Instead of analysing the “Peter” part in “Peter the Roman,” maybe we should analyse the “Roman” part instead and then draw a conclusion from there. I personally find it hard to believe that Turkson would be elected.

Which Cardinals are from Rome?

I think they’d go for one from a Diocese and not a Curialist, so which ones are from Rome but serve in an Archdiocese somewhere else?

I have to say I was shocked when I heard this, and even more so after I heard that after a few hours lighting struck St. Peter’s. That’s a ten on the wow factor.

I don’t think anyone will ever grant him the title, ‘the great’ as John Paul II no doubt will get, but he was still a good pope and will be missed.

My hunch is that someone in his mid fifties to early sixties will be elected, so they’ll have a longer reigning pontiff.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_living_cardinals here is a list of all the cardinals that are still alive.

Well, as I said previously either here or elsewhere, Tarcisio Bertone is who many believe to be Peter the Roman.

Two main points are:

I. His name is Tarcisio PIETRO Evasio Bertone. Pietro is the Italian for Peter.

II. He was born in ROMANO Canavese. This one is a long shot. Romano Canavese is just outside of Turin, in Piedmont. That is quite a ways away from Rome.

I feel that since Bertone already is surrounded with the Fatima message controversy and his involvement with the Vatileaks scandal, he is already a target for theorists to proclaim as Peter the Roman.

I don’t believe he is, nor do I believe Peter the Roman will be at all.

Sorry, but I’d like to give a firm “no” on Turkson. The Catholic church doesn’t need to spend the next 20 years warding off another round of apocalyptic conspiracy theorists.
There will be conspiracy theorys whoever the next Pope is

In addition to that, they generally don’t go for Secretaries of State. The Secretary of State typically espouses whatever the ideology of the Pope he worked under. The Cardinals naturally would have had things that they would like different from the previous Pope, and electing a Secretary of State wouldn’t bring the changes they’d like.

(Or at least that’s how it supposedly is. One could argue that Ratzinger was like John Paul II’s Secretary of State; and of course Pacelli was the Secretary of State, but perhaps those were extraordinary circumstances.)

So you’re right – it’s especially so with Bertone’s part in the Vatileaks mess.

Talking about this rare event in the Church… there was a caller who asked this question to Jimmy Akin in the 1st hour of Jan 8 Catholic Answers Live #5792. The caller asked what would happen if the pope is unable to fulfill his responsibilities due to physical limitation/illness.

Did anyone else wake up this morning and thought this was all just a dream?

Again, saddened by this, totally unexpected, I will pray for our Holy Pope. It’s been in my thoughts constantly since hearing about it. He will be missed. Watched a highlight show, forget some now, believe he went to Cuba.

It’s more from the unmoderated comment sections than the news itself.
You’re right. It just saddens me that there are so many people out there on the internet who seem to hate our Holy Father.

Today Pope Benedict XVI displayed the qualities of an excellent leader and a true man of God by putting the interests of the Vatican and the Catholic Church over his own papacy. Since becoming Pope in 2005, Pope Benedict XVI has served the Church honorably, particularly through his work promoting charity across the globe. I wish him well in the future and, as a Catholic, I thank him for his service to God and the Church. I also look with optimism toward the future of the Catholic Church as it prepares to welcome a new leader and as it continues to spread God’s message of faith, hope and love to all the corners of the world.

The prophecy refers to Peter of Rome. I think Cardinal Turkson would actually be less likely to take the name of Peter than the other candidates because it’s already his first name, Plus, he’s from Ghana, not Rome. In order to tie him to the prophecy, they’d have to do some mental gymnastics to tie “Peter” and “from Rome” simultaneously.
For those that want to twist, there is always some way to do so. That is the nature of such predictions. Now if they would have nailed this resignation specifically, then we might take a look. This will go the way of the Mayan hoopla soon enough.

Agreed, I think that people forget all too soon just how many of these predictions FAIL. Even the ones that may seem to have been fulfilled are usually a big stretch to make them match the event.

Anyway, all the best to Pope Benedict. I think he has made a courageous decision that he hopes will be to the betterment of his church.

John

I’ve read the prophecies of St. Malachy and for each Pope he prophecied something about them. Each of those individual one’s are not compelling in and of itself but when you look at the whole of the prophecies, it does make it very compelling.

Of course if there is one thing that unites liberal and conservative Catholics alike its the repudiation of apoclyptic prophecies. BTW, LaSalette is approved and our Current Pope as a Cardinal, approved of Akita and they get quite apoclyptic.
