Possums, raccoons, and feral animals attack poultry, kittens, and puppies and are a rabies risk.

Most rural people go out of their way to avoid disturbing the native wildlife like the bears, foxes and snakes since these critters are vital to the eco-system. But even sometimes, guns have to be used to protect from these animals.
