This is true. In fact any Catholic male can be elected, even a layman. (Unless the Pope changes the rules while he’s still the Pope.)
Yes, I’m going to be the next pope. 😃 The cardinals will be inspired with the Spirit with a name they have never heard of before.

Ditto. What a sad day. It is an interesting contrast between the infirmity of Bl. John Paul and this decision by Pope Benedict. Both pontiffs made a hard call under the charism of the office and I have no doubt both decisions will prove a blessing to the Church in different ways.
I’m very sad to see him go! Worse still is reading the shameful comments people on Twitter and Facebook are making about Benedict XVI.

I’m praying his succesor is as strong and faithful as Benedict and JP II were. Maybe a American Cardinal will be in consideration? (Rigali, Dolan or Burke?)

That’s in bad taste!! :takethat:
I truly admire him for his courage, interest and openness to use more modern means of evangelisation, I really do. I don’t like it at all when people make fun of it like “Oh look, an old man using an iPad.”

I don’t understand the negative reactions here, Pope Benedict XVI is quite old and I doubt he would be resigning if he thought it would do damage to the Church, I think in his view, his resignation might be best for the Church if he thinks he cannot adequately rise up to the demands of the office in his advanced age.

When I think about how I’m sad, I think about how much sadder I would have been to wake up and hear that he had passed away. So we should count our blessings!

Exactly! That means I can try to visit him in Bavaria without the Swiss Guard stopping me! 😃 But seriously, it would be interesting to get a post-papal perspective.

I bet you his successor will be one of his understudys, “The circle is now complete. When I left you I was but the learner. Now I am the master.”

OK, I’m having fun today. 🙂

To their credit, the Daily Mail did not have the kind of coverage we are talking about from some of the other news outlets. They are to be commended for this.
