Pope, Curia to discuss reconciliation with SSPX

Though I hope beyond hope recociliation happens, I am cautiously optimistic about it. The longer the SSPX is apart from Rome, the more radical they become in their views about the post-Vatican II Church, and the more difficult or less likely reconciliation will become. In short I feel the window of opportunity is fast closing.

I attend SSPX masses, and have for the past 6 months, although I have not yet taken vows to enter the 3rd order. For the past several years after I converted to the faith at the age of 20 I have been a very active member of a diocesan parish until I happened upon the latin mass and the traditionalist movement.

I am also caustiously optimistic about this possible “reunion” although there are many varrying opinions of whether or not the SSPX is schismatic. I was listening to a radio show where the priest “expert” stated that excommunication means that the Holy See has said “you no longer believe what we believe.” I find this an ironic choice of words since Rome no longer believes much of what it used to believe and it has ditched the beauty and wisdom of it’s past teachings. If being schismatic means not belonging to two or three Vatican administrations that border on heresy, then so-be-it. Isn’t truth and faith more importance than obedience? Let us not forget that Hitler had inherited a very admired post as well. Does that mean that all of his followers were free of guilt for the crimes committed against the Jews than todays pseudo-catholics are for their offenses against the Eucharist, charity, and piety?

Let’s hope it means that the SSPX will return to Holy Mother Church.

Which church? I am reminded of the Watchtower Society which runs the Jehovah’s Witnesses. During WWII they were recommending celebrating holidays and now they are condemed. In the “holy mother church” things that stood for centuries (the mass, meaning of sacraments, purpose of the priesthood, reverence for the sacrifice of the Holy Eucharist) are no longer. If the SSPX “rejoins” the church what is to say that our minds must not be changed again at the whim of a new generation of Bishops? What purpose is doctrine if it is written in pencil?

“We believe what you believed. If you were right then, we are right now. If we are wrong now, you were wrong then.”

I hope the SSPX does return to the fold. I would love to be able to participate in such a traditional parish and have one within walking distance from my home. As long as they are not in full communion, however, they are not an option for me.

The news also gives me much higher hopes than I would have previously had about reconciliation. I’ve also heard murmurs in the blog world that the SSPX is also meeting to discuss reunion, although Bp. Williamson is just as staunchly against it as always. These conferences on both sides could bring about significant progress in healing the wound of schism.

I hope this happens. Sadly, misunderstandings and stubborness seem too often the reason no progress is ever made.

Weirdly enough. I look at this as akin to the Protestants but different. The Protestants said that Rome was intereperting Scripture wrong. The SSPX is saying that the Church was interperting Tradition wrong. Once again it comes down to who interperts?

Despite its often radical views the SSPX must be given its due for maintaining and persisting in the traditional Catholic faith and the pre 1962 latin mass in particular - during a troubled 40 years since the V2. Its own fervent adherents who are basically just honest devoted Catholics - they should never be seen as some sort of lunatic cult as some seek unfortunately to paint them as - and the growth of parishes which offer the traditional mass under the Ecclesiae Dei indult are testament to the SSPX’s persistence.

So it is very welcome that the Holy Father is reportedly working through how to reconcile the SSPX back into a regular relationship with the Church. I am sure the SSPX will not agree to do so without clear understandings which would include removal of the excommunication of the four bishops, wide provision for the traditional latin mass and a form of autonomy under which the SSPX “chapels” can be regarded as proper parishes in their right continuing to provide not just the traditional latin mass but the full life of traditional sacraments, devotions and practices and fully orthodox Catholic teaching. If that can all be agreed - and we should all be praying hard for that outcome - then the Church will be much richer for it and while it is unlikely ever tobecome the mainstream of the Church will enable the spiritual lives of so many more Catholics to be enhanced.

Well, you people can have your Vagina Monologues, you can have your priests masturbating with young boys, you can have your homosexual priest perverts, and you can have your dancing girls at “Mass”, you can have your clown Masses, you can have your profane folk and rock Masses and hand clapping. I hope you enjoy them I will take my Latin Mass, I will take my Gregorian chant and my rosary, I will take my Catholic religion at full strength, and I will take my excommunication at SSPX.

My, what a Christ-centered way to introduce yourself since I see this is your first post.

I deplore all of those things you mention, as do most of us Catholics here at CAF, it seems.

The difference is we’re willing to strive to change such things within the Church, rather than pulling a Martin Luther and splitting the Church.

Many of us here are praying for this reconcilliation. The Catholic Church needs strong groups like the SSPX within her.

I don’t think that you have p(name removed by moderator)ointed the difference. The real difference is that you people are blind to the fact that it was Vatican II which opened up the Church to these abuses, and that it was wrong to excommunicate people who were trying to keep to the true Catholic faith as it was practiced for years and years before Vatican II came along and nearly destroyed the Catholic Church. Your only answer was to excommunicate and condemn people who want to pray the Latin Mass and the rosary at SSPX.
Anyway, I wish everyone well, and I hope you will all enjoy the latest showing of the Vagina Monologues on St. Valentine’s day at your local Catholic college. By the way, how many Catholics these days are attending Mass or observing the regulations regarding artificial birth control? I see that most Catholics go to Holy Communion anyway, but few are at confession? I guess that you are all Saints, so good for you and your clown Masses. I hope that you enjoy all these great changes and you feel good about yourself and find that you have no need of confession before Holy Communion. Good luck from your excommunicated SSPX friend.

You know, I can’t say that I am for all the new age, modernist stuff that you list, but I find your vitriol revolting. If being Catholic means being like you, I’d rather sing Kum Bah Yah at an outdoor guitar Mass for lesbians trapped in men’s bodies.

Exactly, and the entire Catholic Chruch and the faithful will benefit. I have often attended SSPX masses and they are devout and holy, but I do not share the extreme views of our friend who wants to snub his nose at everyone by remaining pigheadedly outside the embrace of the broader church.

I hope you enjoy singing Kum Bah Yah at your outdoor guitar “Mass” for lesbians. By the way, will this be before or after you have enjoyed the latest showing of the Vagina Monologues at your local Catholic college? And don’t worry about confession, because I know you are all Saints.
Good luck from your excommunicated friend at SSPX.

Right we are all pigheads, because we like the Gregorian chant and our Rosary at SSPX. Sorry, but that’s how it was before the mess you have got yourself into with Vatican II.

and I most sincerely hope that it never comes to light that one of your beloved SSPX priests has abused anyone - little boy or little girl, teenage boy or teenage girl, or adult man or woman. I suspect your vaunted faith just might come crashing down.

Thank you very much. And I hope that you are feeling good about yourself and that you are feeling good about all the wonderful changes to the Catholic Church since Vatican II. Good luck.
