So lets assume for a minute that we sell off everything the Vatican has, and accumulate a few billion dollars to give to the poor. We could give each poor person, what, five or six dollars? And what then? You’ve given away everything, have nothing left, and now have no further way to help.
Helping the poor need not, and should not, mean putting the church itself into abject poverty, if for no other reason than this would make it much harder to help.
