That’s highly unusual. TED asks all speakers to keep their talks to 18 minutes or less.
I wondered what the guidelines were.

The one I listened to was two years ago or more. I don’t even remember what it was about now but it was longer than 18 minutes.

It sounds like you are saying you are only interested in listening what Pope Francis says if it confirms your own beliefs (my apologies if I am wrong here).
For some, the Magisterium of the Republican Party takes precedence over the Catholic Magisterium :p. Not naming names…just noting a trend.

No that is not what I am saying. Yes you are wrong.

I think his point was that Catholics don’t have to follow politicians.
They can follow Christ and use their own initiative.
Let’s not turn this into a political debate. 😦

My apologies. I only asked because your first few posts to the thread asking about content and trying to separate “theological” issues from “global warming” gave a distinct impression you were interested in a talk about one and not the other.

I’m 65. I have heard enough about global warming and climate change in my lifetime
thank you.

My point is more that the Holy Father issued an encyclical, the highest level of papal magisterial teaching (short of defining a dogma), that was all about our absolute moral imperative to do in all in our power to care for the environment. I’ve seen too many Catholics make excuses to completely ignore this encyclical. Its one thing to ignore comments he makes off the cuff day-to-day - some such comments have made me uncomfortable as well… but the environmental stuff? He explicitly added it to the Church’s body of magisterial teaching.

I think God expected mankind to care for the planet. To do otherwise is folly. Have dominion, but take care of it too.
I don’t think he added anything.
I’m out.

I was simply echoing the Holy Father’s own wording:
It is my hope that this Encyclical Letter, which is now added to the body of the Church’s social teaching, can help us to acknowledge the appeal, immensity and urgency of the challenge we face.
(emphasis added)
That we need to take immediate action NOW is, according to the Holy Father, now part of the social teaching of the Church. He didn’t add any new doctrine…previous Popes also preached the importance of caring for the environment…but he made it a “command”, so to speak, that we take action in the here and now to curb current abuses.

If you have time for all these posts, you probably have time to watch it.
Why not explain the theme? Is it about Jesus or not? Why hide the theme? I get the impression that Jesus isn’t mentioned, except possibly to disparage a certain group of Catholics.

Its about the importance of taking care of each other, which was also the theme of Jesus’ ministry, if you recall. Jesus comes up, as does Christianity. The transcript didn’t take much more time to read then it took me to post this summary.

An 18 minute video is significantly longer than four sentences.

I watched it though, and think it was good.

His comments were ostensibly aimed at using technological development to help each other, rather than just help ourselves, so I guess it was “T”.

Good enough for me!

Though usually the Pontiff’s unconventional talks are entertainment…😉
