Pope Bluntly Faults Church's Focus on Gays and Abortion

I think our Pope is a genius at evangelizing. By making an ambiguous statement in an interview, he appears to give the liberal activists what they want without actually giving it to them (since an interview doesn’t change any doctrines) thus taking some of the steam out of their anger for the Catholic Church while, at the same time, getting the average Joe on the street to ask “what is this Catholicism about?” because the subject came up on shows like David Letterman. Once someone starts to wonder what it’s about, and they start to look into the teachings, they are on the way to becoming Catholic.
The mental difficulty many are having with this can be summed up in a question: If one has seemingly received a get out of jail free card, why on earth should anyone care in the first place to “look into the teachings?” That is how modern Western thinking works.

So, can one become “obsessed” with the poor?
I can’t think of a reason one can’t become obsessed with the poor. Obsession by its nature is dangerous. But if we must obsess, let us fan out and obsess with equal fervor – each according to his or her passions and talents – to bring attention to all aspects of Christ’s message. Surely that can’t be distressing to any Catholic.

I think this is where we should be focusing…

“I see the church as a field hospital after battle,” Francis said. “It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars. You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else.”

This is the core of what he was saying.
You say that is the core. The media say something else is the core. Another set of Catholics say something totally different from both is the core. It feels like anyone’s guess at this point.

But he didn’t give them a “get out of jail free card”. He didn’t say anything like “homosexual behavior is no longer a sin” or “abortion is a right”. At most, all they have is an off-the-cuff statement that could be ambiguous. And it doesn’t change any doctrine. So, because it’s not a clear statement in favor of homosexual behavior, anyone who is interested in knowing will have to look into it more to see what the Church teaches about it. And it kind of makes it hard to take someone serious when they say that the Catholic Church hates “gays”.

I knew I smelled a rat when I saw the same thing on three different networks today. I could read between the lines and knew already what their agenda was. I could guess how they took it out of context and how they misquoted him.
I want to say thank you to all the other people who seek the truth and the ones that actually posted where to get the complete interview. I knew right where to come to find what was really happening. Thanks for caring, AMDG

This thread encapsulates so much. It’s an amazing discussion. I thank God for this forum for allowing such vigorous airing of so much!👍

Fair enough, at least in spirit…

However, if obsession is dangerous, then is it not equally dangerous to become obsessed with the poor? If I can become obsessed* with abortion, then surely somebody else can become obsessed with the poor. Then what? Give up? Take a breather? How long? What does it mean? Do we need Canons for this?

(*Disclaimer: I am not saying I subscribe to this logic at all, in any way, either as applying to abortion/homosex or the poor. I am simply trying to take to its logical end.)

The fact that Pope Francis’ interview has generated now 31 pages of comments within a few hours of publication shows what a disaster it was for the Church. If the Pope’s interview was so clear, so Biblical, so Catholic, then I suspect it would have barely generated 10 pages. Instead, the Pope went out of his way to make the NY Times/Media crowd - who will never darken a church door - feel good … with the Pope even saying that his own side, fighting the good fight on all the life issues, were instead “small minded” and were part of the Church’s problem. This is disastrous.

As I said, I pity and pray for the young faithful Catholic being ridiculed at his or her university today, with the NY Times’ reports thrown back in their face. They must feel utterly deserted by their chief pastor, who wanted instead the applause and plaudits of the liberal media.

I can see where this is going 😃

Who has given anyone a get out of jail free card? Who has even hinted that anyone but God Himself can offer such a thing?
I have never felt more demoralized and betrayed.

Pope Francis is saying to every devout Catholic who followed its moral teachings, and fought for them, that we are the enemy, and we need to “go away” because we are an embarrassment to him.

My father was worried when he found out Francis was a Jesuit, and his fears have been realized. Has there been any other order that have caused more problems for the Catholic Church than the Jesuits?

Now devout Catholics have nowhere to turn in our struggle against evil. Even our own Church is against us. It’s like the end of the world. I wish I had not lived to see these dark days.
Wow. I can’t understand why you feel this way. Our pope was elected by the Holy Spirit through the leaders of the Church. He is preaching Christ’s word. Why do you feel that the Church is against you?

Um…I think by the standard of two very top leaders of your religion?
I wasn’t asking by what standard of judgment I use. I was asking what standard of judgment YOU use.

You have no epistomological basis for your canon of morality. You’ve decided that homosexuality=ok and Catholic teaching=immoral and barbaric. You have no basis for this belief. It’s a subjective opinion.

You don’t want to pass judgment on sexual revolutionaries, because you feel that’s mean and that sexual revolutionaries honestly believe they’re loving people; but you (likely) pass judgment on the wealthy who honestly believe they’re helping the masses through laissez-faire Capitalism.

Morality isn’t decided based upon how the person feels. Both sexual revolutionaries and rich laissez-faire Capitalists honestly believe what they’re doing is moral and even helping society.

But the question isn’t about feelings. The question is about what’s truly right and wrong.
The pope doesn’t feel it’s good to judge people.
“Who am I to judge a gay person,” he said in July.
And Jesus doesn’t feel it’s good to judge people:
“Judge not, that you be not judged."
(Matthew 7:1)
Not quite. You’re taking the NYT spin on things. The NYT and MSNBC aren’t exactly the most trust-worthy source for reporting on religious issues, be it Catholic, Protestant, Islam, etc.

Rather than cherry pick the Pope’s and Jesus’ words from atheist/sexular sources, you should look to what the Pope and Jesus actually meant from their own sources. You wouldn’t use a Protestant source to reliably interpret Catholic teaching, for instance.

catholic.com/magazine/articles/judge-not

Here are a couple of infallible Bible passages about judging:

1 Cor. 6:2-18 “Do you not know that the Lord’s people will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, matters pertaining to this life!…Shun immorality”

John 7:24 "Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.”

Matt 3:7 “But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?’”

1 Cor 5:9-11 “Sexual Immorality Must Be Judged. I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral persons— 10 not at all meaning the immoral of this world, or the greedy and robbers, or idolaters, since you would then need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother or sister[c] who is sexually immoral or greedy, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or robber. Do not even eat with such a one.”

1 Cor 10:15 “I speak as to sensible people; judge for yourselves what I say.”
But, naturally, you have free will. And even though you are a follower of both Jesus and the Pope, you don’t have to feel and do the same as they do.
Actually, I do. But I use their own interpretations; I don’t use atheist/sexular or Protestant interpretations of the Pope’s or Jesus’ statements. I use the Churches own teachers to interpret the Churches own teachings.
But. If they teach “the full truth” and you don’t agree with what they are saying here about judgment and you say your perspective is still “right” because it’s what you yourself believe and feel to be true…is that not–gasp!–“moral relativism”?
I accept everything Jesus teaches, and Jesus protects the Church from officially teaching anything wrong, so I accept what the Church teaches.

I accept the Churches own interpreters to interpret the Churches own teachings, not atheists/sexularists to interpret the Churches teachings.

Yes, I know, and I agree, but this is not the point. The point is, that message is what was taken away from the interview, and the various presentations about it, by the vast majority of viewers, at least that we can see in verifiable settings like comments and stuff on websites.

So many things don’t matter. My understanding of this doesn’t matter, yours doesn’t. We are a small portion of the world. What matters is the overwhelming public response.

So, yes, yes a million times, but these are two separate things, what the Pope said/meant and what the public is receiving/taking away from this. They are both important, but for different reasons and in vastly different ways.

I know I certainly can’t “blame” the public.

Well its been a fun ride guys. I just joined the Church of I could care less. Enjoy your new pope.

But he hasn’t suggested that those fighting, for example, abortion “give up” or “take a breather.” Advocating for “balance” doesn’t equal advocating for an end to current efforts regarding this or any other topic.

Poor, dangerous Mother Teresa.

With all due respect, that’s already happening. There are already millions of Catholics devoting energy to the poor, to catechism, to music ministry, to working in slums, to education where there would otherwise be none…and on and on and on.

Of course I love everyone… I belive many people may be misguided, but that does not mean you don’t love them… and it certanly does not help my soul to keep anger, or hateful feelings towards anyone… George Bush included.
“Love everyone” does not equal “support every platform a liberal supports.”

For instance, do you love George Bush? What do you think of his support of the super rich? Speaking of which, do you love the super rich? Do you support them “ripping off the 99%” as MSNBC and NYT puts it?
teaching.

Who has given anyone a get out of jail free card? Who has even hinted that anyone but God Himself can offer such a thing?
I said “seemingly” for a very, very specific and important reason. It didn’t happen, and it can’t, but that illusion is, by far, the received interpretation of this, and that is what ultimately matters to the public, the received interpretation/takeaway.

…? We can start a spin-off thread for it somewhere else.
No, no, I like your line of argumentation very much. It’s just that it was too funny to think of the conclusion 🙂

P.S. Your signature image makes me miss him more 😦
