Would you mind quoting the scripture where Jesus said to listen to the Pharisees?
Are you not familiar with Matt 23:1-4?

1 “Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 Saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. 3 All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not.”

That’s nice an all… but book, chapter, and verse please where Jesus said to listen to the Pharisees?

LOL, I guess you weren’t familiar with it. 😛

Yet he did not come out and retract previous teachings that you can be saved by other religions, which is a good thing.

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Does this verse not specify only one church? One body of Christ?

If there is only one church, how many other churches could claim to be the one true church?

Did you get into the coffee again? 😛

“Peter” is a metaphor for all of humanity, not one person is how some interpretations go. Or you could interpret it as there is a rock inside of all of us to build the church inside ourselves to go out into the world.

Does anyone have a link to the actual document? The AP News story was pretty harsh.

Can you elaborate? I am not understanding you.
Vatican II brought about the teachings that there are other churches with similar histories that you can also receive salvation through (e.g. Lutheran, Epispoical, Methodist, and a couple others…). That was based on a similarity of history and teachings. By just stating the RCC is the “only true church”, while he focuses back on the RCC, he does not overturn that Vatican II teaching. The RCC still recognizes salvation by some outside the church.

Or I could adhere to the straightforward accounts in the bible too.

You really must back up your statements.

The Church still teaches that there is no salvation outside the Church. If a Hindu, Jew, or Atheist is saved it is through the Church in one form or another, even if it is not outwardly perceivable. For there is One Head, Jesus Christ, to which belongs One Body, His Church. Without Jesus Christ there is no salvation; Christ and the Church are one.

Anyone saved is saved through the Catholic Church.

I thought that too, but it is a link to an article about it.

Or else I’m being really daft, in which case I apologise!
You are correct- not daft. I am going to see if its on the Holy See site yet.😉

You are wrong in this one. Most of the friends I had growing up (here in the US) are Protestant, and I am married to a non-Catholic as well. That is why I said I was not going to mention any denominations, and I’m not going to name them.
As I said, I have been wrong in the past. Your experience is different than mine…I’m assuming because you’re Catholic…without a Catholic involved in the discussion…it rarely comes up or is even on our “radar screen”, but it probably has to do with the Protestants involved as well as a Catholic “influence” thrown into the mix…but then…I could be wrong…I have been in the past:)
