I don’t have political opinions about the creation of Cardinals. That is far, far outside my area of competency. I suspect the same is true for every single other poster in this thread.
But you do have opinions about the opinions of others relating to politics… which means they are political opinions.

I’m not sure what this means.

I think this thread is a poor reflection on Catholicism because too many posters are expressing opinions on the creation of a Cardinal when they have no particular competency to do that.

It would be like me giving my opinion on the future of cardiology. Sure I can write many pages about it, but it would be wasted time and space. No one should take anything I say about cardiology seriously.

Catholics should be especially cognizant when their opinions (political or not) bring them into opposition to the Pope. It’s best to reflect, and consider the probability that the Pope is correct. Silence is always an option.

This isn’t rocket science. If you are an adult with a brain you are competent enogh. Don’t sell yourself or the rest of us short.

I suspect you are being disengenuous.
That’s not very charitable.

I don’t believe I have ever publicly opposed any Pope’s selection of any Bishop or Cardinal. There are many of both I disagree with on a host of issues (appointed by every Pope of my lifetime), but at no point have I questioned the Pope’s selection.

The Pope’s competency to select members of the hierarchy is unique.

Not me. I think it is very clear from a myriad of current events that this Pope has made a series of leftist decisions and the Church may be in serious trouble. Believe your own eyes.

Bishop Gregory was not shy about stepping out of his purview to criticize President Trump and the police so I too have an opinion about him.

I agree, some of His views seem shaky, we can work and hope for the best.

I’ve noticed that liberals never seen to recognize other leftist. I don’t know if it’s because a fish doesn’t know it’s wet or they are being disengnuous. This is the most left pope i have ever seen and the appointment of Bishop Gregory is just one more example.
Tbh I actually really resent being labelled. I really have little patience for petty partisan politics or with those who dismiss others (or their viewpoints) simply on the basis of their (presumed) political leanings.

The biggest (and sadly, most accurate) criticism of Christians (and Catholics in particular) is that we’re hypocrites - we talk a good game about care for the marginalised and loving others, but fail to follow through in our actions. Certainly, some of the invective I’ve seen directed as bishops and the Pope especially shows this to be only too true.

The Church is neither on the left nor on the right but rather is called to preach the Gospel to all peoples - something that can only happen if we’re working to unite people rather than divide them through the application of labels. Those who would criticise Cardinal-elect Gregory’s creation as a Cardinal would no doubt have lauded the appointment of Cardinal Pell to the Secretariat of the Economy (indeed, the opposite is no doubt equally true). For what it’s worth however, Gregory was appointed a bishop by Pope John Paul II and an Archbishop by Pope Benedict XVI. What should matter isn’t an individual’s perceived political persuasion but rather their ability to serve the Church - both locally and universally - in it’s proclamation of the gospel.

Unfortunately I don’t see him living up to either of these requirements.
That’s calumny. You should not make baseless accusations against the clergy in a Catholic forum. Being critical of Donald Trump is not a sin and does not make Gregory “unholy”.

I said nothing about Trump. I couldn’t care less what he says about Trump.

I do care about building a lavish episcopal residence for himself and lending support to Fr James Martin.

The Church is neither on the left nor on the right
The church may not be but some members of the clergy have picked sides instead of preaching about the issues especially anti-Catholic policies that are intrinsic evils
Those who would criticise Cardinal-elect Gregory’s creation as a Cardinal
His financial dealings requires scrutiny and should disqualify him. Does the church need more scandal? Is there no one untainted for the position? It does appear agenda driven

Are you required to follow blindly?

You neglected to mention that he apologized for building that residence, made the decision to sell the residence after living there only 3 months, with proceeds going to the community. That sale completed in November of 2014.
and lending support to Fr James Martin.
More calumny, as Fr. James Martin is a priest in good standing with the Church in Rome, and you have no evidence that Bishop Gregory supports any specific heretical teaching. (By they way, eschewing hatred for the LGBT community is not a heresy.)

The Catholic church does not exist in a vacume. Bishop Gregory was not “proclaiming the gospel” when he made a show of criticizing the police and fueling the flames with claims of racism. There was no evidence of racism in the George Floyd death. Floyd was 6’7" and had fentinol in his system. The police had to arrest him because he was a suspect in a crime. Police do not want to fight, but when a subject resist they still have a job to do. Unfortunately one of the officers placed his knee on Floyd’s neck which is contrary to police training. Even though there was no evidence of racism Bishop Gregory jumped on the bandwagon and made the accusation.

I merely asked if the also prayed for the victims of Floyd’s crimes and the police. He did not mention them if he did.

Bishop Gregory is also under scrutiny for living in an expensive and large mansion.

So yes as a conservative i ask was Bishop Gregory chosen by the Pope for his leftist views or because he is qualified?

And this thread is not a good reflection of Catholicism.
That was my thought as well. It reads like a tabloid gossip rag. In light of hitting all the biggies (offenses against the truth, calumny, gossip, rash judgement), I think this is appropriate.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove that splinter from your eye,’ while the wooden beam is in your eye? 5 You hypocrite remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.

How so? All the actions of Bishop Gregory I have listed are true and documented.

Cardinal-elect Gregory was chosen as a cardinal basically because he’s Archbishop of Washington - it more or less comes with the territory (if you’ll pardon the pun) a position he was appointed to before George Floyd’s death. All Archbishops of Washington (other than the first) have been created cardinal.

So Gregory didn’t have a mansion built for $2 million?

For which he apologized .
What is your point?
