We are not changing the subject.Read my posts and Lemonbeams before presuming to comment on them.We admit our guilt, and the horror, and we are doing something about it but we ae re SICK of being the scapegoats od this SOCIETAL problem. The glee and undusguised shaudenfreude of some proteatant and other posters is enoigh to make me puke.WE ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.Protestantism and the rest of the world has the same problem IN SPADES but the world acts as if this is exclusively a Catholic problem.I’m going to quote you another recent post I made which I hope will EDUCATE you that we are not trying to deflect deserved culpability from OUR PART of the problem.Give me a moment to find it.

I’m wondering if also there are too many ‘layers’ of clergy…I mean…this one wasn’t over this one…and this one didn’t know…and aside from the abuse cases…just things that happen locally in my parish seem SO different than how Pope Benedict would feel about it…it’s like there is too much leeway for Bishops, because the Pope gives them some discretionary abilities. Not saying they should be told every move to make, but I just think this is why we are starting to see more liturgical abuses in different Dioceses throughout the country, for example. And then of course, the layers of people involved in these abuse scandals. I just think there needs to be a hard look given to tradition, and how it’s affecting the Church’s internal communication. (on all matters, really)

Dominicans.Inquisition.Spiritual auto de fe.No more homosexuals admitted to seminary.Beg for forgiveness to each victim and person in the world.Pay financial compensation even if it bankrupts every diocese.Remain pristine and above reproach for the next 300 years then MAYBE,MAYBE,we’ll regain a smidgeon of the respect we had prior to VaticanII.
I’m not advocating the destruction of the Church and I understand that a lot has been done. What I was trying to say is that I think an interfaith coalition of people including Catholics, who raise awareness about abuse in all environments including in other faiths and non-religious environments, would be a good idea and a positive outcome of all this.

Although I feel embarressed by what the U of Ottawa did to Ann Coulter. She irritates the crud out of me, but on the Michael Coren show the other night I found her to be charming, smart, and suprisingly… right (no pun intended 😉

emp
Those little coddled twerps and their marxist profs at an institution that we support through our taxes are nothing but fascist, nazi, racist,(Israeli Jew haters)bookburners who believe in free speech for everyone but themselves. The university administration are cowards who should have hired police to discipline the little snotnosed creeps.I’ve read EVERY one of her books and yes she says outrageous things to goad the left, but her greatest crime is that she is a conservative, beautiful, and articulate WOMAN who dares to disagree with the totalitarian left, just like that other cutie Sarah Palin. The ignorant things she has said about Canada, rankle but we at least partially deserve.Shame on those anti-democratic thugs in Ottawa, they all deserve to be taken out to the woodshed. These are the same little creeps who deny Pro-life groups club status and drown out anf persecute (with the complicity of the university admin.)ANY pro-life speaker. They emulate the Red Guard under Mao.

I think that innocent people in the Church who are the vast majority, both lay people and clergy, have also had their trust abused and been affected in ways that are very unfair.

Which is exactly what Lemonbeam and I have been saying had you cared to thoroughly read our posts.

I apologize for offending you and misrepresenting your positions. I have been reading a lot and trying to take it all in but this got to be somewhat overwhelming. I do think there is a real need for caring adults to work together to expose abuse in all religions and elsewhere.

Whose general view was that?

The Police?
The Courts?
The Church?
Some information I’ve found online: Usually people of the psychiatric persuasion thought therapy was the answer to all mental illness; and as Paedophiles were considered mentally ill, and not a scourge of society it was felt the do - good - er’s could cure them by talking through their previous actions. However it is now widely accepted that therapy is unlikely to prove successful as paedophiles choose to be and live this way. However the same therapy advocates felt people with Epilepsy were possessed by Demons . . . and locked them in institutions for the insane.

The Catholic League has a story today:

That was the drill of the day: after being treated, the patient (I prefer the term offender) returns to work. It’s still the drill of the day in many secular quarters today, particularly in the public schools. A more hard-line approach, obviously, makes more sense, but the therapeutic industry is very powerful.

catholicleague.org/release.php?id=1811

The Church wasn’t the originator of the belief that therapy could cure pedophilia. And weirdly enough, I bet the Priests back then who sent the sex abusers away for therapy didn’t think they where doing anything wrong. This was the general belief of the day among Psychologists and others.

We are absolutely wounded.I personally have been crushed spiritually and I have to"be like steel"to not let it affect my love for the Divine Institution created by Christ. When I was an altar boy many years ago a priest cautioned me to not confuse the Church with some of the creeps in it.He didn’t use the word creeps but you get my drift. How do you think Canadian Catholics felt at the betrayal of Bishop Lahey for the disgrace he brought to the Institution that I love more than any other on earth.I,we, wanted to literally strangle him. That’s how bad it was-his sin lead ME to sin,but enough is enough.Iam TOTALLY serious when I say we must have a world wide inquisition where even the innocent 97% of innocent clergy must undergo the indignity of personal investigation and questioning, otherwise this will go on and on to the absolute delight of he who is most unclean-SATAN.

We must demand this of every,Bishop,Archbishop,Cardinal and even the Servant of the Servants of God.This is one formerly docile and trusting sheep who is growing fangs and demands of ALL our shepards that the flock be protected from the slavering wolves among us and the scandal and hurt caused to OUR lambs.I personally feel we should bombard our Bishops, the college of Cardinals and the Pope himself with our demands for such an Inquisition.I know the Church is not a democracy but I am nobodies fool and I want this stinking mess cleaned up once and for all and with absolute finality and then we can get on with the mission that Christ has assigned to His Body on earth.

Hi everyone, this is my first post 🙂 Now onto business…

I was directed to this article from digg, and as an atheist, I wondered how Catholics as a whole felt about the subject. BOY was I surprised  . I can’t believe that others are:
  1. Blaming the media for focusing on the Pope. How dare they (the media), mention the Pope just because he played a role in keeping a child molester in the church. That liberal leftist media, always out to make the church look bad.
  2. Bringing politics into something that doesn’t even involve politics. Lets keep a little perspective.
  3. Defending the actions of the Pope. Put simply, if you are a sexual molester, you go to jail. To say that it was commonplace to allow these priests to continue operation while undergoing “therapy” makes me a little sick.
  4. Attacking other religions for not having enough media coverage on their own pedophilia problems. Well if you didn’t know, all groups have this problem. Trying to shift blame to others only serves to demonstrate your deepening insecurities.
That being said, I’d be surprised if any inquiries arise from this incident. The Catholic church is so rich and powerful that they needn’t fear this article. I certainly haven’t heard of any police investigations our really any further action taken by law enforcement, has anyone else?

While an inter faith coalition to raise awareness is a good step, don’t forget to set up avenues where victims can make anonymous reports. Also, I think if anything were set up it should extend into the local community.

@whatevergirl - I am thrilled every time I get to read something you write. Your method of thought really appeals to me. Hopefully i’ll get to read another something soon 😃

*These are such interesting points…and let’s talk about conspiracy theories for a moment. I don’t believe that this has anything to do with Obama getting into office, but we all know that the Catholic Church is scoffed at for so many reasons, when it comes to Her prolife stance, and voice on issues like Terri Schiavo, and stem cell research. That said, I think that the media wants to paint a picture that men who BECOME priests, turn into pedophiles. That the Church Herself! turns people into evil, sexual deviants.

Think about THAT for a moment. That is where I think there could very well be a conspiracy with the media as it relates to their obsession with exposing the Catholic Church…These cases should be in the news, but the media is having a feeding frenzy over the Catholic Church, and not shining the light on any other religous groups…and I really have to believe that they want to paint a picture that ‘whatever goes on behind those Church doors’ is what is turning normal men into deviants. But, the truth is? These men came to the priesthood as sexual deviants…not the other way around. They came into the Church as ill men…and thus, carried out horrible deeds.

That is where I think things are going to get ugly for the Church, because people will now start creating truths in their minds about priests, that are not true…*
That said, I think that the media wants to paint a picture that men who BECOME priests, turn into pedophiles. That the Church Herself! turns people into evil, sexual deviants.

That’s a very interesting point. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the media’s intention. Hopefully the good and honest people out there can see through this, and note that 95%+ of Priests, in the last 50 years, have never been involved in any kind of sex abuse, and that most Priests are good, holy men.

I apologize for offending you and misrepresenting your positions. I have been reading a lot and trying to take it all in but this got to be somewhat overwhelming. I do think there is a real need for caring adults to work together to expose abuse in all religions and elsewhere.
Apology absolutely accepted:)This IS overwhelming and we MUST work together. But we can’t just pray about it anymore nor sing Kumbayah. Now is the time fir ALL catholics and good people of faith to scream to the heavens for something difinitive to be done.Write to your bishop, your Cardinal and the Pope and do it weekly.ALL of us!Scream to heaven for something worldwide and definitive to be done.I’m entirely serious about an Inquisition and the Dominicans.NO MORE!!!

1) Blaming the media for focusing on the Pope. How dare they (the media), mention the Pope just because he played a role in keeping a child molester in the church. That liberal leftist media, always out to make the church look bad.

To your first point, the Times offers absolutely no evidence to support this charge. All it says is that his office “was copied on a memo” about the transfer of Peter Hullermann. According to Church officials, the story says the memo was routine and was “unlikely to have landed on the archbishop’s desk.”

Let’s say Archbishop Joseph Ratzinger, now the pope, did in fact learn of the transfer. So what? Wasn’t that what he expected to happen? After all, we know from a March 16 Times story that when Ratzinger’s subordinates recommended therapy for Hullermann, he approved it. That was the drill of the day: after being treated, the patient (I prefer the term offender) returns to work. It’s still the drill of the day in many secular quarters today, particularly in the public schools. A more hard-line approach, obviously, makes more sense, but the therapeutic industry is very powerful.
2) Bringing politics into something that doesn’t even involve politics. Lets keep a little perspective.

To your second point, who’s bringing Politics into it? One person mentioned Obama. Are Catholics not allowed to have opinions anymore? This is a conversation we’re having, it doesn’t mean that view is right, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
3) Defending the actions of the Pope. Put simply, if you are a sexual molester, you go to jail. To say that it was commonplace to allow these priests to continue operation while undergoing “therapy” makes me a little sick.

To your third point, what exactly are you condemning the Pope for doing? It’s already been proven that he did not protect, neither was he complicit in any sex abuse cover up in the Wisconsin case. To your point about therapy, you seem to have no clue regarding therapy and pedophila worked back in the 1950s and around that time.

Usually people of the psychiatric persuasion thought therapy was the answer to all mental illness; and as Paedophiles were considered mentally ill, and not a scourge of society it was felt the do - good - er’s could cure them by talking through their previous actions. However it is now widely accepted that therapy is unlikely to prove successful as paedophiles choose to be and live this way. However the same therapy advocates felt people with Epilepsy were possessed by Demons . . . and locked them in institutions for the insane.

The Church wasn’t the originator of the belief that therapy could cure pedophilia. And weirdly enough, I bet the Priests back then who sent the sex abusers away for therapy didn’t think they where doing anything wrong. This was the general belief of the day among Psychologists and others.
4) Attacking other religions for not having enough media coverage on their own pedophilia problems. Well if you didn’t know, all groups have this problem. Trying to shift blame to others only serves to demonstrate your deepening insecurities.

To your fourth point, so you think that is perfectly acceptable for the media not to report sex abuse that is happening in the Jewish community, Protestant community etc. at a much higher rate than it is has happened in the Catholic Church? You think that people don’t deserve to know? You think it’s okay that the media establishment is protecting the public school system? We’re not shifting the blame to anyone else. We just want fairness in reporting, is that so much to ask?

To your fifth point, there is going to be a state inquiry into the abuse in Ireland:

@lynx

Thank you for joining Catholic Answers, your questions are fair in that this is now the common perception among not only people outside of the Catholic faith, but those who are dealing with doubt inside it.
