Did you read the article, The Pope had refused to meet with ANY diplomatic figures during August. He was on vacation, Vaction to him may mean deep meditation, he has that right not to meet with people if he so wishes.

Rice said she absolutely had to meet with him before her trip to Iraq! Sometimes people do not always get what they want. I fail to say how that translates in The Pope not liking her.
Yes,I did read the article.Thats why I said-I SUPPOSE HIS REASONS ARE GOOD.

Thank you for your response. it amazes me why this even a “Story”. The first response is from the vatican and the second is
from a newspaper. Why are we all jumping on the band wagon beleiving the newspaper over the vatican. The pope was gone during august, she wanted to meet in august so their schedules did not workout so the meeting didn’t happen. End of story.

The Pope refused a request for an audience during the August holidays.

Senior Vatican sources told the BBC the Pope does not normally receive politicians on his annual holiday at the Castelgandolfo residence near Rome.
But one leading Italian newspaper said it was an evident snub by the Vatican towards the Bush administration.

Exactly, it is a Non Story! Although obvious they have Media Spin in Italy also!😃

And why should we take the speculations of the biased, left-leaning BBC’s on this issue as anything other than an attempt to, once again, influence Americans
For one thing, Americans are only a minority audience for the BBC.

Ms. Rice is pro-abortion but I don’t believe that her stance on this issue has anything to do with her not being able to meet with the Pope.

Even though I believe she has done a good job as Secretary of State I am kind of glad he was on vacation.

Whether the Holy Father “refused” to meet with Condoleezza or coincidentally “out of town” it is a GOOD thing.

This way photos and videos cannot be used as a propaganda tool by either side of this War.

These are my thoughts as well. I think it’s hilarious that people would take the reasons cited by the newspaper and attribute them to the Pope. It is conjecture. This “story” should have been on an editorial page. The Vatican stated the reason clearly. To attribute other reasons for the non-meeting is opinion.

Sure. It’s just a “scheduling conflict”.

Why would you assume otherwise? The Pope recently met with President Bush (June, I think). And, according to the AFP article, the vatican “rejected all meetings with political representatives during August.”

To attribute motives to the Pope which have no evidence is uncharitable. Perhaps, you know him better.

Like I said, a “scheduling conflict”. This is always polite diplomatese for a snub, and if you think otherwise, you’re kidding yourself.

The Pope is a well-schooled diplomat. If this were a real “vacation conflict”, Rice would almost certainly have been aware of that and it would not have made the papers.

But there is evidence. It was cited in the story.

Really? There is evidence of what the Pope really thought? I would like to see such evidence. Was it from a psychic? Did someone inside the Vatican state what the Pope really thought?

Again…uncharitable.

Yes. The article cited Vatican sources. And, BTW, it’s NOT uncharitable to point that out.

Please quote the citation. I reread all three, and I don’t see any. Perhaps you misread the articles.

It IS uncharitable to to point out something that doesn’t exist and then say that the Pope is snubbing Sec. Rice, as opposed to just not meeting with any political diplomats while he is on vacation. I see opinion stated by the journalists, but no citations.

From the lead paragraph…

*Pope Benedict XVI refused a recent request by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to discuss the Middle East and Iraq, Vatican sources say. *

You may choose not to believe this if you wish, that’s your prerogative.

But it’s no basis for claiming that I am somehow being uncharitable because I do choose to believe it.

He refused a meeting with Rice…apparently because he is on vacation.

Believing that he refused it is not in question. Attributing a reason other than his vacation for that refusal without any evidence to back it up is the basis for what I consider to be an uncharitable act.

Why should we care about whether the Pope was willing to meet with Rice? Why should meeting with her be high on his agenda, doesn’t he have more important things to do? I ask these as honest questions, because I am not sure what the big deal is about.
