Pope expresses shame for Christian violence in history

Pope Benedict, leading a global inter-religious meeting, acknowledged on Thursday “with great shame” that Christianity had used force in its long history but said violence in God’s name had no place in the world today.

Good for the Holy Father. I just wished that this would have happend sooner. Blessed JP II did all that he could do, I am glad that the Holy Father is following in the footsteps of a great man and saint.

Just the other day on Youtube someone was complaining about all of the things that the Church has done in the past that were bad. I told them that the Church has apologized for those things many times. They seemed to think that wasn’t enough. All well, some people are just outright hateful.

What revealing about those types is when you ask them how that compares to all the good things done by the Church.

And how the good and bad things compare with other major religions of today, rather than just focusing on yesteryear.

Just be ready for crickets:thumbsup:

Now if only people could possibly understand what he actually said.

Unfortunately, you usually find people misunderstanding.

“See, the Pope admits that the Church was wrong! Therefore, you Catholics aren’t infallible, therefore, protestants were right.”

or:
“See, I told you religion leads to violence”.

But what the Pope said was that Christians --individual Christians, sometimes acting in large groups–can misunderstand and do wrong. Sometimes they do it knowingly, sometimes not. But it isn’t “The Church” that is either doing the wrong or TEACHING the wrong. As the Pope notes, when we as individuals (or as a group) resort to violence, we are rejecting what our Church has consistently and correctly taught as the Word of God. As fallible human beings, we can (with shame) acknowledge our individual or even group guilt in failing to actually DO what our Faith teaches, or failing to correctly understand our faith.

But we don’t apologize for the faith itself as if Catholicism had been wrong. It hasn’t been.
 
And those individuals have included a few Popes, including a couple that led their own troops into battle.
 
Nonsense, many of these atrocities were ordered by the church leadership.

You cant whitewash history.

Actually, in my experience (not everybody, of cpurse) many of these people will not really be “satisfied” until the CC basically is destroyed and/or (“next best thing”) allows women priests, abortion, and gay marriage.
Yep, we are in the last days, people.:rolleyes:
 
I don’t understand why some feel like they need to apologize for the Cursades. If it wasn’t for the first three Crusades all of Europe would be under Sharia law right now, and America probably wouldn’t exist as it does today.

But yeah I really like this pope and I’m protestant.
