Love this Vicar of Christ, this disciple of Our Lord. Love him for his courage, for his dedication to do what is right.

I joined the Church under him, and have fond feelings for his views. Does he now become a “retired religious”?

I suspect he was pushing for a restoration of Latin Mass, I hope his successor keeps that up.

In any event, I wish him well and trust in God.

I hate to see this, I really do. I was hoping we would have him of sound mind and body for several years to come yet. However, I do understand his reasoning in that we do need a Pope who is capable of acting with swiftness and surety.

Now the question to my mind is will we get someone as orthodox and bold as he is. In the last conclave, the dissenters on the left and the faithful Catholics with modernist tendencies were very disappointed at his election, not to mention those in the media. This may sound harsh, but I hope they have abundant cause for consternation this time around.

I hate to lose him, absolutely hate it.
I know, I do too. But we must have faith. This is all part of God’s plan.

I will be very sad to see him retire, however, we should all have faith that God will lead us to an equally great and humble man to lead His Holy Church. Thank you Pope Benedict XVI for your service and love to us all and to the Trinity.

Yes, and we should all embrace and love the next Holy Spirit chosen Vicar of Christ.

In these times, we have to think ABOVE this world. Things happen for God’s reasons and in God’s times. 🙂

this has to be a fake…there’s a world youth day this year! He had plans to visit the USA in 2014 or 2015 for a family conference i thought. This is also too suspicious…and you know the liberal religion haters, who especially hate that he refuses to change Catholic teaching…they would be celebrating in the streets…
What do you mean “suspicious”? Suspicious how? Between this and the guy wondering about the ‘end times’…

I swear, Papal deaths/resignations sure bring out the wild side.

His doctors had already told him no more transatlantic flights due to his health. Perhaps part of the timing is so that the next Pope will be able to attend World Youth Day considering how important it is to reach the youth especially in today’s world, and how much it means for World Youth Day for a Pope to attend.
There’s a new tradition starting. When we get a new pope, it’ll be a few months before WYD 😃

Maybe the first American Pope…like Cardinal Burke or Cardinal Dolan! They are both great Catholic leaders!

Benedict is not a religious. He is a secular priest. Although his title has yet to be decided upon his retirement, most likely something like “Bishop of Rome, Emeritus”

Well, FOX News has had wall to wall coverage. So far two of the commentators have
echoed what I have said, namely, that 1. the new pope will be young (early 50’s)
and 2. non-european. One commentator suggested the Cardinal from Ghana. (Sorry I don’t remember his name.)

Is the issue really that… earthly?

I mean, the Pope is supposed to be guided by the Holy Spirit. How can a Pope be “ideologically” incorrect? Not possible.
I’ll be the first to say that I barely understand the papacy. Does he have, like the president, a cabinet from which he can be assisted with “ideological” issues? If not, and his advanced years, sadly, show incapacitation mentally, would it then be possible to be incorrect? He is, unfortunately, equally prone to the ills of us all. Some of the greatest minds fall prey to Alzheimer’s, etc. Not suggesting that this is the present reason.
Genuinely asked, with respect.

(I like your signature quote, BTW)

Please forgive me if this post seems to be rambling, but there are a few things that I simply have to get out.

I am saddened to hear that the Holy Father’s health has declined to the point that he feels he has to make this decision. I am sure that it is not something that was done lightly or without a great amount of prayer and reflection.

Secondly, I am saddened and upset by some of the postings that I have read both here and on the internet at large. Debates about liberal v conservative, arguments over the correct person to be the next pope. Why do we have these debates and arguments, especially among faithful Catholics?

If you believe in the Holy Catholic Church and all that it teaches, than you believe that the Pope and the Church are protected from error. The Holy Spirit will choose the next Pope through the Cardinals when they meet in conclave. He may not lead them to choose the person some or many of us would want. However, He will lead them to choose the best person for the Church and its future. Whether you like the new mass or the old, whether you think the Church is becoming too liberal or staying too conservative, whether you think the next Pope should be younger or older, it does not matter. All of these things are irrelevant because they are human thoughts expressing human concerns.

Our Church, the one true Church was founded by Jesus 2000 years ago, and has been led by Him ever since. He will continue to lead His church until He chooses to return. It is high time that we put aside our human feelings and thoughts and trust that this is the Church that was founded by and is continually being led by our Lord and He will guide It and protect It from error.

These decisions simply are not ours, they belong to the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ, One God Now and Forever.

By the Grace of God, may the next Pope be strengthened for the mission that he is about to take and may we be softened enough in our hearts to understand that whoever he is and whatever he may do, it is the will of Our Lord at Work!

If they’re going to elect a younger candidate, I’d be elated to see Dolan be elevated. If they’re going with an older candidate I’d love to see Arinze elevated.

I would suggest that the new Pope will be Italian, born in Rome, and will take the name Peter.

It is always amusing to see people making all the guesses to fill time on various news programs. The truth is, the Holy Spirit will guide the Lord’s Cardinals into making the proper choice, and that choice is often NOT OBVIOUS.

God will give His Church, and the world, what He whats, and what we need.

This really has to be viewed far removed from normal worldly thought.

i’m speechless

who is up for fasting for the pope the conclave and the next pope 😃

I would love to see Dolan the next Bishop of Rome, especially after all of the attacks on our Church from our government.
