I would have preferred that Archbishop Lyke be the first African-American cardinal, but he didn’t live long enough. I am quite sure he would have gotten it if he didn’t die so young.
Not a fan of Gregory, but I understand we need cardinals of color in USA and it’s long overdue for us to have one. May God bless him and help him to do a good job.

at this point…yes.
I am seeing a developing succession of what I perceive as politically tainted moves from the Vatican.
Recall that Bishop Gregory recently slammed President Trump.
…wondering what is next in the succession leading up to election.
President Trump and VP Pence are our most Pro-life duo…ever.

The Pope has no influence over the US Election and the mere fact that he put Gregory in that spot of being head of the DC Archdiocese indicated he was going to be made a Cardinal at some point. As the articles state, whoever is in charge of the Washington, DC archdiocese generally gets made a Cardinal. I’m pretty sure it was a done deal before Archbishop Gregory said anything about Trump going to the St. Pope JPII museum.

Since it has been historically the case, from the 4th archbishop of Philadelphia on, for the archbishop to be named a cardinal, wasn’t it just a tad surprising that archbishop Chaput—a Native American no less—was never named as such? As one Philly to another, I found that sent quite the signal. Mind you, I am not stating that it ‘came from the Pope himself’ but I am fairly certain that the current “Papal influencers’ have an interest in the US politics having a particular direction.

Darn shame that the Pope didn’t look past that as Chaput was Native American and that would have been a good opportunity to get another non-white Cardinal from USA.
I would really like to see both judges and cardinals made on their skills and merits, not politics, but I don’t get to make the rules.

Yeah, I don’t think he should get appointed. He’s wants to the church to reevaluate it’s teaching on homosexuality and I’ve heard he used Church funds to build a mansion for himself.

Archbishop Gregory was the obvious choice given Pope Francis’ past picks for Cardinals in the U.S. While I have no doubt that his recent condemnation of Trump only increased his favorability in Rome, he would have been made a Cardinal regardless. Archbishop Chaput was never going to be made a Cardinal by Pope Francis. He is the very antithesis of what Pope Francis looks for in a bishop/Cardinal. Same with Archbishop Gomez. You would think given Pope Francis’ emphasis on immigration that a Latino Cardinal would be a no-brainer, but Archbishop Gomez is far too orthodox/conservative in his theological outlook to be given a vote in a conclave and that’s what ultimately matters in today’s Church.
People have pointed out that Pope Francis likes to make bishops from more obscure or less historically important dioceses into Cardinals, but it really just has to do with the bishops’ outlook and philosophies. Bishops from important dioceses, such as Washington D.C., are still getting named Cardinals - it’s just after Pope Francis waits out the retirement of whatever Benedict XVI appointment was there and appoints his own man. In the meantime, he names the bishops he really wants in these positions as Cardinals, wherever they happen to be. Some of them end up getting moved to more important places once they become available. If Pope Francis is Pope for long enough it will go back to primarily the important dioceses getting the Cardinals regularly once the old guard has been cleared out.

That was supposed to be true of LA too… an archdiocese with an astounding 5 million souls. How many years has +Gomez been waiting? +Francis doesn’t necessarily follow the traditional conventions when it comes to Cardinals. He’s elevated bishops of obscure small dioceses too…

Soon-to-be beatified Fr. McGivney was a humble parish priest.
Archbishop Fulton Sheen was sent out to pasture in a backwater because he upset a Cardinal, who will never have a sainthood cause and who indeed might be in need of posthumous prayers.

Pope Francis promoted Bishop Wilton Gregory to cardinal. Gregory has often harshly criticized President Trump on several occasions. Bishop Gregory, who is black, is said to have prayed for George Floyd who died while in the custody of police. That is all well and good, but I hope the good bishop also prayed for the victims of Mr. Floyd’s crimes. In one instance Floyd committed armed robbery and placed a handgun against the abdomen of a woman who was reportedly pregnant. Floyd has a long rap sheet of theft and drug crimes. Floyd, who is 6’7”, fought with police while they were trying to arrest him for yet another crime.
One point that I rarely see being suggested by so called “black leaders” is to recommend that people STOP FIGHTING WITH THE POLICE. Let them do their job, and if you are falsely arrested you can later sue for false imprisonment. I guarantee there will be a long line of lawyers who will take those cases. Does anyone think Bishop Gregory will put fourth this recommendation?
