Whoa, I wonder if he’s going to read the stuff that people have been tweeting to him…because it will make him run for the hills.

I personally feel that the Holy Father does not need to be on Twitter AT ALL. That is far too worldly of the Vicar of Christ. I get the while “meeting people where they are” - but there are plenty of other ways to do that in this digital age without jumping on the Twitter bandwagon. I am actually very disappointed about it, I don’t think it’s a good move at all.

I think its great, it keeps the Pope “active” or “relevant” with the people who need to see a good example of a Catholic the most.

I dont see it as the Pope getting indoctrinated into secular society. Hes too smart and he knows what hes doing.

Although after reading through what people are saying, I have to admit that it hurts me to read those. You can just FEEL the hatred oozing through those posts.
 
Can anyone explain to me what the word Pontifex means or stems from?

I wonder why the first tweet is scheduled for the 12th, is there a significance to that date?

I’m looking forward to the first tweet.

Pontifex is Latin for pope.
December 12th is the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I imagine our Pope Benedict is honoring Our Blessed Mother by offering his first tweet that day.

Our blessed Pope Benedict has spoken on Twitter but I dare not respond. I will only listen.
 
As of this morning, the Holy Father has 1,237,815 followers! Amazing! (You have to add up all of the languages that he tweets in to get the full number.)

As Beautiful said, December 12 is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She is Patroness of the New Evangelization, which is likely why the date was chosen for this evangelistic use of new media.
