IQ170:
Today no militia (well-regulated or otherwise) could withstand the military of a nation state.
Last time the US fought a Civil War, a significant part of the military joined the insurgents. I suspect a future civil war over the 2nd amendment would have a similar effect. And let’s be honest, a bunch of Pashtun goatherds have done a pretty good job of withstanding the military of two superpowers, so maybe you underestimate the “militia”.
This is were genuine observers of history and culture recognise an ‘argument’ that is nothing more than a flight of fancy. The Pashtun are tribal, live by a principled community code and by that literal identity are an instant regulated militia if need be.

You speak of ‘2nd amendment’ people as if they have a literal identity. There is none though. Pro and anti gun control people are diverse and scattered in every State. Both exist in the military and in the government. They both live alongside each other in families. There is no organisation, regulation or militia about them.

Fantasy to the core.

It is a fact that American children face a substantial risk
You are right, there are incidents of children finding and playing with a gun perhaps left by the bed and causing harm/death. My comment was made about adults.

In both cases, the training required is quite simple though, a multi-day course is not essential to teach safe gun handling.

Can you imagine!? They cannot shoot their rifles on their 10th birthday? What will become of this world!!?
it was taught as part of the scouting program to help kids grow into mature adults. we can see what became of the world when we stopped a lot of the old school teaching methods.

maybe we need to bring a lot of those methods back
Can it be used to aim at multiple targets in rapid succession ? If yes, then it qualifies to be called an assault rifle .
almost any rifle in capable hands can, even a lever action if you have enough experience.
But a 10 year old can have a gun?

That’s not something I will ever understand.
i was hunting duck for food when i was a teen, store-bought isn’t always the best food
The usual defense is hunting and target practice.
except it isn’t. the 2nd says nothing about hunting
Is that some kind of an excuse? Today no militia (well-regulated or otherwise) could withstand the military of a nation state.
ask russia how they did in afghanistan, for that matter the taliban is still there
If only people would learn the civilized way of conflict resolution, the whole second amendment would become unnecessary. And to allow every individual to decide his or her wants for hunting of targets, all you do is create a mess.
when the gang-bangers and perps get on board… well, of course, we still have rogue congressmen who want to nuke gunnies…
There are no “society-independent” rights, or “natural rights”.
so, the only rights are those given by the government?

Do you have a choice? Of course you can become a hermit and live in a cave. Does not seem to be too enticing. Of course your mileage may vary.
My choice to exercise my rights.
There are no “society-independent” rights, or “natural rights”. You have the right to do something, or not to do something if the strongest bully on the block - and that would be the nation-state - allows you to do so.
May I use this quote? You just provided the primary reason for the right to keep and bear arms.

And why does a 10-year-one need a semi-automatic rifle with a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip? Why does anyone need one?
Talking about needs and wants?

You would NEED a rifle like that to take down a pack of coyotes inside your wire getting your sheep. You would WANT a rifle like that to rapidly ding some metal targets… because it’s…ummmmmm… FUN!

PS.
Has a NRA member ever committed a mass murder shooting?

That certainly hasn’t been seen in voting results.
Such changes are slow, unfortunately.
It was a near run thing and a lot of people on both sides died. Not an outcome I’d look forward to.
Of course not. And yet the gun-lovers like to predict that the next civil war will happen over guns.
Any revolver fits that description
Handguns are for up close and personal. And they also have a problem with rapid reloading.
except it isn’t. the 2nd says nothing about hunting
It is the usual “defense” for having guns. And both of them should be legitimate.
so, the only rights are those given by the government?
Well, at least you learned something. The answer is: YES. Or the currently strongest bully around the block.
May I use this quote? You just provided the primary reason for the right to keep and bear arms.
Not just use it, put it up on your wall, and read it every day. “There are no natural rights! Rights are given or taken by the currently strongest entity - namely the nation-states.” By the way, let’s contemplate the scenario, where “your side” gets into power. Your side will behave exactly the same way, except the allowed / forbidden activities will be different.

Ten years old kids are not allowed to drive cars, because they are not mature enough. Are they mature enough so they can be trusted with “semi”-automatic weapons, that can KILL?

Clyde Barrow can be blamed for Bonnie Parker, not an upbringing of learning how to shoot.

Many of people comment on selfish ideas. I never needed it, therefore it is a just law. Or make sarcastic comments that make nonsense. I will make a nonsensical sarcastic comment my self.

How many mass shootings have been committed by ten year old girls? This does nothing to solve the gun problem.

This is the mantra of the authoritarian, be they kings claiming divine right, fascists claiming the state is all, or the progressive claiming “due process is killing us.”

Which is why there needs to be a constitution that limits government power and hold primary the rights of the individual. And it is why the inherent right to speech, press and arms must be defended.

Every government is authoritarian. Every one of them rests on enforcing the laws - by force. What is so surprising about it?

The constitution and the laws limit the rights both of the government and the individuals. There needs to be a good balance between the two. Their aim is to produce a framework, where people can live as freely as it is desirable. Unfortunately the human race is generally more competitive than cooperative. Getting rid of ALL the weapons would be the ideal state of affairs, but for the time being it is not feasible. So to restrict the usage of weapons is the best we can hope for.

The freedom of speech and press are not in the same ballpark as having arms.

And they also have a problem with rapid reloading.
you ever see a speed loader? you’ve seen the movies, it is very easy to carry multiple handguns.
It is the usual “defense” for having guns. And both of them should be legitimate.
not from where i read
Well, at least you learned something. The answer is: YES. Or the currently strongest bully around the block.
so man has no rights. the strongest bully around the block is the one best armed. that is the best reason to hold on to your gun

but that leaves you at the mercy of those in power and we know power corrupts.

I guess you do not read the posts around here. I see this argument all the time.
so man has no rights. the strongest bully around the block is the one best armed.
Which is the nation-state.

On the contrary. It is the best reason to get rid of all the guns.
but that leaves you at the mercy of those in power and we know power corrupts.
Again, the solution is ballot-box, not the bullets.

I’m past a half century old. Growing up, and as a teen, none of my friends or acquaintance circle were “Scouts”, and Girl Scouts have never had shooting as a sport.

My now adult son went to one Cub Scout meeting and we said “nope”. None of his friends were Scouts.

When was this time we need to bring back when all kids were Scouts who learned how to shoot?
