Pope Benedict XVI saluted “the longstanding commitment of the American bishops to immigration reform” as he spoke on May 18 to the final group of bishops from the US completing their ad …

Another reason why I love the Holy Father. He keeps the moral compass of the Church straight whether related to abortion, same sex marriage, capital punishment, the environment, and immigration.

Benedict has been the right man at the right time. 🙂

One of the main causes of illegal immigration is the restrictive visa laws. Until these are relaxed so average people can get a visa, (not advocating open border policy), illegal immigration problem will not go away. Visa system needs to be fundamentally changed.

CAF response to Pope speaking on immigration. . . . .

I believe the forum rules and their application restrict anything even approaching or resembling disagreement or criticism of clergy or church leaders. I’m sure those rules are there for a reason, but it explains why many don’t comment on this thread.

So folks cherry pick Papal statements which the agree with to comment on? Wouldn’t it be more Catholic to give attention to any statement released by the Holy Father?

Maybe this is the “cafeteria” Catholicism decried so often around here. 🤷

I think it’s because people on CAF have gotten so anti-Obama and therefore react so defensively over anything remotely liberal. That’s just my observation. 🤷

Immigration reform is not liberal. There are lots of conservatives advocating immigration reform. But immigration reform does not mean amnesty to illegal immigrants.

Pope Benedict said previously:

At the same time, states have the right to regulate migration flows and to defend their own frontiers, always guaranteeing the respect due to the dignity of each and every human person.’

I suppose, given that liberals don’t want to do anything at all about immigration…

I also “laud” (applaud) the concept of immigration reform. Having studied the issue for quite awhile and dealing with it much more intimately than many do who have made proposals, I find that current proposals leave a lot to be desired when it comes to justice and charity and effectiveness. People are allowed to disagree with specifics of proposals, without violating social justice.

I favor more generous aspects in some regards, more restrictive (or more delineated) in other regards, for some practical reasons affecting the very economy and the very social services that in turn are designed to benefit immigrants.

There is not only one way to reform immigration law and immigration reality. I favor a different version of the Dream Act (for example) than the poorly thought-out one being proposed.

Etc.

It’s important not to stereotype and condemn those with constructive ideas.

Marco Rubio is reinventing the DREAM Act. It would give residency, they can go to university but not citizenship. Democrat Rep. Luis Gutiérrez said he would back it:

I’ll read the specifics later. (Mass now. :)) I don’t believe anyone so far has suggested a version of the Dream Act that I propose, and mine does lead to citizenship (eventually), but with national service (in a wide variety of forms) a contingency of that. (Something that the Left screams is “unfair.”) I maintain that citizenship without a national service requirement is amnesty by another name.
