Indeed. I will trust in the Holy Spirit, knowing that He gave us this Pope, and He will give us a worthy successor.

I will pray for Pope Benedict, as well as his potential successor. May God bless and protect them both.
Well said! 👍

I think Pope John Paul II also had a letter prepared in case he experienced prolonged incapacity.

Pop Benedict XVI is a big part of my fledgling Catholic history in that I converted 2 years ago and he’s the only Pope that I’ve known. He’s a great writer and theologian as well which helped me decide to convert.

I respect the decision. I think maybe he thinks that the Church is need of a younger more vigiours and physically fit Pope that has the energy to lead the church forward. I can agree with that in some respect, that a younger more energetic and healthy Pope could perhaps be more effective than Pope Benedict is in his current health.

I hope he continues writing, but I do believe the Lord will provide us with another great leader.

I’m sorry to see him go, but I completely understand why he’d do such. His career before becoming the Pope speaks to a man who did not traffic in half-measures and imprecise efforts. Further the word about his health and how it impacts his ability to travel and preach present major hurdles towards leading the charge of the New Evangelization.

So in 8 short years Pope Benedict XVI has enacted reforms, solidified matters of doctrine and faith, and installed many new cardinals and bishops to carry forth the Gospel and the formative traditions of the Church. He has made straight a path, and recognized that God intends for someone else to walk upon it.

None of this, of course, will stop the Anglo-sphere media to waste hours after hours speculating on how some sort of “liberal” papal candidate might be elected and usher in a new era of homosexuality, women-“priests,” and all sorts of other nonsense. We’re but hours into the wake of this announcement and I’m already awash in un-readable articles steeped in nothing but the painful ignorance of our horribly debased Fourth Estate.

I’m eager to see this transition go swiftly and smoothly, selfishly so that I can endure the least nonsense possible from the Know-Nothings and more purposefully so that the Church can quietly busy herself in the business of God’s Kingdom while the nattering nabobs go about their own meaningless ways.

I’m quite surprised by all this. As I understand, John Paul II was also very ill in the end of his life, but didn’t resign.

I turned off the radio this morning. I couldn’t take that utter garbage that they are talking about.
I will only listen to my trusted Catholic Friends Trusted professors at my seminary and ETWN (maybe alittle from the Catholic Channel) on this issue, the News media always has their agendas in this stuff, While ETWN and friends may their’s are alittle closer to what the Church is thinking as far as the next pope goes.

Horses for courses. JP2 was explicitly making a point about the sanctity and value of the lives even of the elderly and frail. B16 seems to feel no need to repeat the message made so strikingly by his predecessor.

Every news agency, EWTN included, has an agenda! How will you think they will react IF in their eyes, a liberal pope is elected? 🤷

I think EWTN’s loyalty to the Pope would override their conservative stances. More likely, they’ll keep seeing conservative slants in a liberal Pope’s agenda, but they’ll respect him as much as they did the other two.

Yes, he was very ill near the end.

However, the two Popes are very different. John Paul II was Pope for over 30 years. He was only 58 when he became Pope where as Bennedict was 78 when he become Pope.
John Paul II was also probably the most widley loved Pope of the last 100 years where as Benedict has had a pretty short time as Pope and the world is much more anti-religion as well.

Pope Benedict XVI has been Pope during very difficult times for the Church where much of the world has been attacking the Church. Not that John Paull II didn’t have anything going on during his time as Pope but most of the biggest things he dealt with were important to the church but external. Benedict had to face direct attacks on the church.

Perhaps Pope Benedict thinks that the someone with more energy is needed to take these direct attacks head on.

Not to mention you have different Popes with different Personalities and different times.

You just can’t compare the two situations, IMO. Some may have thought it was a good idea that John Paul II stepped down as well but I think each made the right decision.

I suspect you are right. Benedict has certainly stacked the deck with cardinals who will make sure the breath of fresh air John XXIII spoke about never happens again
So Popes Paul VI,John Paul I, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI WERE NOT a breath of fresh air?
