Pope says condoms sometimes permissible to stop AIDS

The Church teaches that Birth Control is an intrinsic evil, such as abortion and masterbation. That means there is NEVER a reason by which it would be justified. There can be justification for murder and war, such as in self defense or in the case of the “Just War”. I repeat BC can NEVER be justified for ANY reason.
In the case of male homosexual prostitutes, which is what the pope appears to have been talking about (the Italian version is said to have been a mistranslation), the condom is not being used as “birth control.”

How could it be? What sort of births would they be controlling?

Thank you for bringing this up again. You are correct. I was on a thread once and other posters were telling me about rape victims who are not pregnant being allowed to take certain medications which would prevent a pregnancy from occurring.

I fought it. I didn’t believe it and I kept saying “No. The Church would never teach that.”

Finally someone provided Church teaching and I discovered (to my surprise) that I was wrong. Then I conceded.

I’ll try to find the link but the thread I was in is now a fairly old one. I appreciated being shown Church teaching. Sometimes even if something appears to be wrong on the surface it can still be right.

I assume you are talking about emergency contraception … but that is always an abortifacient, no?

I read the OP and some comments and this verse came to my mind.
" strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel". Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not attacking your church or your Pope…It’s like throwing a cup of water on a bonfire…
Wonder how the church at Corinth would have dealt with this whole issue…Sometimes things are better left unsaid…

Wow, this is a problem. We are starting to go for each other’s throat. Everyone needs to take a step back, take a deep breath, and be “stouthearted and wait for the Lord.” Ps. 27

Remember that The Church with the Seat of Peter at Her head is The Rock, and Hell will not prevail against her. This is an attack. The Enemy and his minions never sleep.

“Indeed in nothing is the power of the Dark Lord more clearly shown than in the estrangement that divides all those who still oppose him.”
— J.R.R. Tolkien (The Fellowship of the Ring)

Join me now in praying for the Pope’s protection.
August Queen of Heaven, sovereign Mistress of the Angels, who didst receive from the beginning the mission and the power to crush the serpent’s head, we beseech thee to send thy holy angels, that under thy command and by thy power, they may pursue the evil spirits, encounter them on every side, resist their bold attacks, and drive them hence into the abyss of woe.

Most holy Mother, send thy angels to defend us and to drive the cruel enemy from us.

All ye holy angels and archangel, help and defend us. Amen.

O good and tender Mother! Thou shalt ever be our Love and our Hope.

Holy Angels and Archangels, keep and defend us. Amen

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.+

Condoms are not justified period. As the head of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church he should have said that anything other than heterosexual between a married couple is evil. Using condoms does not make the act of prostitution, male or female less evil. Black is black adding a condom does not make it any shade of white. The Catholic Church does not believe in gray morality.
Actually, the Church’s moral theology has always allowed for nuance and grappled with difficult situations where there is no easy moral answer. If the Catholic Church saw all morality as black and white, there would be no need for moral theologians to spend their life studying moral theology in detail (and still disagreeing with each other on the finer points).

It may be more comforting to think that the Church sees everything as being black and white, like a perpetual Sunday school, but the reality is that the Church has always walked a fine line trying to be both realistic and uncompromising on God’s Truth at the same time.

No matter how many times we go through this, millions now feel that the Pope has opened the door to condom use. Prior to this announcement everyone felt that the Church had an absolute position regarding condoms, now that perception has changed no matter what was intended.

That is why a clarification/retraction is called for and NOW!
I totally agree with the last statement which is prophetic. NOONE else but the Pope himself needs to clarify his statement and yesterday is not too early to correct it. His condom use statement for male prostitutes, if misperceived, has far reaching implications for everyone. It already has done untold damage to our Catholic Church and as such will be very difficult to clarify/refute. A speedy statement from the Pope would help with damage control depending on what was clarified/refuted. Only the Pope can say what he really meant.

I was among those horrified, confused and shocked that the Pope would say such a thing and refused to believe my ears until I checked its accuracy. Like Irishpatrick said, perceptions have “changed no matter what was intended” and in spite of the clarifications in the CWR “Light of the World”. If the Pope doesn’t want his words misrepresented, he needs explain them clearly and unhesitatingly in no uncertain terms and not beat around the bush. And NOW!

Yes, I’ll agree that the media responsible for twisting and misinterpreting what the Pope actually said should have left their words ‘unsaid’.

God bless Benedict XVI and keep him strong. The ‘world’ hates him and will do anything it can to try to hurt him. . .just as ‘the world’ hates his master, Jesus Christ, the King of Glory.

If y’all are real Christians, are you going to let some anonymous hacks at the local ‘newsplex’ twist a man’s words and then claim that the twisting has 'destroyed your faith as Christians"? If so, you didn’t have faith in Christ to begin with.

If y’all are real Christians, are you going to leap to the conclusion that ‘the media’ somehow is infallibly correct and snarl and leap like attacking dogs to call the Pope "weak willed’, "ignorant’, "foolish’, and to come out with guns blazing calling for him to ‘recant’ when you haven’t even shown that he did anything wrong in the FIRST PLACE? What kind of Christian behavior is THAT?

**Certainly not every poster has been guilty of such faulty logic or bad conclusions. . .but it is disheartening to see even one person who’s let himself or herself be gulled by Satan. **

Why is the Pope so concerned with homosexual sex. It is deffinitely a disordered lifestyle. What I am concerned with is this;why is it ok for homos to engage in this activity with the Pope’s ok to use condoms. Yet if a married man receives a transfusion and has been discovered through no fault of his own to have the HIV virus, he cannot protect his wife with use of a condom. Get my drift! Isn’t her life in danger and what if she does get pregnant, without the condom, what about the poor child. The Pope really missed the mark on this one. It can also be said that many priest in the past several years have died from the Aids virus. Could this scandal coming out be another reason for this departure from what has always been a no no. Thanks, just thinking.

I think the Pope is concentrating on Homosexual acts because it would be the only case where condoms can’t be used as contraceptives. Therefore the use of condoms itself in that case would not be an extra sin (ontop of the homosexual act.)

This does not mean condoms can be used to prevent AIDS in Africa. Really condoms should NEVER be used becuase in the only case where it wouldn’t be a sin (homosexual acts) its already a sin because of the homosexual acts. But if a homosexual prostitute was to go to confession to confess his homosexual acts, he wouldn’t need to confess the use of a condom. That is basically what I’m getting from the Pope’s statement.

Should he have said that? I don’t know. I think he should have expressed this in a better way for sure. I personally did not like the words he used.

And some would argue that he shouldn’t make this comment at all and that he should just have continued to talk about abstinance. However this information might come in handy if there was a homosexual prostitute who wanted to confess his sins (or other circumstances.) 🤷

No, it’s actually not.

I think it’s called Plan B here in the states and it’s not an abortifacient. I’m not really sure what it does though.

Some forms are, others are not. USCCB hospital guidelines require a pregnancy test be given to eliminate the possibility of an abortificent action.

I don’t think he’s “concerned” about it, but rather was answering a question with what he thought was the easiest example.

For starters, no one has said homosexuality is ok to engage in. So let’s get that clear. Secondly, the Pope said nothing about the issue of a man and wife so perhaps let’s wait for an answer on that senario before we judge it.
The Pope really missed the mark on this one.
I doubt it. The Pope has helped engage the world in a conversation about human sexuality and morality. I think that’s pretty significant…

And in terms, and within premises, that will not leave both the Catholic laity and broader world as or more confused.

Keep it simple, Your Holiness.

Exactly! This ambiguity is what is so disconcerting. This tiny little point about the use of condoms by male prostitutes engaging in homosexual acts is now responsible for headlines like “Pope approves use of condoms.”

I know what the Pope meant, but his statement was ambiguous and confusing. Public figures have to see the consequences of their statements, and he apparently did not look ahead enough.

No. Condoms DO prevent HIV/AIDS. If they didn’t then we would have the same amount of gay men having AIDS that we did 25 yrs ago. 😦 HIV/AIDS dramatically dropped in the gay population because of condoms being used.
**
No one really stopped having sex**. The only thing that has helped with HIV transmission is condoms.
This is not true. Many gay males did alter their sexual practices during the early AIDS crisis, once it was determined that they were spreading the virus through exchange of bodily fluids. Many were frightened of dying themselves or of causing someone they loved to go through that hell. You are wrong about this.

Whether it’s rude or not, the bigger point is that your claim that the discussion reflects a lack of critical thinking does not hold. Rather, the Pope’s thinking would have been better understood in a critically logical and more explicit sequence, in which he reaffirmed that compounding one evil with another merely compounds the immorality. That’s not what came out of his mouth, unfortunately.
Well that isn’t really the problem either. The problem is, in part, thinking that the man has to be crystal clear in every single thing that comes out of his mouth, rather then taking into consideration what he says in light of everything else he’s said and done in the past.

You are right though, when this story first broke the comments were completely ripped from their context. In fact, when I read the story, before it popped up on this forum, they published one sentence in this sequence of questions/answers surrounded by about a page and a half of commentary about how the pope had joined the 21st century. They did making it sound like he was condoning the use of condoms.

But frankly, the pope has made himself crystal clear in the past, and sure enough, a few hours later we got the whole story.
Any public figure, including a Pope, has to be careful that his remarks not be misconstrued. He’s only human; it’s inevitable that from time to time, that even well-developed argument within clear definitions will be misconstrued (accidentally or deliberately), but in this case many of the steps were merely omitted, which is unfortunate.
You’re right to a point. But he’s the head of the Catholic Church. Not some political public figure. He shouldn’t have to use PC (politically correct) words which only serve to confuse, distort and generalize. I read his comments as very clear and very precise. The problem is not what he said, but that the media is so incredibly ignorant of anything and everything Catholic that they, as usual, were barking up the wrong tree. If they had exercised good judgment and sound journalism they would have gone to a respected Catholic theologian or apologist and ask the question, “Hey, what does the pope mean when he says this?”

Does that mean he shouldn’t have said anything at all? I don’t think so. Whatever happened to teachable moments? … If you read the stories that have been posted today, you’ll see they’ve already started back off that initial, “Oh my gosh the pope said condom use is ok in some situations!”.
I don’t think it’ a matter of whether particular people on CAF get it. Many of us do. It’s a question of the public audience, and even the broad Catholic audience.
Actually I was addressing only the people on CAF and said nothing of the public audience or the broader Catholic audience on purpose. CAF people tend to be on the ball, but there are some people in this particular thread who have ignored and dismissed very sound and logical explanations without any indication that they’re trying to work out what has been said to them. No follow up questions. No attempt to get clarification. Nothing. Just saying how wrong the pope is over and over again.

So what are the people who do understand to do? Just tell them to take a deep breath and go over it slower, line by line… which is what most have been trying to do. 😉

Oh yes it is an abortifacient! Here is their own statement from the website.

Plan B One-Step™ is a backup plan that helps prevent pregnancy after birth control failure. The sooner you take emergency contraception, the better it works. Plan B One-Step™ is just one pill, so you get what you need right away. Other emergency contraception requires two pills, 12 hours apart.

If the condom broke and you think you might be pregnant - or might become pregnant, this pill must stop the egg from implanting in the uterus. Fertilized egg = baby. Fertilized egg not able to implant = abortion.

Catholicism is a deeply thoughtful religion, among many other things. There’s no need to dumb it down. Maybe this is a good time to pick up a book and better understand the Catholic faith and how the faith is communicated to the faithful?

People really are much smarter then they think they are… it just takes a little extra work sometimes.

I’m not talking about PC language, and clearly you’ve missed my own reasoning about this. I disagree with most of your response, frankly. He’s public; doesn’t matter that he’s a religious figure. He speaks to secular audiences as well, and even when he issues religious documents, the press will notice and pick up on it.

If he were clear in his definitions, terms, and logical flow, no one would “confuse, distort, and generalize” because the proper context would be there. He didn’t clarify the context, or the reason for the exception (the most important part of his pronoucement).

I’m not sure why you’re talking down to me (since I mentioned earlier that I’m trained in moral theology), but I’m not particularly appreciative of it. I have a library of “good books.” I don’t need clarification because I get the reason for his statement, and continue to maintain that the context was extremely poor (male homosexual prostitution) and, when not explained, prone to distortion and confusion by their nature.

The very basic (not elevated) catechesis of Catholics is in extremely poor shape. It has not been substantially improved since the decline of catechesis in the 1970’s. And it will not be substantially improved until two things occur: (1) appointment of RCIA and CCD directors who are vetted for their own proper and thorough understanding of the faith, including but not limited to moral theology, and (2) oversight of religious education, in CCD, in RCIA, and in Catholic schools.

If people on CAF question, or are ignorant about, some of the most basic sacramental theology, scriptural, systematic, and moral theology, and not willing to “open a good book,” what makes you think that an outsider – someone less acquainted with the faith – will take the time to analyze Catholic moral frameworks in order to sort through the Pope’s statement?

No, the Pope would do well to take the initiative. He would do well to do this now.
