FWIW, he “resigned” in Latin. That’s as official as it gets.

That’s also why it took a while to come to the realization. 😦

I suspect you are right. Benedict has certainly stacked the deck with cardinals who will make sure the breath of fresh air John XXIII spoke about never happens again
Oh golly gee willikers, I wonder what you’re getting at here? Only in a fantasy world would J23 have supported things like gay marriage, women priests and contraception. J23 was all about giving the rank and file some authority over day to day living, not over doctrine. And the Magesterium has about as much authority over the doctrine as we do. The doctrine is Truth and Truth does not change. Period and end of discussion.

J23 did us all a service in making Mass easier to understand, especially for the poor and less educated who could not learn Latin. He also opened the door to ecumenism so we could more easily preach the Gospel to those of other faiths while still retaining the fact that the Church contains the fullness of the Truth. He would never have advocated for anything like female ordination, gay marriage or contraception.

Unfortunately, as we’ve seen, that breathe of air has been filled with the smoke of satan and thankfully our Holy Father has done quite a bit to chase that out of the church.

His doctors had already told him no more transatlantic flights due to his health. Perhaps part of the timing is so that the next Pope will be able to attend World Youth Day considering how important it is to reach the youth especially in today’s world, and how much it means for World Youth Day for a Pope to attend.
I agree.

I’m reading on this thread an inference about liberal and conservative choices for Pope, but how ‘liberal’ are we talking about? What are the liberal views as opposed to conservative, I assume a liberal’s viewpoint will not condone female priests, contraception or other issues?

But there are no Cardinal’s with such views are there? Even if there was as Pope with such views I doubt he could not change doctrine on the priesthood or contraception

Every news agency, EWTN included, has an agenda! How will you think they will react IF in their eyes, a liberal pope is elected? 🤷
With faith, as always, and as opposed to a focus on the politics (deck stacking???) Every Pope, is someone’s liberal and another’s conservatives, which is why such terms are meaningless.

That’s what I would hope, I genuinely don’t understand then what are the difference between the liberal and conservative views in this instance. Obviously, there are some priests that are ‘too’ liberal in their views and opinions that go against the church’s teachings, so what does it mean in relation to the new Pontif?

There was I believe the Cardinal, think that is what he was, from Italy who might have thought Priests should have the right to marry but I think that was as liberal as he was and he passed away.

So many posts, the Cardinal from Nigeria might be real good and age would not bother me.

What bothers me is that Nigeria is beset with many problems and especially a lot of terrorists in the northern part.

Ghana, which is a sort of relative nation of Nigeria doesn’t really have that problem.

So Nigeria and Ghana were English Colonies or however you would describe it but are big Catholic nations, interesting. Does anyone know why this is so? Thanks.

Not sure how that is relevant to Cardinal Turkson being Pope.

Cardinal Turkson’s from Ghana, Ghana does not have heavy Islamic Terrorism. Nigeria has a lot.

Not sure what your point is.
Pope Benedict XVI has announced he will retire on February 28 and Cardinal Peter Turkson of Ghana is next in line, according to Paddy Power, a betting website.
Pope Benedict is reportedly retiring “due to advanced age”. The 85-year-old’s papalcy began on April 19, 2005, and less than eight years later he is calling it a day. He’s also been using a cane and it was reported he struggled to read the text of an address he delivered in Rome.
‘After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,’ a quote from his resignation stated.
Cardinal Peter Turkson, currently the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace is the early market leader at 9/4 and speaks six languages. The Ghanaian understands Latin and Greek and has seen plenty of support early doors.
Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet is 5/2 to be elected as the next Pope. He is Prefect of the congregation for Bishops which is seen as a powerful position within the Vatican, it seems. According to one of the Paddy Power lads who has his finger on the Catholic pulse, Cardinal Marc has experience of working in Latin in America, is a friend of Benedict and is apparently outgoing and charismatic. At 64 he is about the right age but could be seen as too young if anything!
