Oh, Marcion, of the 2nd century. He was quite the character. But he didn’t really put “Luke and Paul together.” Because he wanted to portray God as being only “love” he argued to dismiss the Old Testament entirely and wanted the only ‘scripture’ to be the writings of Paul which dealt with ‘law and faith’, and a very truncated version of Luke.

Actually, he was probably the first Scripture “Cherry Picker” of note.

And thankfully he is long gone. He was just one of those who want to make God in ‘his’ image and likeness.

cool. you know your history too. i will have a lot of good times with you.

i question, if james was jesus’s brother, why would he have told john to watch his mother from the cross? it is the tradition of the time to have a son watch the parenr, not a person from outside the family.
Who are you talking to? This is a clear reason why Jesus did not have a brother…

Nicea was very good. we can thank marchion for that. if he did not put luke and pauls writings together. we would never have had the bible that we know till much latter, he was branded a herotic, because he rejected all other writers. that was eher they came up with the laws regarding the NT.
"Those therefore who after the manner of wicked heretics dare to set aside Ecclesiastical Traditions, and to invent any kind of novelty, or to reject any of those things entrusted to the Church, or who wrongfully and outrageously devise the destruction of any of those Traditions enshrined in the Catholic Church, are to be punished thus:

IF THEY ARE BISHOPS, WE ORDER THEM TO BE DEPOSED;
BUT IF THEY ARE MONKS OR LAY PERSONS, WE COMMAND
THEM TO BE EXCLUDED FROM THE COMMUNITY."

-----------Second Council of Nicaea 787 A.D.

That’s a another way of saying… I’m sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. (Mark Chapter 4)
Well, some of us perceive it more as seeds of dissention and rebellion. However that may be, proselytizing is not permited at CAF.

I went to Mount Alvernia for grammer school. Catholic Memerial, for high school. Notre Dame for college.
i had the franciscians for grades 1 thru 8. grades 9-12, the jesuits. and college the jesuits. 8 + 4+ 4 = 16
Here’s why I don’t believe you’re shooting straight with us. I’m AT Notre Dame. ND is run by Holy Cross priests, not Jesuits – and they’re very quick to remind you of that.

Perhaps you went to Georgetown?

God Bless,
RyanL

when i was there in 74, there was 2 jesuits on loan from boston college.

How do you know it was John?

am i mistaken or did one of the gospels say that?
The Word does not say it was John. I have no problem with being corrected but I’d like to see the verse if I’m wrong. I believe it is RCC tradition that says it was John.

I strongly suggest you prove purgatory before preaching it.
Purgatory
Mt 5:48 - be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect
Heb 12:14 - strive for that holiness without which cannot see God
Jam 3:2 - we all fall short in many respects
Rev 21:27 - nothing unclean shall enter heaven
1Jn 5:16-17 - degrees of sins distinguished
Jam 1:14-15 - when sin reaches maturity gives birth to death
2Sam 12:13-14 - David, though forgiven, still punished for his sin
Mt 5:26 - you will not be released until paid last penny
Mt 12:32 - sin against Holy Spirit unforgiven in this age or next
Mt 12:36 - account for every idle word on judgment day
2Macc 12:44-46 - atoned for dead to free them from sin
1Cor 3:15 - suffer loss, but saved as through fire
1Pet 3:18-20; 4:6 - Jesus preached to spirits in prison
2Tim 1:16-18 - Paul prays for dead friend Onesiphorus
1Cor 15:29-30 - Paul mentions people baptizing for the dead

john 19 verse 27. he said to mary. woman behold thy son. that is why i question if james was really jesus’s brother, as some say.

I’m slightly skeptical, lavazza. Even in casual, late night ‘internet’ conversation, for you to skip by the Holy Cross priests whom you must have had for the majority of your course work and to say you were taught by ‘jesuits’ for college. . .well, it is almost unbelievably careless. I cannot, for example, imagine saying that my college priests were jesuits if all but 'one or two on loan from BC–?? " were something entirely different. Might we ask what your degree was?

Let’s just take one verse. The first verse has nothing to do with Purgatory.

Mt 5:48 - be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect

Mat 5:44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Mat 5:45
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Mat 5:46
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Mat 5:47
And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?

Mat 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Here’s the second verse. Again, no purgatory. Heb 12:14 - strive for that holiness without which cannot see God

Hbr 12:14
Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Third, “Jam 3:2 - we all fall short in many respects” (!!!)

Jam 3:1
My brethren, be not many masters, **knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
**
Jam 3:2
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same [is] a perfect man, [and] able also to bridle the whole body.

Business, i only had ! H.C prof. went on to open my own restaurant, coming from boston and having the choice of B.C. or Dame, I was suprised to find out about the jesuits. that is why i say that.

The Word does not say it was John. I have no problem with being corrected but I’d like to see the verse if I’m wrong. I believe it is RCC tradition that says it was John.
And it really does not matter-the point was Jesus was giving the care of his Mother to someone who was not realted to her. If the “John” with her was her son then there owuld have been no need for him to do this and if she had other sons there would be no need to do this.

Of course had she not remained a Virgin it would have been a sacrilege of the higest order-on par with the desecration of the Holy of Holies whne the Romans destoryed the Temple.

Let’s just take one verse. The first verse has nothing to do with Purgatory.

Mt 5:48 - be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect .
Are you a perfect being now, as perfect as the Father is?

If you achieve Salvation, will you be perfect in Heaven?

john 19 verse 27. he said to mary. woman behold thy son. that is why i question if james was really jesus’s brother, as some say.
No James was not Jesus’ biological brother, or even a half brother.

That was clear in Paul’s writings

Galatians 1:18-19
18Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to confer with Cephas and remained with him for fifteen days.
19 But I did not see any other of the Apostles, except for James the brother of the Lord.
Paul says he saw “James, the Brother of the Lord”

Well there were only 2 Apostles named ‘James’, James the son of Alpheus and James the son of Zebedee.

Now James the Son of Zebedee was killed prior in Acts 12, so the only Apostle named ‘James’ that Paul could have seen was James the son of Alpheus. That is the James who was bishop of Jerusalem.

So yes, James IS the brother of the Lord, just as we all are. But he wasn’t a biological sibling.
