Pope Francis To Live In Guest House

Too many people seem to think that Pope Francis’ statements and actions are INDICTMENTS of Pope Benedict, Pope John Paul II, and others, and that by his ACTIONS he is saying that the actions of those Popes were unnecessarily luxurious, that they did not live APPROPRIATE Christian lives, etc. Of course this is not what Pope Francis is saying or implying, but by golly, listen to the MSN and some (not all) posters here, and that’s what they THINK he is saying!

Well people might want to educate themselves on the Society of Jesus that the Pope was apart of before he became a archbishop. This is absolutely no surprise to those of us who are around the Jesuit, and I bet it is no surprise tot he Cardinal who voted him in. Maybe this group of Cardinal, who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, knew more about what the Church needs than some who want to be concerned over such a small thing. People are going to read into it whatever they want to and some will insist on being negative.

I would not be at all surprized if we see a lot of changes and experimenting to try and reconcile things like security with the Pope’s Jesuit inclinations. The Holy Father really has three “jobs”. He is the spiritual leader of the Church; he is the organizational leader of the Church AND he head of state of Vatican City. So far, we have seen a lot that tells us how he will act in the first job but we have to be patient to see how he lays out his mission for the other two “jobs”. After Easter, I am sure he will be under some pressure to define what “business-as-usual” will look like for his pontificate.
From my understanding from the Jesuits I work with is that this Pope will not be pressured into doing things. I praise him for going out among the people risking his life for God and doing what he think is best.

Well, he did accept the “jobs” of Pope. 😉 I didn’t say the pressure was coming from others, just that he would start to feel pressured. He has to figure out for himself how to get the work done (and my understanding is that the General Congregations spelled that out fairly extensively). Even if the pressure is only from within himself, there will be pressure. The papacy is very demanding.

The residence where the Pope is staying should not be a security issue.
The security issue arises with the increased movement back and forth. It’s a more complicated to provide security for the Pope and those who are with him if he is going back and forth between the Vatican and Casa Santa Marta (possibly several times a day) than if he was in a single controlled environment most of the time. Not insurmountable but it is naive to say it is not an issue at all.

The head of security for the Swiss Guard said there was no problem - they are used to adjusting their work around the individual popes in their care. They are professionals and enjoy a break from the humdrum.

Remember that JPII snuck out of the Vatican to go skiing in the Alps? As I recall, there were Swiss Guards with him who managed to catch up and went skiing as well. Professionals like the Swiss Guard pride themselves on adapting to their work and not looking for an easy way out.

If the Swiss Guard don’t mind, and it makes the Pope more comfortable, why does anyone care?

I didn’t say it was “not an issue at all”. I am not totally verse in the layout of all the buildings but I would think that in most of the Vatican, the public is not just wandering around. If they could arrange for all the Cardinals to move between the Casa and the Vatican during the conclave without compromising their security or privacy, I would think the Vatican security people could do the same for one person. I also doubt that he would be moving between them frequently, perhaps just one time per day each way. Even if more than that, I trust they can handle it.

I hope it works. Francis could become an excellent role model for other bishops, gently, by example, giving notice to anyone who views a position in the hierarchy as one of status and perks, rather than of humility and service. Please God, send us more like him.

I am pretty sure this pope isn’t thrilled to have security for himself. He seems willing to risk his life to be among the people serving God his way. In my opinion, if there is anyone who should be willing to risk their life for God it should be the Pope. As to the other people, no one is forcing them to be there, they are free to leave and find other jobs. I am betting they are thrilled to have such contact with this new pope.

Actually you said:

Declarative, with no qualifications. 😛

Actually Cardinal Dolan talked about this on his radio show. They walked back and forth during the conclave. He said it was about a 20 minute walk, IIRC. 😃 They went back there for each of their meals, which I assume the Pope would be doing too unless they keep the kitchen and dining parts of the papal apartments in operation for him. It’s not so much that they need to keep him safe during his trips back and forth but that security would need to move to where every he is. That means either moving back and forth or keeping two sets of security staff - one in the Vatican and one at CSM.

I hope it works too, especially if it makes the Holy Father more comfortable.

So, are you saying that the Pope should not receive anyone in audience or on his staff or living in CSM with him unless they are willing to risk their safety too? I really don’t think Pope Francis would agree with you. He seems to be much more concerned with those around him than that.

Seriously, some people seem h**l bent on characterizing Pope Francis as a self-centered person who is going into every situation with a “my way or the highway” attitude. Yes, I am sure he wants to maintain his Jesuit simplicity and yes, he seems to want to change the status quo but I don’t think he is planning to trample others in the process.

I LOVE this man! What an incredible gift from God is Pope Francis 😃

God is truly generous.

What a great idea! Instead of living alone, he will be in a community of sorts, eating, praying and interacting with the other clerics who live there.
Most of the people who live at Santa Marthae are not clergy. They’re the Vatican staff: gardeners, cooks, secretaries and some priests in lower ranking positions.
As pope he may do as he pleases. My only concern is for the people who would usually care for a pope–what happens to them?
This is a charitable concern that has a very simple answer. First of all, the popes don’t have large staffs as the laity imagine. They have three or four house staff and two secretaries. That’s it.

Second, when a pope dies, in this case, abdicates, all of those posts automatically become vacant. The new pope can hire whomever he wishes. Popes always do so. There is always a turnover of staff. Bl. John Paul replaced the Italian cooks with Polish nuns who cooked and cleaned house. Pope Benedict replaced them with lay women from Communion and Liberation. Finding a post for three women is not a daunting task in a place as large as Vatican City. The secretaries are members of the clergy.
The papal apartments and all the art and beautiful surroundings of the Vatican are not any one person’s personal possessions, after all. They are held in trust as treasures for the human race.
Yes and no. The pope may use whatever is available in the Vatican warehouse to furnish his apartment or he can have it redecorated and furnished with new things as he wishes. Pope Benedict has his entire office moved to the papal apartment. Everything that was in the pope’s office was put in storage. Everything in that office is his property and left with him when he left. He also had the apartments redecorated in his favorite colors and fabrics. The furniture and art came from the Vatican warehouse.

Pope John Paul’s bedroom was his personal property. There was nothing in there that belonged to the Vatican. The rest of the apartment was a blend of his things and things from the Vatican warehouse. Pope Pius X had the apartment redone and everything was purchased new for him. He hired an interior decorator to do it. There was nothing in it that belonged to the Vatican. Though everything now belongs to the Vatican, because I believe he had no heirs as was the case with Bl. John Paul.
Interesting. I can see why he would be uncomfortable with the larger apartments because of his usual lifestyle. I have a feeling though that he may find it inconvenient to be moving back and forth after a short while. We will see. It’s not like anyone else will be living in the Papal apartments! 😛
There are numerous staff members that need to be in contact with the Pope throughout the day and evening.
Only one person is allowed contact with the pope, that is Archbishop Gior Ganswein. No other employee ever comes in contact with the pope during the day or the evening. The Archbishop is the filter through which everything goes, even the menu that the pope eats. There is usually a butler, but he does not interact with the pope other than to get around him to do chores.

Also, the pope will go to work at the papal office every day. The office is not moving to the guest house.
Nor do I think the Pope will start having defined “office hours” and only be available during those delineated times.
Popes always have defined office hours. Pope Benedict was only available four hours a day. The rest of his day was for study and writing. It was Msgr Ganswein’s job to program according to that schedule.

Pope John Paul was available 6 hours a day and that was it. The rest of the time he wrote and studied.
Pope Benedict’s “work day” was from 6am to late in the evening and that can be exhausting after a time.
That was only when traveling. While at home, he worked from 9 to 1 with the public. He took a three hour break until 4. Then he worked from 4 to 7 alone. That was the end of his day. In the evening he watched movies, saw the news, played the piano, prayed or simply read.
The Pope’s office, if I am not mistaken, is in the Papal apartments.
His office and library will remain in the same place and he will go back and forth every day.
So, they may repurpose the rest of the papal apartments or they might move the office somewhere else or he might have two offices - one near the Vatican business center and one at or near Casa Santa Marta. I am sure someone will find the decision media-worthy. 😉
Casa Santa Marta is closer to his office than he was in Buenos Aires. In Buenos Aires he had to take the bus and then hop onto the metro. At Casa Santa Marta he can walk to the papal palace, if it’s a nice day. If you’re on St. Peter’s Square looking at the Basilica, Santa Marta is to the left and the papal palace is to the right. You can cut across the square or if you want security and privacy, you can cut across the papal gardens behind the Basilica. There is also a four lane road that goes from one building to the other, right behind the gardens. He can ride over. It takes longer to get into the car than it does to drive over.

For those who have been to Vatican City, Casa Santa Marta is about 400 yards behind the Paul VI Auditorium. There is a private and secure walkway between the two buildings. Guests at Casa Santa Marta use the Square to get around. The clergy and staff use the secured walkways, roads and tunnels to get around. The pope is not outside of Vatican City, nor exposed to danger. It’s just a very informal setting.

I never implied he was self centered in any way, It is really too bad you CHOSE to read such things into it. It is uncharitable of you to take our own twist spin on what I said. If you read other post you would see I think he is awesome and cares about all people.

Thank Bro. JR for your clarifications and description of how everything is located. It sounds like a perfect situation for the Holy Father. Unless it is urban legend, the Pope did mention that the papal apartment was awful large for his tastes. And he gets comfort living among the workers and a more communal situation.

I’ve heard that not only did he take public transportation as a Cardinal, but his preference was to walk whenever it was feasible. It is probably why he is in such good shape for his age. I heard also that he only had a portion of his second lung removed, and that being a big walker all his life, the lung would have grown to meet the demand.

I was a bit confused about Pope-Emmy-Benedict – did his old office go into storage or did he have it moved (or planned to have it moved) to his new residence? Just curious. I wish we could get a close-up of he lovely Russian icon that Pope Francis “regifted” to him.

I never thought of this, but you may be right. The man did do a great deal of walking, which may explain why he seems so healthy.

It is true that only a part of his lung was removed. There was a medical doctor explaining how this is done and the aftereffects. He said that given that the surgery took place when the Holy Father was 20 and he’s now 76, it is unlikely that the lung will bother him at all. The man doesn’t even suffer from high blood pressure, which most people his age deal with. All that walking has paid off.

Pope Benedict brought his office from the Congregation for the Faith to the papal palace. Everything was set up identically as it was in the other building. The office that was there was put in storage.

When Pope Benedict moved out, his office was put in storage until the monastery is finished and everything that was there when Pope Benedict moved in was placed back where it belonged.

Now . . . when Pope Francis went to tour the papal apartment, he was very polite and looked around. He said to someone, “I don’t need this much room.” There is a little bit of the tour on this video. You can see the look on his face.

I feel badly for Archbishop Ganswein. He’s a lovely gentleman and the Prefect of the Papal Household. You can see in the video how excited he is to give the new pope the tour. It must have been a little sad for him when the pope announced that he would not be moving in for the time being. The Tour

I found this map

Oh thank you! I figured The Emmy-Holy Father would have his office moved to the monastery. So much more comfortable for him.

Now I just want a close-up of that icon - I love sacred art, especially icons. The little I could see in the vids and photos looked wonderful.

I appologize if you thought I was directing my comment at you. I probably should have put my two statements in different posts instead of just different paragraphs.

I too think he is awesome and cares about people, However in the last week, there has been a recurring theme here at CAF where many people seem to “know” that Pope Francis is going to fire staff, sack various curial members, close offices, and demand that things be done “his way”. The idea that someone who seems to be a very gentle soul is going to come and make abrupt and jarring change against the advise of those around him is an unfair characterization, in my opinion.

Again, I appologize if you got caught in the cross fire. 😦

When the monastery is ready, his belongings will be moved there.

Forgive me, but I’ve long been embarrassed by the grandeur of the Vatican, when our Saviour, God Incarnate, was born in a stable. I’m delighted by the choices of Pope Francis.
I do wonder if he has ideas and leeway to put the papal apartments to a charitable use.
I hope his strength of character and his obedience to the gospel Christ will enable him to do in the Church all that Christ would wish. I studied and became professed as a lay Franciscan and it left its mark on my outlook. I’m thrilled and hopeful regarding our new Pope.
God’s will be done.

If we’re thinking about the Vatican, there is nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed. Our Holy Father Francis was very supportive of the majesty of the Church as a temporal and spiritual institution. He understood her quite well.

If we observe his writings he refers to the popes as My Lord Pope. Lord was a title that was used for God and for nobility. He was quite comfortable with the pope being a nobleman. When we read of his special relationship with the popes, especially with Gregory IX who had been Cardinal Hugolino, the Cardinal Protector of the Order and one of the first Secular Franciscans, Francis never found anything to reproach.

Equally, our Holy Mother Clare had a very close relationship with Gregory and Alexander. She too professes great admiration, love and respect for them as they were, noblemen of great wealth and power.

Our Franciscan parents were very much a product of their times, yet they transcended their time, which is part of being a mystic. They saw the Church as a spiritual bride and as a temporal institution. They understood that as a temporal institution the Church has to protect the rights of the faithful. If she does not protect the rights of the faithful, their freedom to serve God according to his command and their freedom to proclaim the Gospel can and will be stripped away by secular forces. To offer this protection, she must stand as a powerful ally to the governments of the world and also as their conscience.

They also understood something else about the Church’s apparent wealth. That is that the Church’s wealth belongs to humanity. Had it not been for the popes and many bishops around the world, man’s genius would be corrupted or even lost. The Church has served as the warehouse for man’s creativity in the arts, music, drama, and architecture. But it does not stop there. She is also a warehouse for man’s greatest accomplishments in the sciences and literature. The Vatican itself is home to the world’s largest and wealthiest center for study of astronomy and evolution with satellite stations in the USA and other places, including the pontifical universities around the world.

Without this powerful presence in the world, many of the world’s poor wood be oppressed and many people of many faiths would not have freedom of religion. Outside of the Catholic Church there is no worldwide organization that protects the interests of the poor and freedom of religion for all, at least there is no authority that makes the world’s government’s squirm, even though they pretend that they don’t care.

As Franciscans, there is nothing for us to be ashamed of, unless it is we the faithful who take possession of the Church’s wealth and power and claim it for ourselves. Then we should be ashamed. But as long as we see it for what it is, for the protection of the poor and for the right of all people to worship God, then we support the Church’s power.

What we do not support is individuals who want to amass power or who want to tell the Church how to use her authority and her power. Francis taught us that we do not own the Church and we do not govern the papacy. This is what many Catholics seem to be trying to do without realizing it. By criticizing everything that the pope does or does not do, when there is no sin involved, they are acting as if they had a right and a voice over the successor of Peter. Francis of Assisi would knock some heads off, if he ran into such people. People need to read his admonitions and his letters.

Again, I appologize if you got caught in the cross fire. 😦

No worries. We definitely agree about this Pope.👍
