*Regardless if it could be cured or not…raping/molesting kids, and adults for that matter is a crime. These were crimes. This wasn’t a character flaw issue, these were crimes. Crimes against children, no less. Not all minors, but many. Even if they were not minors, I doubt the teens involved felt they could go walk down to the police station and being taken seriously with these accusations. What is different from back then to now, is the awareness of pedophilia and sexual deviancy, and that we don’t have 24 hour news to catch everyone in the act of doing something wrong, like we do today. The victims didn’t go to the police because they were scared–maybe they were threatened. Either way, we don’t know the full truth, we only know what’s been presented…I’d like to know what happened in a Church that I have belonged to all my life, don’t you? I’m not quick to say just because I’m a practicing Catholic that this one and that one had nothing to do with it, because I don’t know. I’d like to believe our Pope wasn’t involved in anything bad…but, I’d like to see a thorough investigation take place to what happened back then…because barring that, we just don’t know. *

So was the transferring of priests to other parishes supposed to be the ‘cure?’ That excuse is lame. Very lame. If they thought these men could be cured, they could have gotten them treatment, and they should have taken long leaves of absence…in hopes of being cured. Not transferring them to other parishes…how is that going to cure anyone of anything? Do you cure an alcoholic by transferring them from one bar to another? Not saying that people didn’t think it couldn’t be cured, but transferring priests to be around other kids, isn’t the answer…they wanted the problem to disappear…and it didn’t. It just got a lot worse. Humans make mistakes, some huge ones. Some, ones that cost people their very lives…and sadly, this is where we’re at. The transferring of priests, if the men are still alive to look back at what they did, hopefully, they can now see, the grave err of their judgement. And we can’t judge them, but tossing around reasons why the priests were transferred, there will never be a good enough reason. They were more than likely fearful of causing a panic in the Church. And here we are today, the very things they were fearful of happening…are right front and center. 😦
There is going to be a A state inquiry into institutional and clerical child abuse in Northern Ireland.

Well said … I couldn’t agree more.

What is the accusation? That Pope Benedict was implicit in the cover up of the Wisconsin Priest. The accusation is false!

As a Protestant you tell me, how did the Protestant Church deal with sex abuses cases in the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s? Where all the cases reported to the police, and the Priests prosecuted if found guilty, or where there coverups as well? Sending the Priests away to be cured?

The same must of been done in all the Churches, regardless of denomination, in all the religions!

The view back then was that pedophilia was something that could be cured! That was the general view! I’m not defending the horrible things that when on but you have put this in perspective!
Why do insurance companies charge Protestant Churches on averf ge 10-15 % more than ANY other organizations to be insured against incidences of other organizations.Protestants and Jews YOUR ox is soon to be gored for EXACTLY the same malfeasance.I agree that not incident of homosexual predatory behaviour against young men and adolescent boys in the Church that Christ Himself founded should have happened. However I refuse to sit idly by while Protestants(wose churches are absolutely riddled with this filth)smugly condemn Catholicism and our Pope who is being falsely pilloried PERSONALLY in the media for Nothing that HE is culpable of.Protestants your time in the spotlight is coming, hold onto your hats! We’ve started the clean-up,you haven’t even begun to admit to your worse problems,NOT EVEN TO YOURSELVES.If you require a flood of evidence and statistics Lemonbeam and I will be delighted to provide them. That goes for the other lung of the Church too-the Orthodox.Get your barf bags ready and just say the word.

*And as I have told my kids when they have asked to do something I didn’t approve of…and their retort is…‘everyone is doing it…’’ Well, I don’t care about everyone, I care about you.:o

That said…I think it’s very strange and rather witch-huntish (ugh, bad word finding today haha) for the media to ONLY single out the Catholic Church in this regard. Especially, when sexual abuse is widespread in other religious groups. In that regard? I agree with you. But, I won’t be gloating over such allegations made in other religious groups…and neither should any of us. Children were abused here. There is nothing advantageous to me as a Catholic to hear that this was also going on with my Protestant brethren. :(*

This is not about gloating about abuse that going on in other religions. How could you think that? It’s horrible! Abuse that goes on anywhere is horrible. I don’t know about you, my friend Soutane, but I don’t have a problem with the media reporting abuse cases if they have evidence for them and not wildly speculated like the New York times reporting that the Pope had been involved in a cover up in Wisconsin, which has since proved to be false. I doubt the Pope will get an apology though, anyway, I wish the media would report on all the abuse that goes in the public schools instead of protecting the school system,

The total number of all priests accused of sexual abuse of minors is less than 5% of all Catholic clergy. That means more than 95% of Catholic clergy have never been accused and are doing their jobs correctly, living quiet and holy lives in service to their parishes.

The Orthodox Jewish community is being protected from the mainstream media. The attrocious abuse that has gone in Brooklyn for example, is just totally unreported by the mainstream media. 40 minors in this small Jewish community said they were abused in the space of a year. The only place I heard it reported was The Catholic League, which isn’t really a news broadcaster. I heard of it nowhere else.

If you are going to report abuse that has been done in the Catholic Church, report the abuse that going on in the schools and other religious communities as well. Which is not going on at the moment.

Sexual abuse of minors is slightly higher in Protestant churches according to data released by insurance agencies that underwrite them. Would you ever think that though? Unless you’d done the research yourself to find out. People seem to think this is a Catholic problem. Because the media does not report these crimes!

As The Catholic Knight says, there really is a cover-up going on here, and it’s a cover-up of statistical facts. What we have in the European media today is a deliberate attempt to hide the facts and smear the reputation of the Catholic Church, particularly the pope if they can get to him.

catholicknight.blogspot.com/2010/03/catholic-sex-abuse-scandal-and-cover-up.html

And the American media is at the same game as well.

This is not about attacking Protestants or any others, this is about wanting balance in the media and fair reporting.

I’ve said it before-the Church is cleaning up the mess caused by 1-3% of homosexual predatory Clerical rats.To REALLY root out the problem bring in the Dominicans.Institute a brand new Inquisition.Have a public and spiritual auto de fe and burn these Clerical rats figuratively at the stake.
I suggest that we then have a worldwide inquisition into EVERY protestant faith, all 30,000+ of them,The Jews, especially the Hassids and Orthodox, the Orthodox Church,The Boy Scouts,The Big Brothers,All members of any coaching or sporting organizations that deal with children, all daycare employees, all teachers(the absolute second worse) and all parents (,the all-time worst).
The Catholic Church is dealing with its mess but smug protestants whose glee and Schaudenfreude is all too obvious will be the next target.
We Catholics have shot ourselves in the foot which has impaired our ability to spread the gospel and once the anti-Catholic bigotry of the secular media is satiated because the real reason the assault is so exaggerarted and relentless is because they HATE the uncompromising message of the Church:Abortion is MURDER,there is no such thing as same-sex :so-called" marriage, pornography and premarital sex is sinful and harmful and most importantly there is NO such thing as relative morality, but absolute Truth in the person of Jesus Christ:then its YOUR turn and I can hardly wait.As a matter of fact its starting now much to yhe Chagrin of many pprotestants.I would recommend that you pick up a copy of Macleans magazine a weekly Canadian Newsmagazine which examines the issue quite fairly to the outrage of its secular readers.I’ll try to find the date of the issue. But as I said YOUR time is coming and it ain’t gonna be pretty or fun either.I don’t berlieve in karma but…

Has anyone thought about the timing of all this? Coming right after the Obama health bill passing with the support of all of these liberal pro-abortion Catholics and the “pro-life” Stupak caving in to Obama. The Catholic church in America opposed the bill. Something about the timing of all of this (and the fact that some of the claims have proven to be false) seems very fishy to me.

I don’t get it either. Why are claims from the 1950s, and beyond coming into the media attention now?

Personally I don’t like it when Catholics defend the Church by saying ‘other groups abuse also.’ To me that seems like changing the subject. However if this mess prompts Catholics and others to look into abuse anywhere else and bring the problems to light, that is a good thing. I support truth and help for victims wherever they were abused: in the family; Scouts; school, in any other faith, and anywhere else.

I just hope this doesn’t deteriorate into religious warfare. Has anyone tried to create an interfaith coalition of people who advocate for victims and provide information on child abuse in all environments? That might be a positive step.

I also want to reiterate something I said once before which is that incest perpetration and recovery was the subject of very intense interest and publicity from about the mid 1980s to the mid 1990s. It’s not true that this news about the Church is the only time child sexual abuse got a great deal of publicity. Literally hundreds of books have been written about recovery from incest and child sexual abuse in general. Dr Judith Lewis Herman wrote two of the earliest, most comprehensive books which were Father-Daughter Incest and Trauma and Recovery. And a lot of these therapists and survivors were given a very hard time by skeptics who really didn’t want to hear that incest was a significant social problem. Then somehow it became old news.

But I think an interfaith coalition of people who focus on the general issues of child sexual abuse - in all environments - and work with expert therapists many of whom have decades of experience in this field - that might be a positive outcome of all this. I’d like to see people cooperating to bring things to light and help stop abuse of power wherever it occurs.

*The abuse cases have been coming forward since Bush was in office, and Obama was nowhere on the horizon. *

As most of the North American media is secularist, leftist and quasi-marxist,this is their moment if triumphalism as they now have a president who represents them to a “T”.This dude is going to be a one term president just like that pantywaist Jimmy Carter once America wakes up as it seems to be doing now.You guys need a CREDIBLE republican candidate, one whose morally conservative not like McCain whose voting record was anything but conservative. And if there are any Americans here who resent having a Canadian lecture them-Tough beans. We’ve been lectured to here for years by Americans and now we have a Conservative government and you have the most ultra-letist government in your history.Whatever happens in your country affects the rest of the world especially Canada.Your country because of its size, power and influence is precedent setting and the precedents I see Obama coming up with are the antithesis of I want for my country, and it will only encourage our home grown loons like the NDP and sadly the party of total secularity the Liberals.

I find this media campaign to be a tactic to program the pablum spoonfed masses to employ against Catholics, “You should be ashamed of yourself for being a member of (or supporting) a depraved institution that not only rapes the mind’s of the most vulnerable in our society, back also an attack on their being.” And the likes. Using shame against us, and I’ve now had it done to me more than once. I try to avoid the counter of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I try to appeal that it is we Catholics who are outraged by the betrayal of our trust, and that we want every dark corner routed of this evil. But the raw emotionalism has got most people riled now, and I don’t think anyone will apply reason to this issue. Even when all this panic dies down, there will be those that will always think that the pope is somehow above reproach, and that civil authorities have been corrupted. I can only hope that this is a test for us all, and that light will defeat darkness.

We are not changing the subject.Read my posts and Lemonbeams before presuming to comment on them.We admit our guilt, and the horror, and we are doing something about it but we ae re SICK of being the scapegoats od this SOCIETAL problem. The glee and undusguised shaudenfreude of some proteatant and other posters is enoigh to make me puke.WE ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.Protestantism and the rest of the world has the same problem IN SPADES but the world acts as if this is exclusively a Catholic problem.I’m going to quote you another recent post I made which I hope will EDUCATE you that we are not trying to deflect deserved culpability from OUR PART of the problem.Give me a moment to find it.

*These are such interesting points…and let’s talk about conspiracy theories for a moment. I don’t believe that this has anything to do with Obama getting into office, but we all know that the Catholic Church is scoffed at for so many reasons, when it comes to Her prolife stance, and voice on issues like Terri Schiavo, and stem cell research. That said, I think that the media wants to paint a picture that men who BECOME priests, turn into pedophiles. That the Church Herself! turns people into evil, sexual deviants.

Think about THAT for a moment. That is where I think there could very well be a conspiracy with the media as it relates to their obsession with exposing the Catholic Church…These cases should be in the news, but the media is having a feeding frenzy over the Catholic Church, and not shining the light on any other religous groups…and I really have to believe that they want to paint a picture that ‘whatever goes on behind those Church doors’ is what is turning normal men into deviants. But, the truth is? These men came to the priesthood as sexual deviants…not the other way around. They came into the Church as ill men…and thus, carried out horrible deeds.

That is where I think things are going to get ugly for the Church, because people will now start creating truths in their minds about priests, that are not true…*

Dominicans.Inquisition.Spiritual auto de fe.No more homosexuals admitted to seminary.Beg for forgiveness to each victim and person in the world.Pay financial compensation even if it bankrupts every diocese.Remain pristine and above reproach for the next 300 years then MAYBE,MAYBE,we’ll regain a smidgeon of the respect we had prior to VaticanII.

“…Americans here who resent having a Canadian lecture them-Tough beans…”
Although I feel embarressed by what the U of Ottawa did to Ann Coulter. She irritates the crud out of me, but on the Michael Coren show the other night I found her to be charming, smart, and suprisingly… right (no pun intended 😉

The dishonesty in reporting is staggering.

Cardinal Ratzinger had a Bishop of another diocese request that he lodge a supposedly mentally ill priest in a rectory near where he was to receive psychological therapy. No indication is given that the details of the priest’s sexual perversion were disclosed to the Cardinal.

Cardinal Ratzinger never had authority over the priest and he never transferred him anywhere.
