My latest conclusion after watching victims’ statements today on the news:
I am not fasting or otherwise addressing this subject with prayer or penance. If there is a petition to abolish the statute of limitations; I will support it. The victims want justice. They want their day in court. The men who committed these heinous crimes should pay for them with hard jail time.

Please pray for Pope Francis and the people and living creatures of Hawaii who are being threatened with a hurricane. I’m off this thread. God bless.

I understand, but I was taking the comment as strictly as it could be interpreted and pointing out the implications. Going without food for more than a day or two should only be done under a doctor’s supervision. For three days, the body can use glycogen, fat, and Krebs cycle intermediates to sustain itself (for a sedentary person with typical metabolism). On the fourth day, all glycogen and Krebs cycle intermediates available have been exhausted, and the body cannot produce sufficient glucose from fat to meet even its greatly reduced glucose demand. At this point, the muscles begin to atrophy, as they are broken down for their protein content, which can be converted into glucose.

Again, you realize you can choose to fast from a variety of non-food things, right? Hitting the snooze button, using an electric blanket in winter, reading non-faith related materials… The options are plentiful.
Again, I realize this and also realize that most people when referring to fasting automatically think in terms of food.

And again, I am not fasting in any way over this issue. I continue to pray for the whole Church and all in it.

I’m a cradle Catholic, went to Catholic grade school and high school. Latin Mass, Baltimore Catechism, etc. But except for Lenten fasting, fasting and doing penance for others was never taught to me and so it’s not part of my spiritual practice in the Church. I see no point in it.

Even if I did, I would not do it in this situation. This is a situation where the people involved and the people in charge got themselves into this mess. I will pray for the rest of us and I will pray that the victims get some kind of justice for what happened to them and that the guilty get to do penance behind bars. Hopefully, prison food counts as fasting.
