Pope condemns abortion as product of 'throwaway culture'

I’m so confused, I thought he said we weren’t supposed to be talking about abortion so much?

He didn’t say that. Search in vain, you will never find it.

He said it needs to be discussed in the proper context and venue. Too many times we are simply swatting flies, reacting to provocations.

Ok, I have to say that I’m encouraged by the fact that this story is starting to get around the media quite a bit. There are now articles on the Pope “blasting abortion” on HuffPo, CBS, Washington Times, and a number of others. Haven’t seen it on Yahoo or NY Times, but I will admit this (positive) story is getting much more attention than I would have thought. I thought it would be totally ignored by the media in order to further their aims.

I really don’t see any good coming from this series of interviews. They have sown confusion amongst the faithful and those who reject Church teaching.

Right, but they are looking in specifically because they were told the Pope said homosexuality and abortion are ok now, or are no big deal, or whatever.

I would imagine most of these people will fall into one of two catagories. They will either be reaffirmed in their sins and behave as if the Church really had changed it’s teachings (which is bad). Or, they will look into the Church only to see that the teachings haven’t changed and will resent it (which is also bad).

If the Pope has to sort of, kind of, mislead people in order to get them to look into the Church, that’s not a good sign. We have the Truth of Christ, we don’t need to play games, we just need to proclaim the Truth.

People hear what they want to hear, after time though the truth is revealed. If millions heard that yesterday it will be days or weeks not months before they realize they heard wrong. IMO

Nope, even Pope Benedict XVI’s words are still being misinterpreted to this day.

I hope you are right. I wonder, though. If they rejected the teaching before, I suspect that they will continue to do so.

And they feel unworthy to try because why?

Because they are gay and in a “marriage” with another person of the same sex? How will they react when told that, no, the Church has not changed Her teaching that you are not married and need to live a chaste life? How are they responding to that teaching now?

Because they support abortion and reject any attempt to make abortion illegal? Why will they feel welcomed when confronted with the reality that their immoral view is NOT accepted by the Church?

I believe that many will get their hopes up that the Church is changing and willing to accept their actions when, in reality, as you note, church doctrines have not changed. How do we explain that to them?
