Given that Archbishop Burke recently published a 50+ page analysis of the application of Canon 915 titled

The Discipline Regarding the Denial of Holy Communion to Those Obstinately Persevering in Manifest Grave Sin

I’m willing to believe it is significant that he was just appointed to the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts which acts as an adviser on matters of the interpretation of … canon law.

I’m thinking that the Pope’s decision to name Burke to these new posts were decided before he came to the USA last month.

The Pope has his reasons for naming Burke to Two Vatican Offices lets just support me.

Cheers.🙂

That’s probably true - which doesn’t make the appointment any less significant. We can only wait and see if the Vatican affirms Burke’s opinion on the application of canon 915.

Burke makes a strong case that a minister who provides communion to a person who meets all of the objective preconditions for denial of communion participates in scandal. If done so knowingly, this is a mortal sin for the minister.

And is this not also potentially the sin of adulation, in this case a mortal sin?

This is rarely the focus of these discussions. We have 9 EMHC’s at our Masses, and one priest. One can easily picture the EHMC who knows that that he should not give communion to the U.S. Senator (who meets all of the objective preconditions for denial) who is visiting for Mass, but the EHMC not been properly admonished by the priest and lacks the fortitude in the situation to wave this politician off. I recognize that some may say that this is the EMHC’s problem, but should the Bishops be more stringent so as not to place ministers in this situation?

The focus is so much on the political spectacle and rarely on the fact that more stringent enforcement is an act of charity. This would be charity not just for the potential communicant who would otherwise commit sacrilege, but for the unfortunate EMHC who, because of insufficient encouragement or instruction, would in weakness commit scandal and participate in mortal sin. Is it not unjust to place these ministers in ambiguous situations where mortal sin is real possibility?

IMHO, if the Vatican is really serious about cracking down on Pro-Abort Politicians not receiving communion then more will have to be done then another document.

Sanctions might be in order. As far as I am concerned its about time.
