How is it more socialistic than our housing market? Housing prices are billions of dollars more expensive because of zoning regulations, building codes, occupational licensing restrictions, etc. Then you add to it our preferential tax treatment of housing, where we exempt net imputed rent from taxation, eliminate most capital gains taxes and allow mortgage interest to be deducted, etc. And of course, the socialism in the housing market adds all costs and conveys no benefit.Explain how instituting a massive cap-and-trade carbon system with huge taxes and regulations, with even more bureaucracy is not moving our system more towards a socialistic system?
The point is, one can argue that there is a market failure when it comes to environmental issues. One can debate the nature and extent of the market failure, but nobody claims it is nonexistent. There is no market failure when it comes to the housing market.
Socialists have become more adept over the years. When it first arose, violent upheaval was their modus operandi. But this was met with strong resistance from the free world. So they modified their tactics and are employing the long game. Quietly, slowly, brick by brick, they institute more govt programs, regulations, agencies, departments. More and more authority is centralized and consolidated. But rarely with honestly saying what they are doing. They take what they can get, and then shortly thereafter fight for just a little more.
I don’t disagree, even Reagan had socialistic tendencies, since he expanded a socialistic program. Nobody who truly believes in markets would do that. And slowly but surely, the elephant is eaten, one bite at a time.
