Is there no one in the federal government even remotely familiar with subsidiarity? The federal government has no business funding local libraries etc…
Apparently you are not familiar with federal aid to the states which has been going on for some time now. This federal aid relieves the pressure on the state budget and allows states to earmark more money for local purposes such as state university libraries, etc.

BTW, what good ever came out of the Vietnam war? What a waste of young lives and taxpayer money?
The biggest crime about the Vietnam war was it was micromanaged by LBJ at the expense of our military. South Vietnam was controlled by Catholics. I think it was justifiable to defend South Vietnam from the communist invasion from the north.

while its great to defend a catholic area i don’t think we should justify war by saying we are defending fellow Catholics. to truely understand if a war is just i think we need to look at what will our military actions lead to, will they lead to more evil then already present. What will the death toll possibly be like, and so on and so forth. I really don’t think many wars can be justified.

just remember this almost all war leads to more war the idea that war can lead to peace is a crazy and absurd statement if we continue to be involved with military conflicts and wars they will never never end we need to start moving to a much less interventionist policy and look to resolve our differences peacefully instead of violently.

yes i believe almost no war is justifiable meaning that i will hold a position that war should be avoided at all cost and should only be used in extreme circumstances, mainly a very very very great evil that can only be stopped through military action or in terms of self defense. IDK about you but no country has the military might or even the courage or guts what ever you want to call it to attack our country in ways that would threaten national security in a way that we would have to go to war with them.

I’m familiar with it, and it’s contrary to the principle of subsidiarity which is part of Church teaching.

Thank God that the pope is making a stand here!
I’m not sure we should attach too much weight to the prayer that Pope Benedict offered. The Reuters article seemed to make it larger than it was.

After praying the Angelus with the faithful in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, 27 March, the Holy Father made an ppeal for peace on behalf of the people of Libya. Here is the statement in its entirety.
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
In the face of the ever more dramatic news that is arriving from Libya, I feel increasing anxiety for the safety and security of the civil population and apprehension on account of the escalation of events now marked by the use of weapons. In moments of greater tension it becomes urgently necessary, in the search for peaceful and permanent solutions, to have recourse to every means available to diplomatic action and to support even the weakest signs of openness and of the desire for reconciliation among all the parties involved.
In this perspective, as I raise my prayers to the Lord for a return to harmony in Libya and in the entire North African region, I address a heartfelt appeal to the international organizations and to all who have political and military responsibilities to initiate a dialogue immediately and to suspend the use of weapons.

It seems Pope Benedict is urging diplomacy to minimize bloodshed and the suffering of civilians. He did call for immediate discussions, but I am not sure that Gaddafi has much interest in leaving Libya, and I don’t think the sides opposing him will settle for anything less. However, I expect back channel communications exist so when Gaddhafi is ready to leave, a path will be made for him.

Because all progressives like Obama are hypocrites. If you remember, Clinton bombed Serbia for no good reason too. Progressives love to get into wars without national interest in mind or justice.
With all due respect, blanket statements such as these are ridiculous and silly.

glad to see the pope came out on this topic hopefully the catholic faithful will see eye to eye with him on this view
"Military intervention in Libya, in the judgment of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), ‘appears to meet’ the just-cause criterion of Catholic teaching on just war. The USCCB, however, cautioned that it has ‘refrained from making definitive judgments’ in light of ‘many prudential decisions beyond our expertise.’”

Kind of a wishy-washy statement IMHO. And evidently the USCCB does not see eye-to-eye with Pope Benedict.

in this matter it doesn’t matter what the USCCB says

the pope made a statement on it

the popes statement in the eyes of the church trumps USCCBs statement

also USCCB statement isn’t binding we don’t have to agree with what they state.

The pope different story.

The Pope did not make an ex cathedra statement. He is not infallible.

It does matter what the USCCB states because the faithful in the U.S. pay attention to what it states. I’m not saying I agree with its statement; I only reported it. (And I called it wishy-washy, anyway. :p)

you are correct on infallible well it not being be and I know you did

I just think its a good idea to do what the pope suggests even if its not infallible.

Thank you. You said that you think, not what the faithful are required to do. I haven’t even stated my opinion on this war or on Pope Benedict’s statement.

Shooting the messenger is way too common.

your right, but I hold to the view that we should stay out of Libya it pus the civilians at risk and we shouldn’t do that only if it is absolutely necessary.

I don;t think that it is true that Catholics have to obey only ex cathedra infallible papal statements. When a Pope speaks on faith and morals, Catholics are bound to give obedience and assent.

Would you please back your assertion up with Church documentation? I’m asking for this because I honestly don’t know. I always bow to the authority of the Magisterium, but I’m not sure that this statement from Pope Benedict is a matter of faith and morals or that we must accept absolutely everything he states re faith and morals.

Thank you.

That is my reading of it. However, I don’t think any side (Gaddafi, the rebels, the Western led alliance) are ready to do that. Unless all three sides are willing to abide by a ceasefire, it isn’t possible.

Although the Pope has moral suasion with Western nations, I don’t think Gaddafi or the rebels are particularly moved by his requests if it involves sacrifice on their part.

The best we can do at this point is pray for a speedy end to hostilities and for a lasting peace which will promote the welfare of the Libyan people.

See Vatican Code of Canon Law:
Can. 752 Although not an assent of faith, a religious submission of the intellect and will must be given to a doctrine which the Supreme Pontiff or the college of bishops declares concerning faith or morals when they exercise the authentic magisterium, even if they do not intend to proclaim it by definitive act; therefore, the Christian faithful are to take care to avoid those things which do not agree with it.
Can. 753 Although the bishops who are in communion with the head and members of the college, whether individually or joined together in conferences of bishops or in particular councils, do not possess infallibility in teaching, they are authentic teachers and instructors of the faith for the Christian faithful entrusted to their care; the Christian faithful are bound to adhere with religious submission of mind to the authentic magisterium of their bishops.

Before I check your links I would like you to answer a question, please. What is the Magisterium? And I don’t mean an answer like “the teaching authority of the Church.” That doesn’t answer my question. Who composes the Magisterium? The bishops with the Pope? Then the bishops in the USCCB who state that the present war in Libya is just are kinda disagreeing with the Pope. Yet if they are part of the Magisterium we must obey them. And we must obey the Pope. So we can’t win.

Nobody else that I have asked has been able to tell me exactly what the Magisterium is composed of and how its rulings are formed. Not one. It would be very helpful if you could tell me and I would appreciate it very much. Because right now I’m one confused Catholic.

Thanks.
