Would somebody tell me what is wrong with Cardinal Mahony? He build a huge cathedral in LA.

For me it’s deeply personal. I had the misfortune of attending a CINO college in L.A. and wrote to him of my cruel experiences there. Just today I checked the college website to see if the professors I mentioned are still teaching there and sure enought they are. In this college ethics class a professor would out right preach Marxism and bash men everytime they had a chance. I met a sister who told me that Jesus would belong to the Green Party and another who said it was right to refer to God as a female. Not surprisingly there were students there who practiced paganism worshiping goddesses. I wrote to Cardinal Mahoney in a pages long letter about this all years ago and he has done nothing.

If God is the way I was told He (or should I say She?) is in that college, than I am an atheist.

Nothing about Los Angeles would surprise me, including a lynching by press of anyone religious. Honestly, I could care less about what all those who cry “abuse” and cover-up" at every event have to say anymore. If someone commits a crime, they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Period. Outside of a conviction, or at least an indictment of a crime, it is time for the Church to realize that there is a war of lies and innuendo being waged. The Church is being held liable for either crimes that are not substantiated, or the failure of the justice system.

Same old story. There will always be those in the media, and even in the Church that will forward this demonic campaign. Not I.

If there is evidence. Then file the paperwork. SNAP has had no problem doing this in the past. Let us let the justice system work and those proven guilty pay. If these priest were proven guilty of wrong doing, then let us see a link to where they were convicted in a court of law. I consider everything else gossip and rumor.
Well, Maciel was never convicted in a court of law, or by the Vatican, either. But Cardinal Ratzinger had him step down and retire to a life of “prayer and penance”, and Maciel was buried in his family’s crypt in Mexico, and not in the fancy tomb he had built in his order’s Church of OL of Guadalupe in Rome. Many allegations have surfaced of abuse of seminarians, Maciel’s mistresses and children.

Fr. Murphy wasn’t convicted by either the church or the city of Milwaukee, either, but his abuse of dozens of deaf boys is undoubted. He was kicked out of the Milwaukee Archdiocese and enjoined not to say Mass, not to preach, not to have contact with minors, not to act as a priest. Unfortunately, he died before* his *trial and was buried as a priest.

Both Maciel and Murphy were guilty as sin.

Even though the coverup of abuse probably reached the worst levels under the liberal Vatican II crowd, SNAP appears to have such an unjust hate-on for Pope Benedict that they wish to undermine everything he does… which apparently includes the restoration of the Catholic faith. Unless I’m misinterpreting their actions.
Maciel, the founder of the Legion of Christ (“Legionaries”) and the Regnum Christi was protected by members of the Curia and the Vatican at the highest levels, through lavish gifts, parties and outright bribes of cash. The Legion was large, well-connected and very wealthy. Cardinal Ratzinger was an exception–he was not fooled by Maciel. He had already interviewed the 8 former seminarians who were abused by Maciel in 1997 as head of the CDF, but was not able to get Maciel to step down in disgrace until May, 2006, after he became pope after the death of JPII.

The order remains large and very wealthy–I doubt that Benedict will be able to suppress it.

I don’t know Cardinal Mahoney enough to know what he should have done, or may have done, or failed to do in this situation. However, it’s worth noting that just because a college is Catholic to whatever degree doesn’t necessarily mean it is answerable to the bishop. Catholic theology professors must receive a mandatum from their local bishops confirming that their teachings are in communion with the Church. However, professors of economics, or ethics, or women’s studies can spout as they wish, free from oversight by their bishops. So the fact that these professors you cite are still there probably reflects less on the bishop, and more on the board of trustees, and the tenure rules in place.

One of the professors was in fact an ordained sister. She would often talk about God in the feminine form in a religious studies class and by her own admission is a feminist. The philosophy professor who taught ethics was another feminist who would tell the class that we have no right to judge those cultures that practice female circumcision because we encourage women in our society to have plastic surgery. To her these are morally equivalent. This same philosophy professor would tell of something called the Burning Times: theatlantic.com/past/docs/issues/2001/01/allen.htm which she claims actually happened.

To each their own. I will stand by the American principle of innocent until proven guilty and leave the witch hunting to the British and others more adept and experienced at it.

I’m incredibly happy for L.A., but, unfortunately, in my experience a good, orthodox Archbishop doesn’t mean the end of liturgical dancing. Here in St. Louis we’ve had Raymond Burke and now Robert Carlson, and we are still having to put up w/ liturgical dancing. At my parish they’ve renamed it “Ministry of danced prayer” and it was being restricted to just the processional and recessional, but they’ve gotten bold again and are back at it during the Alleluia and Gloria as well. Luckily, it’s only a few times a year. My guess is that the Archbishop has “bigger fish to fry” and the liturgical abuses get placed on the back burner to be dealt with at a later time?

In Christ,

Ellen
Wow, I feel for you about the liturgical dancing during the Alleluia and the Gloria.

You have to remember Burke had his hands full with St. Stan’s, WomenPriest ordinations, Catholic Charities, and Cardinal Glennon fundraising scandals. He was archbshop for only four years before being transferred to Rome. During that time, he increased the endowment for the Seminary, and enrollment more than doubled. He also instituted Christ the King Sovereign Priest at St. Francis de Sales, making it an oratory for Tridentine mass only parish. He also established “personal” parishes for Polish, Hispanics, and Viet Namese peoples and provided native speaking priests for them. All seminarians are now required to learn EF masses now.

Carlson has only been achbshop since 4/09. He’s also had his hands full.

We were without an archbshp for over a year, before Carlson,

The first thing Carlson had to deal with is a priest who was trapped in an FBI sting of underage prostitution. Carlson had just audited the computers of the parish where this priest was pastor. It came to light that the priest had a private laptop which he hid from the archbshp. It was full of child pornography. To which he pleaded guilty. Terrible Terrible scandal.

Satan has been very alive in our archdiocese since 2004. He’s working overtime.

LA can expect the same persecution. Satan is on full attack against our CC.

Precisely! Some people seem to be trying to make mountains out of molehills.
I guess a reverent Mass does not mean anything to you. Would have played polk music at the foot of the Cross when our Lord was killed?

I’ve been to the cathedral in Los Angeles many times – several times a week and several times per month on Sundays. It’s one of the most reverent Masses I’ve been to. To the person who obviously hasn’t been there very much, the incensorium is on a chain most of the time. The music tends to be older hymns. There’s no dancing at the regular daily Masses or at the regular Sunday Masses. The two priests who are assigned to the cathedral are very good with their homilies. I’ve never heard any heresy preached there, and you’ll just have to take my word (until I post more, if I do) that I would recognize heresy if I heard it. The only real complaint I have about Mass at the cathedral is that the ushers start bringing people up for Communion from the back of the church while the “Lamb of God” is being sung and while the priest elevates the Host at the “This is the Lamb of God.” I wish they would wait until the priest takes Communion to do this, because inevitably, some newbies up front decide to climb all over each other to be first in line for Communion, not understanding that they’ll form another line from the front for each side. But maybe they do it because otherwise it would be a free for all – I’ve been in very large churches in Europe, and people do tend to practically run up and jostle each other.

I am personally very pleased with the naming of Archbishop Gomez, and I hope that he does fix the REC and many of the liturgical abuses that occur in other parishes.

Jesus does not get killed at mass. I can see now why you are so upset about polka, if you thought Jesus was being killed at mass.

Yes, you are right. “In the Mass there is no real shedding of blood nor real death, because Christ can die no more.” “The Mass is the unbloody sacrifice of the body and blood of Christ.”

When we are at Mass, is not that like we are at the foot of the Cross?

This is correct. I have heard several kinds of music in Masses from 16th and 17th century Italian, chants (Gregorian and otherwise); hymns from a large variety of composers as in the hymnals, polka, and jazz. I have heard brass choirs, choirs, violins, trumpets, organs, pianos and guitars. This is no big deal. Music is a universal language and there is no harm in using styles that appeal to the people in the pews. (Note I say styles as there are various pieces of music that should not be played in any church setting.)
There is no liturgical tradition of jazz, polk, guitars, Mariachi, and congo drums at the Holy Mass. For over 1960 some years there was none of that music at Holy Mas. Please, show me otherwise.

I don’t agree with you. That kind of unreverent music at Holy Mass has done much harm. One just has to look at what has happened to the Mass and our Holy Church since that music was forced on us.

“The Sacrifice of the Altar, where we vividly recall to mind His sufferings, where Calvary is represented before us, where “we show the death of the Lord until He come.” and where we draw abundantly to our souls the fruits of His Passion by drinking of the same blood that was shed on the cross?”

The Faith of the Fathers, by James Cardinal Gibbons. P.258

But, does it appeal to God?
I expect this thread will get closed or pruned soon for going way off topic, but since you asked…

I don’t believe God is pleased or displeased by any particular style of music. I think the words are important since they are, in effect, prayer. I also think the level of reverence is important. However, reverence is not the only legitimate emotion at Mass. At times in the Mass, the more correct emotion is praise, thanksgiving, contrition, etc. Style does not equal reverence.
Would you have played jazz, polk, guitars, Mariachi, and congo drums at the Last Supper?
But neither would anyone have had Palestrina or Gregorian Chant at the Last Supper! 😃 Music is very cultural. In the vernacular Mass, I don’t find it inappropriate to have vernacular style music.

(full disclosure: I say this as a Latin Mass Lover though without a Mass to attend :(. I am also the mother of teenagers who would rather have their fingernails pulled out than to go to a teen Mass.)

Sometimes a little knowledge can be dangerous. That doesn’t say that Christ is killed at mass. Christ died once for our sins.

If we were at the foot of the cross, we wouldn’t celebrate, we would mourn. Mass is a celebration.
