Bad relative to what? Moral relativists with a poor understanding of history and geography have no valid opinion on this. The problem is that the people who argue this are either intellectually deficient, ignorant or intellectually dishonest and so arguing with them is pointless. It’s like arguing with a smart mouthed 8 year old over anything.

What some people in the Church need to recognize is that these so-called “bad things of the Catholic Church” are lies. To “apologize” for something which has at times been considered a good thing for a period of years before it was transformed into “bad things” is just utterly wrong. The Church did not have to apologize for the Crusades, not even the fourth Crusade, that was something the Venetian government was suppose to do. But they’re gone, so no one can say “I’m sorry”. And we have many other things we don’t need to apologize for either, but we did because people are ignorant.

We need our apologists back. The Church has to fund for apologists.

I agree. But by portraying Luther in a “positive” light for Lutherans, many might want to find out more about the Church and what it really believes and stuff like that. Positive portrayals of Luther and Lutheranism through ecumenical dialogue with stuff like the JDDJ helped me find out the Catholic Church is the true church. Just saying.
 
Although I can see the points others are making, I tend to lean towards MontChevalier’s and PA560’s line of thinking. Apologizing for violent acts of past saints in defense of the Faith and talking positively about the heretic Luther concerns me.
 
What is Right is always Right, what is Wrong is always Wrong. They don’t change; our understanding of them does. Something that a Catholic, or anyone else, thought was the Right thing to do in the past could very well have been Wrong (shown to be Wrong through our further understanding of Right and Wrong). To proclaim that people have done Wrong in the name of Christ (even those who thought they were doing Right) is not a betrayel of Christianity or Christians or saints of the past.
