This will likely be good. There are a ton of rumors going around on the reasoning, etc. behind this. I suspect it is exactly what the Holy Father said it is.

I know, its ridiculous.

I remember back in 2005 (when B16 was elected) it was the same - Media outlets trumpeting “this is a real opportunity for the Church to change, and embrace sodomy, divorce, infanticide and female clergy”

The mainstream western media is mostly a joke.

Way back in 1967 my high school religion teacher gave us a rule of thumb: " When you read of Church matters in the secular press, you can, in good conscience, believe the opposite."

This was way before Al Gore invented the internet. You can guess what Father Maur would have said about that.:eek:

So…the Holy Father may have telegraphed his eventual resignation.

I recall that he was somewhat reluctant to be Pope and was looking forward to retirement. Like the obedient, loving servant he is, he served the faithful well.
 
i am joining this thread late although i did see the breaking news this morning.
i applaud Pope Benedict XVI for realizing his weaknesses and wanting to resign.
i had heard rumors last fall which were quickly denounced by the Vatican, but he does seem frail and i know that his schedule is busy. it does surprise me that he has made the decision to step down during the Lenten season, but i know that Easter week with so many services must take a lot of stamina.
anyhow, my thoughts and prayers are for the next Pope. i am very fond of our current Pope and i am sad that he is resigning, but i can understand his reasons. i hope that our next Pope will be as wise and knowledgable as Pope Benedict XVI.
 
The Vincent brown show, on Irish tv, now is discussing PBV1. They’re talking about the Pope, one priest on the panel who was his past doctoral student (he’s about 60/70, himself) - said he had a good sense of humour, very caustic, drank a beer (no doubt German) when relaxed, a GREAT listener and philosopher.

Spoke too soon, now the other side, a female, saying he accused women, wishing to be priests, being the equivalent of child abusers (I am sure he did not), not giving condoms to men in Africa, which there are numerous threads on CAF showing this was the correct advice, i.e. condoms increased the spread of aids.

Now, they’re saying he said homosexuality was evil, other religions are not equivalent, yada, yada, yada and it was not the media’s reporting it - but his words! WRONG! It was their SPIN on his words. Needless, to say it’s now the AWL favourite - child abuse! Now, they’re onto ‘gay marriage’ and saying he was intolerant of gays - NO, the acts, not homosexuals.

Ach, sure, sometimes you just want to give up!😦 NOT!!!👍

Yes they like to stick the boot in, makes the news more interesting for the vultures & Catholic Church haters to which there are quite a few !
 
Anyone notice how many media outlets have headlines like:

“Pope’s bombshell sends **troubled church **scrambling to replace him”

Someone aware me on the bolded part. Last time I checked the Church was live and well and there is no scrambling because there is an organized method for selecting Popes.

Anything that is over 2000 years old is bound to have a few problems, but it’s God’s Church and he said nothing can come against it and succeed, even the “Gates of Hell”👍
 
I’ve been meaning to read the books that the Holy Father wrote, but I haven’t got around to it. I hope him the best, though, and I hope his health recovers. 🙂
