Pope Francis condemns legalization of marijuana, says it won't produce good results

I read about this on MSN. In the comments, I think there was one person agreeing, and everyone else attacking the pope, although mostly attacking the Catholic Church and religion in general. Why do a bunch of pot heads care so much about what the pope says? Not like they ever listen to him, anyway. 🤷
I’ve seen comment sections like that on other news sites too. It seems as soon as an article appears about the Pope or Catholic church they all come out to attack.

I agree with Pope Francis. I am against the legalization of recreational marijuana. I am for the legalization of medical marijuana though.

The first miracle Jesus did was to create an intoxicating substance. Do you really think He thought no one was going to deliberately intoxicated, or “make their heart merry.” In the old testament there were feasts where strong liquor was an important part of the feast. Also see Titus-1:15, 1 Cor-6-12. If the pope is for stopping deliberate intoxication, would not his words apply to alcohol, and we all know how well prohibition worked. I think there are those who use recreational drugs all the time and do not commit crimes and function in society quite well, just like many Catholic drinkers. No man should have the right to tell another what he may or may not put in his own body. If someone commits a crime to obtain drugs, punish him for the crime. Otherwise, it is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

Seems a little bit late, IMO. But who knows?
I wouldn’t be surprised to see the laws legalizing recreational use of marijuana overturned by popular vote in time. People use drugs recreationally as self-medication, an escape from reality. This affects others negatively - on the road for example. We already have negative social issues with alcohol abuse; we’re just adding to them. And I do think the effects of marijuana on the brain should be a public health concern. It seems to induce apathy and disengagement. The effects last longer than the effects of alcohol. I mean, is cocaine or maybe speed next? (We’re responsible adults, right? ;))

If it promotes a sense of peace and love, like my medical marijuana does in me, I think it should be legal.

LOVE! ❤️

“Reality doesn’t impress me. I only believe in intoxication, in ecstasy, and when ordinary life shackles me, I escape, one way or another. No more walls.”
― Anaïs Nin,

And we are all in this together, and responsible for the wanton self destructive behavior as indicative above. As to the result of the issues being dealt with, thats a “different” story.

This story results in respiratory issues, cancer and so forth, and the above social attitude which leads to the different story.

Dude, I think that’s called being stoned.
I never intentionally get wasted, but smoke just enough to get properly medicated. Yet I often feel a sense of love and peace. My intellect seems to be intact, and I often feel in communion with God.

LOVE! ❤️

If you willingly smoke pot, then your are intentionally getting wasted.

Do you feel communion with God only when you smoke pot? If so, don’t you think that you are kidding yourself?

Are you suggesting that a person cannot be in communion with God if they smoke pot?

Please define what you mean by ‘wasted.’ Are you suggesting that any amount of pot will cause a person to be wasted?

LOVE! ❤️

It does specify “recreational” and not medicinal.
Are beer and wine considered to be recreational drugs in some sense? Alcohol can be a drug of sorts and people can use it for recreation.

👍

I am very glad he said this. He is right. I work part time as a nurse in a neurology floor and I have seen enough horrible nerve and brain disorders brought on by marijuana and other drugs.

Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit.
Thankyou so much for speaking up with expert witness to its effects. When my son was taken to the psych hosp. admission by ambulance one night for suicide watch… the first question I was asked was does he smoke marijuana. It is the most horrible drug of all because of the lie it perpetrates. It comes across to me in a way I imagine anti Christ will come. The wolf in sheeps clothing.

I’ve been attending a drug help centre on a 12 session program for ‘significant others’ in relation to my sons marijuana use and how it daily affects his life and by extension, the rest of the family. It is a slowly eroding scourge on his person, his spirit and his health… and our finances!

Your illusion of wellbeing and communion with God is no different from any of the millions of drug users on the planet, Robert. You are buying and dying by the lie.

I saw a video of mental health specialists who said the exact same thing; when parents bring in their teens or young adults with behavior problems, the first thing they ask is “do you smoke pot?” I agree that the lie that is perpetuated about pot being no big deal is doing a horrible dis-service to many people with mental health issues that will never receive the real help that they need. It is a shame that so many people will tolerate the concept of a person turning themselves into a vegetable because of this mis-guided idea that its only a little pot.

Seeing that the Church has always taught that true union and communion with God is an act of the intellect, I find it pathetically amusing that you would suggest that a person whose reason and intellectual determination that is under the influence of pot could reach some sort of communion with God unobtainable while completely sober.

You are only kidding yourself.

Would you say the same is true for caffeine? Yes, here too I feel communion with God, an increased communion at that! Many monks cultivate it! Just because it’s a drug, does not mean it’s harmful to one’s spirituality.

LOVE! ❤️

Robert, seeking ‘transcendence’ through the use of artificial stimulants is a throw back to pagan hedonism and nothing more than self gratification and self indulgence.

God is evidenced to us in the things of this world that are beautiful to us but none of the Christian mystics used pleasure inducing substances or experiences in the way you are proposing. All, without exception, met with Christ through their suffering, fasting, abstinence and self denial. Suffering is a hallmark of Christian mysticism.

I totally agree but this makes not only us here in the USA more secular, and instead of us saying yes that’s bad, were just going to say, oh well it’s ok.

What about chocolate, Robert? Am I experiencing communion with God every time I scarf down a box of Sno-Caps? :roll eyes:

If you truly believe what you say here then I have even more compassion for you. I hope that some day you can truly find peace of mind.

Why do monks cultivate caffeine then? Are you suggesting that a monk becomes a pagan whenever he drinks coffee?

Monks who drink coffee do not also suffer and sacrifice to please God?

LOVE! ❤️

PS Do you have a source that says that Mystics of the Church never drank coffee?

Also note that I never said that I smoke medical marijuana in order to achieve a mystical state.
