Pope Bluntly Faults Church's Focus on Gays and Abortion

The Holy Father did not say that he did not hate abortion. When I heard snippets from the priest who interviewed him, the main word I heard was “obsession”. Some people are simply obsessed with certain sins. For some, it may be the sin of war. For others, it may be the sin of abortion or the sin of environmental destruction.

It is much more in line with Jesus’ ministry to focus on loving one another, forgiving everyone, and serving those in need. If the Pope’s words change the image of our Church in the world to one of open arms instead of pointing fingers, he has performed a miracle.
I agree. I’m new to the Catholic faith. When I’ve turned on the local Catholic radio at various times and days during the last two weeks, every single time, there was someone on speaking about the evils on contraception and abortion. Every time - about fifteen times total. Invariably, I switched it off. The first time I had tuned in, there was a wonderful speaker, who was having a discussion about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, and how they all must be done and how they complement each other. For someone who is interested in the Catholic faith, it drew me in. It was something I wanted to know more about.

Everyone in the United States knows how Catholics feel about these topics. I do think that for some people, it has become an obsession, and they speak at such length on these topics that it drowns out the other messages of the Catholic Church. Had I not had family members who were Catholic, found my way to a loving parish, and stumbled onto interesting works online, I would have been driven off as I think many are.

It is important to stand firm in what you believe in and work for what is right. But I think when those convictions become and obsession and your sole message, it harms the church and its attempts to evangelize.

I was wondering when the moneychangers would be yanked into the conversation! It’s the Catholic equivalent of Godwin’s Law around here. I don’t see how it’s a relevant example regarding this conversation?

First, welcome! Second, we *can *trust the Chair of Peter to teach the truth – absolutely nothing about the pope’s comments indicates otherwise. Unless, of course, we only want a portion of the truth to be highlighted.

He is not John Paul II or Benedict – he is Francis, and he was called to be pope by the Holy Spirit, just as his predecessors were. I’ve stated this before in this thread but it bears repeating: I cannot fathom how folks feel abandoned by our Holy Father because of this interview. I guess I need clarification.

You’re relatively new here so I’m going to gently remind you that focusing on one another and not the thread’s subject is verboten around here. None of us has the gifts necessary to judge another’s Catholicity.

Again:  How has he stabbed his own followers in the back?
Please don’t lecture me on what is “verboten”. As a Catholic I have a right to defend the teachings of the Church. And when someone claims to be a Catholic and implies that you can believe in abortion, contraception, etc., and be a Catholic then that person needs to be disabused of their false and heretical rantings. We do have the “gifts necessary to judge another’s Catholicity”, it’s called Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium.

I have also seen how you have treated some of the faithful Catholics on this thread and you should be ashamed of yourself. Do not lecture me!

As Jesus said: “Though seeing, they do not see; though hearing, they do not hear or understand. In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving." --Matthew 13:13-14
So the media understands the Pope better than many who have been understood to be faithful Catholics, just last year under Pope Benedict .

That scripture verse does not apply at all to this case.

When Jesus spoke, he let people like the jews and sadducees of his time, leave empty handed, because he knew they laid traps. He told sinners, who were not penitent, things harder to hear, on divorce, the commandments, it left them leaving away sad.
Those sinners that rejoiced at what he said, repented and followed him, they didn’t rejoice at the words and continued sinning, and sending pro-abortion “Thank yous” on Facebook

In this case, this is more like Peter making mistakes in front of Paul in acts.
And the fire that was consuming you was the Church’s teaching on contraception, abortion and homosexual activity? The pope has reasserted the Church’s teachings on these issues. His point is that we should be on fire for living the Gospel of Jesus Christ, not reducing the Catholic Faith to merely condemning 3 sins.
When was the Church Faithful merely condemning 3 sins?? This is the first time I ever heard of that accusation, not to mention, most laity never hear about these sins in the pulpits, maybe from church bulletin blanket statements at best. There were millions of Catholics like me in America who never heard the difference between intrinsic evil and issues like the death enalty – that we could ignore some, and choose a favorite teaching. The faith has been nothing more of a cultural identification. Certainly not something you would die for literally. How can it be precious at all? If it was just something like citizenship or a club?
I never heard about contraception in its fullness or humanae vitae. I knew the Church disapproved maybe even acknowledged remotely they had their reasons, but I didn’t know really why. The only ones on a broad scale who have been reiterating Church teaching have been the secular media ironically.
Its because the church locally have not really gone out of their way to counter the media narrative because they’ve been either complicit WITH the culture or ignorant as the laity. The Apologetics phenomenon only occurred way after the sexual revolution so how can we blame them for responding to the culture after the consequential fruit have come to full bloom?? Now all of a sudden Catholics are chastizing Catholics who may not have been guilty of any wrong doing??? Fr Pavone was wrong?? Lila Rose was single minded??
Ok now this takes the cake. Again, the pope didn’t say anything against Church teaching. Homosexual acts, abortion and contraception are still sins. The pope’s point is that our Catholic Faith should not be reduced to merely condemning these three sins.
That’s not what I got from his point, his point was fairly innocuous but it was poorly said.

His answer about homosexuality was vague and he didn’t even answer his own question by the end of it. It gave no one a real answer. Any true secular homosexual on the outside, why should he be interested in God’s mercy, if there is no need to repent? The problem with his answer was it seemed as if the Pope wants to both talk to two sets of people at the same time!

yes it’s true that the faithful should always be reminded of the person hood when they treat them with Charity in trying to bringing them the truth; but the homosexual is left hanging on what the Catechism states outright, how would HE know??? So unknown to the secular homosexual who lauds the pope with glee; The pope omits his speech , with reticence and guardedness because many still don’t know it disapproves of the act, they just think it condemns the person themselves. His answer was awful. His statements as Bishop Bergoglio, for some reason are completely different than the tone he has now.

Of course the Pope hasn’t said anything literally against Church teaching. He’s the Pope!

It doesn’t mean the individual person is coming out confusing, because the man in whatever Jesuit capacity may be conflicting with the Pope with his presumption that he is still the casually circumspect priest from Buenos Aires.

It’s no different than when Pope Benedict would switch and publish a book under the name Ratzinger.
Yes they are sins, but when the people were ready to stone the woman found in adultery, Christ reached out to her and saved her from being stoned to death.
The problem with the Church is that it hasn’t been going out to stone the woman anymore in error.

It just tells the woman in adultery, "oh that’s nice! " Both her Catholic Mother, and her Catholic neighbors are interested in the baby shower because they don’t want to offend the person living in sin.

The Church majority hasn’t been guilty of overzealousness, they’ve been guilty of political correctness and false tolerance. We’ve been guilty of indifference and tepidity, especially among many local priests.
And those who are aware of , possibly not being complacent, are not out there with a stone, they are seeking answers and I wish the Pope would say Go and sin more! as Christ said, that there’s more to life than this world. Instead its been a bunch of incomplete answers, left unanswered and inexplicit.

This…just this kind of situation, is how I know I am not, nor ever have been Catholic. I will not take the time and intellectual energy to defend statements from my “religious betters” that are just simply wrong.

What’s the Pope advocating for homosexuals? Tolerance? Tolerance of what? Their sin? God doesn’t tolerate sin, should we? We’re not to tolerate it in ourselves, are we?

Abortion is a daily holocaust. Can we be too concerned?

Foolish, let’s just all get along words. Yes, homosexuality and abortion are sinful, but do we have to talk about it so much? We’re driving people away from the Church. Ridiculous.

You all work at it. Lend nuance and spiritual depth where there is none. You’re obligated to do so.

Me, not so much anymore. What a feeling of freedom in Christ!

What I find really confusing here is this claim of the Church’s focus on Gays and Abortion ? All evidence seems to indicate that we have lost are focus on these issues, and now have millions upon millions of Catholics the world over who now have no problem voting for politicians who thoroughly reject Catholic teaching in these matters. I’m just not seeing the Catholic Churches where these topics are an obsession. Not anywhere period.

You’re going to leave the Church because the Pope, speaking without infallibility, gave an innocuous interview? I’m sure you’ve seen that lot’s of us here actually disagree with the Holy Father on this one, but we aren’t spurning the Church because we aren’t enamored with this pontiff.

Well, isn’t the whole point that those inside should be better than those outside?

If you’re like them why have the Church – so you can feel excused?
The pope answered that plainly too. The church isn’t and can never be a place where only perfect people are allowed. It’s a place where wounded and repentant sinners are healed (a hospital for sinners, as he put it). It’s not that we’re “supposed to be better” it’s that we’ve admitted that we’re not and that that’s a problem. But a hospital is not good to an ill patient if he insists that he is not ill and refuses to submit to examination or treatment, eh?

LiberalPrincess,

Please do not call yourself a Catholic, you are not Catholic!

Are you kidding me really? You “know” what is in her heart? As Mr Bay has pointed out …well I guess you saw his post. Pope Francis is a wonderful spirit filled man. I am proud to have him as leader of our faith.

What a feeling of freedom in Christ!
The same Christ who said, *And he that taketh not up his cross, and followeth me, is not worthy of me. *?

Ah, but see you aren’t disagreeing with him are you? Not really. You’re simply saying “I’m scared that he speaks this way because it might lead to X, Y and/or Z.” You previously said that you were 100% in line with his actual message but expressed concern over what could be seen as a permissive tone.

The Holy Father has come to the realization that others will write whatever they will write. If you speak in ways that are unintelligible to the masses, then the filter will lie, attack and twist. So why not just speak bluntly?

Francis is extremely easy to understand, while B16 was more intellectual and difficult to decipher. There are no code words here. And that’s what’s scary! There’s no parsing. There’s no cached terms. It’s up front and blunt.

Why take this as a scary thing? Why take it as a threat for permissiveness? Why not take it as maybe he’s rallying the troops, the good soldiers and medics for Christ and telling them that they need to get in the battle with hearts filled of mercy and compassion instead of sitting on the sidelines bickering or marching onto the field with hearts of self-righteousness?

And in turn, do you respect those of us who (respecting him as the Pope) are not overjoyed with his papacy?

On the issue of abortion, there is the annual March for Life, and that is about it at a parish level.
Is that what the pope is being blunt against?

I notice that on internet discussions homosexuality gets a lot of bandwidth. It is usually in reaction to secular stories though, and not so much on the Church raising the issue. It was topical for the Church to issue a statement here and there as marriage laws were being defined, but by and large, the Church lost that fight.

As far as contraception goes, it is not even discussed much. Pope Paul VI made the doctrine, and it has been pretty much ignored by the vast majority of Catholics ever since.

I know that we are supposed to be feeling some old-fashioned Catholic guilt over our faults here, but I am a little bit befuddles as to why.
If we are to now feel less guilt about how we fall short on these things, and more guilt on focussing on how we have fallen short, for sure I can live with that, but that is something new for sure.

Please enlighten me! When have I treated faithful Catholics negatively on this thread?

And you don’t need me to tell you what’s forbidden here – read the forum rules.

That was actually a very well written piece. Extremely even-handed and pretty accurate. Francis wants a change in attitude, but no change in doctrine. That’s right on the money.

The fact that leftist groups are “giddy” about it and expect some kind of change is nothing that Francis can control. Perhaps some who hear what the Holy Father says will take it as an invitation to rediscover the Faith and turn away from what they embrace today. Maybe not. But it’s worth a shot. It’s worth “getting messy.”

The Bucket, I do maintain that the message makes sense, but we’re seeing the consequence for what has happened with the message, people will leave the Church, the SSPX’s pews will be a bit fuller this Sunday. Traditionalists (who have just as many rights in the Church as you) are feeling hurt and betrayed. This is a scary thing because the secular world now believes they have their Pope. To those who uphold Catholic truths, the secular world will say he is not your Pope, he is ours. They will say the Pope does not care about marriage or abortion. That is why some of us are scared.

I guess what it comes down to for me, is that in my years in the Church, I have seen these alleged obsessions thrown to the sideline in the name of “social justice.” So to hear the Pope say that those of us doing pro life work or working for traditional marriage are obsessed and promoting “insistent doctrines,” that is disturbing, when in fact the ones who are making it “tumble like a house of cards” are the dissidents.

I’d also like to add that the whole message that Francis is sending here is not new in the post Vatican II world. This whole idea that we ought not to correct error has seemingly led to a collapse in Church attendance, a world where the majority of American Catholics don’t believe in the real presence, and where Catholics think that Vatican II gave them a licence to follow their “conscience.”

We know what is in a person’s heart by what they say. LiberalPrincess wrote of pro-choice (pro-abortion) and pro-contraception Catholics. You can’t be either and be a Catholic. Her words told us what she believes and thus what is in her heart.
