There are at least two reasons why Pope Benedict may have decided peremptorily against a private meeting with Ms Rice.
First, it was Ms Rice who just before the outbreak of the Iraq war in March 2003 made it clear to a special papal envoy sent from Rome, Cardinal Pio Laghi, that the Bush administration was not interested in the views of the late Pope on the immorality of launching its planned military offensive.
Secondly, the US has responded in a manner considered unacceptable at the Vatican to the protection of the rights of Iraqi Christians under the new Iraqi constitution.

To mods: This could go under War on Terror, or Catholic News - whatever is best.

And why should we take the speculations of the biased, left-leaning BBC’s on this issue as anything other than an attempt to, once again, influence Americans to vote the way they think we should?

No thank you, I’ll pass.

I suspect a twisted analysis on the part of the BBC but I don’t particularily appreciate any secular governments point of view viz a viz the Church. So, I await a clearer picture of the situation.

What is true is that the US forces are not able to protect the Church. That is quite clear. Whether they ever will be is doubtful.

Come to the Benefit for the Iraqi Church October 21 at the Navity Church in Palos Park. Here’s the Website web.mac.com/johngibson/iWeb/Thattheyallbeone/Home.html

She’s a Catholic, right? Gosh I’d be seriously upset if I was her and the Pope refused a meeting! Says she’s in the wrong job and backing the wrong horse don’t you think?

She is Presbyterian and the Pope was on Vacation. What’s the problem? Even the Pope needs time for himself.

Pope Benedict XVI refused a recent request by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss the Middle East and Iraq, Vatican sources say.

…one leading Italian newspaper said it was an evident snub by the Vatican towards the Bush administration.

Is this the same “left leaning” BBC which has posted non-stop news stories about “radical” mosques despite the fact that afterwards these mosques turned out to have been falsely labeled yet got not even one apology from the BBC?
What can I say? I searched high and low on Fox and apparently they don’t see the Holy Father as a newsmaker.🤷
Fox has had bitter spite of the Holy Father ever since he spoke out against the Iraq war and spoken in defense of Palestinian civilians.

AFP picked up the story, which was not originally from the BBC but from an Italian newspaper. People should avoid ‘poisoning the well’ with regard to BBC - even if they are left leaning.

Condelisa Rice is a very wise politician.I think the Pope should be willing to be friends with her.

I know nothing about the story you cite, but from what I do know of the BBC they’re not right wingers in love with GWB. :coffeeread:

Because he refused to meet with her,it seems like he doesnt like her…Still,I suppose his reasons are good.
Did you read the article, The Pope had refused to meet with ANY diplomatic figures during August. He was on vacation, Vaction to him may mean deep meditation, he has that right not to meet with people if he so wishes.

Rice said she absolutely had to meet with him before her trip to Iraq! Sometimes people do not always get what they want. I fail to say how that translates in The Pope not liking her.

The Pope would not snub the Secretary of State of the United States without good reason.

It’s not personal. The article cited a major reason for the snub: Rice’s reported rejection of Pope John Paul’s diplomatic efforts to avert war in 2003. She is one of the architects of the invasion which has resulted in a wrecked country, hundreds of thousands of casualties, and an increasingly difficult situation for Christians in Iraq.

Why meet with a person who evidently has shown no remorse and has not tried to implement a solution acceptable to the Vatican? I say, good for the Holy Father.

Pope Benedict chose to do the wise thing in not meeting with Condoleezza Rice. If he would have done so it would be used as a propaganda snipet that The Vatican embraces a War that is costing so many lives and has scattered virtually all of the Iraqi Catholics out of their homeland.

Never can tell what devious use of many visual clips and still photos could be voiced over or captioned. It could imflame more people in the Middle East and could be used as a propaganda item.

The Pope is only interested in the Church and peace in the world.
