this is the first I have heard that the Pope met with Kim Davis. I hope the story is true. what an honor!
I definitely believe it is true since His Holiness spoke out in favor of those who follow their conscientious objections.

According to the New York Times:
Ms. Davis and her husband, Joe, were sneaked into the Vatican Embassy by car on Thursday afternoon, according to Ms. Davis’s lawyer, Mathew D. Staver. The couple met for about 15 minutes with the pope, who was accompanied by security, aides and photographers. Mr. Staver said he expected to receive photographs of the meeting from the Vatican soon.

The whole thing about being “sneaked into the Vatican Embassy” sounds kind of cloak and dagger. I’m not sure I trust Kim Davis’ lawyer and won’t totally believe all this unless the photos are produced or it’s confirmed by the Vatican.

The story had been reported by Robert Moynihan of Inside the Vatican before Kim’s lawyers mentioned it.

Vatican officials did not respond to an email asking for comment early Wednesday.
Rowan County clerk Kim Davis and her husband met privately with Pope Francis last Thursday afternoon at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C., for less than 15 minutes, said her lawyer, Mat Staver . . .
As he (Pope Francis) left the country, he told reporters who inquired that he did not know Davis’s case in detail, but he defended conscientious objection as a human right.
“It is a right. And if a person does not allow others to be a conscientious objector, he denies a right,” Francis said.

It was Robert Moynihan of Inside the vatican that first broke the story, not Kim Davis’ lawyers.

Here is a video with an interview with Kim Davis’ attorney.

As I read it, Kim Davis herself was Moynihan’s source for his article. Additionally, Moynihan claims that unnamed “Vatican sources” confirmed that the meeting took place.

Considering all of the media outlets available, I wonder why Mrs Davis chose such a relatively obscure monthly magazine with a readership of 17,500 to break such significant news.

I think thats the same attorney who falsely claimed that 100,000 people held a prayer rally for her in Peru and was busted making the whole thing up and then lying about it afterwards. The man has no credibility, neither does Kim Davis, and I won’t believe it unless it comes straight from the Pope’s mouth.
I’m pretty sure it’s the same attorney who lied before, and I do not believe him about this, either. I’m with you, I think he’s lying. The fact that the Vatican will not comment on it says it is not true. Sure, there are things they will not comment on, but there is no reason they would not comment on this. I agree with you, the attorney has no credibility and neither does Kim Davis.

I will wait for the pictures, too. Pope Francis is certainly not averse to taking photos, God bless our Holy Father! 👍

ETA “ostensibly”.

I’d also like to know if Moynihan conducted his interview with Davis in person or over the phone or through emails, etc…

EmperorNapoleon. You said:

I don’t believe this story. I think its yet another fabrication on the part of the Liberty Council . . . .

As anthony022071 mentioned,

Inside The Vatican gives some of Robert Moynihan’s credentials including . . . .

About Robert Moynihan

Dr. Robert Moynihan is founder and editor-in-chief of Inside the Vatican magazine. He is an American journalist with a knowledge of five languages and a seasoned Vatican analyst. He earned his B.A. in English, magna cum laude from Harvard and a M.A and Ph.D. in Medieval Studies from Yale. . . .

What are you basing your incredulity on?

Is there any direct evidence this story is a fabrication? (I am not talking about a conspiracy theory somebody may have cooked up in his or her mind. I am wondering if you know something about this meeting that I do not know).

Moynihan’s credentials sound pretty good to me so far (but I am open to hearing what you have to say to discredit him).

God bless.

Cathoholic

Incidentally. Other news outlets are also beginning to report the story (in an alleged sense admittedly, but nobody is challenging it in any of these reports either)

CBS News is now reporting this story (here).

The NY Times is now reporting the story (here).

FoxNews is also now reporting the story (here).

ABC News is now also reporting the story (here).

Even NBC is reporting the story (here).

EmperorNapoleon. I’ll await your evidence, and proceed as indicated.

Very interesting. I might have to rethink my position as well. I felt that she should have just resigned, but if the Holy Father sees things differently, I need to reconsider.

I will wait for confirmation on this story, however. I will say that it would be exceedingly bold to make such a claim, unless it was true.

He spoke in English w/o an interpreter present?

Strange. His grasp of the English language is quite poor.

Even apart from the story, you should favor her decision, because it is unjust for the government to demand that its employees cooperate or comply with evil. And no one is morally obliged to quit their job out of respect for unjust laws. And Pope Francis has said that government workers have a human right to conscientious objection.

St. Thomas Aquinas :

“Human law is law only in virtue of its accordance with right reason: and thus it is manifest that it flows from the eternal law. And in so far as it deviates from right reason it is called an unjust law; in such case it is no law at all, but rather a species of violence.”

Robert Moynihan didn’t say that she called on him. He may have called on her, if he had heard from someone else that the pope met her.

How do you know the attorney lied?

I didn’t get that impression watching his 50 minute speech, albeit prepared, to the US Congress.

It’s possible the story is true. I can well imagine one of his staff introducing her to him as a generic “conscientious objector” without him fully understanding who it was he was meeting. The pope’s general, brief comments to her, the fact that he gave her rosaries and his later statement on the plane that he couldn’t speak about specific cases all seem odd if he had a truly informed opinion about Davis and her case.

True; more interesting questions.

For the time being, I’m going with the scenario that the “someone” who contacted Moynihan was from Davis’s camp and thought they were contacting The Vatican Insider and not Inside the Vatican.

Being that this guy is an attorney who would know the repercussions of making libelous statements do you really think he would lie? Also I read where the Pope called the mayor of Rome a “fake Catholic” for supporting gay marriage. My pastor said the media will find a reason to turn on Pope Francis, and this may well be it.

Was Dr. Moynihan also lying (see earlier post)? How about this from Gov. Huckabee?
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a 2016 GOP presidential candidate, told Breitbart News exclusively on Tuesday night that he hopes the media will learn from Pope Francis’ meeting with Rowan County, Kentucky, clerk Kim Davis that what she stands for is religious liberty against “judicial tyranny.”
Davis, the clerk who was jailed for refusing on a religious liberty basis to provide gay marriage licenses, was freed from jail recently thanks in large part to the efforts of Gov. Huckabee. During Pope Francis’ visit to the United States last week, he met in private at the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C., with Davis and her husband.
“While the media elites were slobbering all over themselves because Pope Francis commented on climate change, the Pope was having a quiet and powerful meeting with a humble Apostolic county clerk from Kentucky,” Huckabee told Breitbart News.
